Nice to meet you, I'm Devan!
I'm a young farmer who looking to gain experience and skills in permaculture, natural building, intentional community affairs, and pretty much anything else someone would be willing to teach me :) I just finished a 6 month program as an organic vegetable farm apprentice in Blachly, Oregon, and my time there has made me realize that I want to devote my life to farming and to helping build structures, both physical and social, that benefit both our planet and our communities. I love being outside in nature, doing creative projects, reading, writing, and having thoughtful conversations with interesting people. I'm easy going and love to crack jokes, but I'm also a very hard worker who pays attention to detail and works efficiently. I get along really well with others and enjoy spending time in good company. I'd love to hear your stories and about any cool interests you might be willing to pass down knowledge about and I like to hear different perspectives and opinions. I'm really curious about what each workaway experience might offer and I'm excited for the opportunity to learn and grow along the way.

Was könntest du arbeiten?

I've so far participated in two different farming programs, first one was on an organic livestock farm and I worked there for two months before moving on to my second program which was a 6 month vegetable farm apprenticeship.

During my time on these farms, I've gained many skills including:
- Safely working with large animals
- Herding and leading cattle and sheep
- Milking cows both by hand and by machine
- Cleaning milking equipment and using proper sanitary technique
- Harvesting and washing eggs
- Sowing seeds and transplanting into garden beds
- Hand-tilling garden beds
- Bed prep and application of soil amendments
- Harvesting of a variety of vegetables including hand-cutting salad mix
- Management of a cultivation schedule (weeding) and proper technique depending on the type of cultivation/weeding required

My other skills and abilities include:
- Being able to follow directions and ask clarifying questions whenever needed
- Attention to detail
- Working well with others both as a leader and as a follower
- Working well on my own
- Being a good problem solver and thinking well on my feet
- Being flexible and adaptable
- Ability to work quickly without cutting corners
- Strength/ability to engage in rigorous work such as lifting heavy equipment
- Maintaining a good attitude and being open to a challenge

Was noch ...

I have a ton of hobbies, most of which involve creative work, I love to draw, read, write, do origami & paper crafts, and I'm alright at sewing and crochet. I also enjoy playing video games from time to time and like to do puzzles. Yoga and daily walks are apart of my routine as well, and I think it would be cool to do some of these activities with others if anyone would be interested in joining in :)

I also really love to learn and I spend a lot of time reading about permaculture, farming, earthen building, and other eco-friendly design practices. I feel that I have a lot of book knowledge about these subjects, but lack practical experience with them and am hoping to be able to fill in the gaps as I visit various farms and homesteads. I'm also really curious about a wide array of subjects and am always looking to gain new skills.

I think the only other thing to know is that, while I am pretty social, I do need need a quiet space to decompress, and I like to have a good amount of alone time. I'm very good about communicating my needs and will let you know if my social battery has been exhausted.
