Beschreibung
Simon is Welsh and Jess is British/Canadian via California. We love finding projects where we can lend our helping hands and energy. We are exploring the areas around the Canadian railroad, excited to experience the beautiful countryside over this summer season. We prefer 1 month projects.

Our last project was minding a small animal sanctuary while the owner was away. We cared for 9 yak, 8 pigs, 1 goat, 1 rabbit, 2 dogs, 2 cats, 1 mini horse and 1 mini donkey. Our animal friends included many geriatric and ill members. We loved spending time and becoming friends with each of them.

We lived in an intentional community in Dorset, England for most of 2025. We had a large permaculture vegetable garden and reed bed filtration system over 3 ponds that filter the properties waste back into the wild environment. We helped the community by cooking vegetarian meals for up to 50 people, cleaning, weeding, planting, decorating and by recruiting like minded volunteers to join us. We are omnivores.

Jess is a freelance designer & Artist working to design and build affordable housing in California and Hawaii. (I draw, paint and write and have a degree in art as well as one in design. Most recently I finished a 200 unit 25 acre property in Lahaina Maui in fall 2025.) We will travel through summer 2026 before settling in Hawaii. Simon is an odd jobs fanatic, so please give him your list of to-dos! His skills are - 30yrs in construction, 8 yrs in animal care, great cook/community member and all round fun/helpful man.

We travel with my 2 older well behaved indoor cats who are happy to stay with us in a private room. They adored the animal sanctuary and fit in well with all members and limitations.

We are accustomed to living as polite and helpful community members. Jess is skilled in animal care, gardening, cooking, foraging, cleaning, canning, art, design, computers. Simon has 30yrs experience in construction and 8 years in animal sanctuary maintenance.

Jess & Simon were the perfect fit for us. They were both wonderful . Hard working , brought great ideas and creativity to our projects and were fun to spend time with . Everyone on the team loved them .

When they stayed here at our animal sanctuary for two months they were traveling with their well behaved , clean adorable cats Cali & Lucas .… read more The cats were lovely to have around and perfect house guests .

The tasks here at the sanctuary are varied , and some of the duties are a bit much for some of the volunteers who have spent time here , however Jess and Simon handled everything asked of them and more . They were comfortable and excelled at all animal care duties . In addition, they helped train new volunteers, gave animal
Sanctuary tours and helped re do some of the instruction manuals to improve our training process.

Simon was also very skilled with a lot of the maintenance projects and didn't need any direction. He made multiple improvements to the animal habitats and was a tremendous value to our mission. I could not believe how he kept taking on new projects and completed them all so quickly .

Jessica was a huge help with a lot of the organization , plant care and administrative work & structure re: the sanctuary and was consistently bringing new ideas forward .

They both went above and beyond cooking for the team here , excellent cooks and were able to create amazing meals with whatever we had on hand and they also cleaned up and reorganized our work areas constantly.

I had to take some time away to visit relatives during their stay, which is very rare for me . It is difficult for me to leave the property and care of the animals but after a short time I knew I could trust this duo with the care of all the animals . Before I left some of the animals had some health scares and I
Watched them both step up to take over care of advanced medical needs . They were comfortable giving medication, caring for wounds and beyond .

They also jumped into some heavy farm work and did an excellent job . Both are very strong and have no issue with very physical projects . There were many many things they both did that I didn't ask them to do . Multiple times they would come to me AFTER doing other projects letting me know of an idea to improve something and would ask if it would be ok if they could do another job. This is rare of course yet something they both did frequently .

I would recommend Jess and Simon to anyone and would love to have them back anytime . In addition to the hard work they were so much fun to be around , great stories and personalities . They were also super considerate to everyone around they and always very aware of making everyone around them happy . The animals also absolutely adored them both as they showed them so much love and attention.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Help at a non-profit ...)

We had a wonderful experience with Lisa's beautiful family of animals. We made lovely new friends with the other workaway as well! It is a very special spot and we hope to see everyone again in the future.
