Hi! I'm Yurun from China. I spent 7 years studying in Canada, where I majored in Materials Engineering. However, my passion for the outdoors has inspired me to switch my future career to conversations, specifically in forestry. So, here I am looking for opportunities to bridge this gap and enrich my experience. I love the nature. I love plants and animals. I love interacting with interesting people and learning about their stories and cultures.

This year I graduated from the Materials Engineering program at McMaster University in Canada. My background in engineering has given me a solid understanding of technology and physical systems, which helps me grasp new concepts quickly. In case you’re interested, I specialized in electronic materials. My final year team project was on processing a polymetric light diffuser, and my personal research project was on light trapping in solar cells.

I am also an avid love for the outdoors. In my free time, I enjoy doing outdoor activities, such as hiking, mountain biking, skiing, kayaking, and horse riding. I have recently taken up rock climbing, which is really fun and adventurous! I’ve be exploring ways to integrate my passion for the outdoors into a career or perhaps a seasonal part-time job.

While in Canada, I volunteered at a local barn for six months, where I helped in preparing and caring for horses between lessons and barn maintenance. Last winter, I assisted ski instructors in teaching as a snow school apprentice. After finishing my undergrad, I returned to China and volunteered at the World Wilderness Horseback Archery Championship this June, aiding in organizing and executing the competition. This summer, I worked as a camp counselor in the Tengger Desert, where I instructed students in ATV riding and oversaw their daily activities. These roles have developed my ability to work in outdoor environments and reinforced my interest in working in nature.

In my final year of undergrad, my growing passion for the outdoors led me to discover that Forestry could be a more fulfilling career path for me, the one that aligns with my desire to protect the environment directly. Recently, I’ve started taking biology courses. These courses are fascinating and have made everyday biology concepts clearer. To bridge the gap between my engineering background and the forestry program I wan to pursuit in grad school, I want to get started in the conservation field first. I hope this will allow to me to gain hands-on experience, including forest and animal survey skills, and apply my biology knowledge to real life problems. Moreover, I hope to learn more about sustainable forest management through the experiences.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Join a rainforest protection ...)

The feedback from other volunteers has already proven how great the basecamp is and what an amazing experience it offers. I want to share my experience from a different perspective. I joined this Workaway with the main goal of acquiring conservation or reforestation-related knowledge and experience, as I have been interested in shifting my… read more academic focus to forestry. Jay is in charge of this Project. He can explain both the reasons behind the project and the methods used. He also has a good understanding of the local tree species (I heard that he grew up in that area). Additionally, he works as an environmental consultant, so he possesses knowledge of conservation situation and issues at the national level. I asked him many questions; and sometimes it might be overwhelming, but he always tried his best to give me informative answers.
The workers are well-versed in the local flora and fauna. Janith, who studies wildlife conservation with a specialization in amphibians and reptiles, enjoys strolling through the woods to look for critters. He was more than willing to show us the wildlife around the basecamp. He also practices ethical spotting and handling of animals. Also, these guys are all experts at climbing trees, which is truly impressive. Methma, who studied environmental management, helped me identified a bunch of plants. Ruwini taught me a lot about cooking, culture, and daily chores. I also bombarded them with too many questions, but they didn’t shy away. They tried to answer them to the best of their knowledge. In the end, we all shared a good laugh about my relentless and almost annoying curiosity (Oh man, I really miss that).
Overall, they all demonstrated great environmental stewardship and respect for nature. They are committed to make the basecamp environmentally friendly and being responsible for the natural surroundings. Upon finishing my volunteering there, as a beginner in forestry, I had gained tremendous knowledge about reforestation and local species. Moreover, this experience solidified my passion for forest conservation.
By the way, I am pretty fascinated by the way of life in that village. Locals are super friendly. Life there was slow but vibrant, and sometimes adventurous. We get our food mainly from farmers’ market, and everything was fresh. They cooked over open fire using traditional tools. We ate simple but health. We went to the nearest town only once a week to get personal supplies (but you can go as many times as you want, and there are supermarkets within walking distance). It really reduced my desire to consume. The amenities at the base camp were basic but sufficient. Honestly, that bettered the overall living experience. This experience led to a positive shift in my expectations for living conditions, making me more adaptable. I wish I had spent less time on my phone (especially on social media because I was also doing some online research for learning) and more time with friends and nature there. At the end of my stint, I felt a deep sense of transformation; I knew the place and the people had undoubtedly made me a better person.
