Beschreibung

Upon accepting an early retirement offer I moved to Madrid. I have now lived in Spain for almost four years. Most recently I have moved to the northern Spanish city, Oviedo. I really like the combination of easy access to mountains, including the Picos de Europa and the Atlantic coast.

While living in Madrid I volunteered for Jose Andres’ World Central Kitchen. We served breakfast and lunch to Ukrainian immigrants at the immigration center. It was hard work, but very rewarding knowing we were helping people who were in great need. I especially enjoyed getting to know some of the families that I would see regularly during my shifts.

The World Central Kitchen program has been shut down and now I am seeking other opportunities to volunteer. I discovered Work Away recently, while walking the Camino de Santiago. A fellow pilgrim described her interest in Work Away. I like to be busy, doing, helping, contributing to a greater good and when I looked at the various opportunities on the platform, I felt that some of those could be mutually beneficial to me and the host.

I look forward to continuing to explore the platform and the possibilities it affords, to meeting fellow Workawayers and especially meeting hosts to see how my skills and interests can help satisfy the host's needs.

As I live in Spain, I am interested to become fluent in Spanish. I am currently at an early intermediate level and need to spend more time listening and speaking the language. I have had some experience assisting native Spanish speakers along their journey to learning to speak English and am happy to offer my assistance going forward.

Was könntest du arbeiten?

Cooking: Though not a trained chef, I am a good and inventive cook. I love finding creative ways to use those ingredients I find available to make a delicious and nutritious meal.

Handy: I was raised on a small farm and have done every possible chore associated with farm life. Planting, weeding and harvesting a garden. Setting fence posts and installing fencing, I'm not afraid of, and actually enjoy the "doing" of things. Given a little instruction, I am capable to do what needs done.

Was noch ...

I am a life-long runner and primarily an endurance trail-runner. I love to hike and backpack. While living in Spain I have completed three routes of the Camino de Santiago. I have immensely enjoyed meeting pilgrims, hearing their journeys and the shared experience we all go through when doing something challenging.
