Hi! My name is Ty and I'm 20 years old from Sydney, Australia. I'm currently studying a Bachelors of Psychology here in Sydney, but I love to travel and volunteer. In 2023, I took a gap year after high school and used workaway extensively whilst solo travelling. I've rejoined now because I'm hoping to do some volunteering during my mid-year university break!

To tell you a little bit about me, I am a very outgoing, social person who loves trying and doing new things. I love having unique experiences that I learn from, and I think this is best exemplified in some of my past volunteering trips, whether it be farming in the Japanese countryside, staying at an animal sanctuary in Hawaii, or teaching English in Morocco. I also really enjoy meeting and getting to know new people from different backgrounds. I believe there is so much to see and do, and meeting others from around the world feels like such an exciting way to do so.

In terms of hobbies, I quite enjoy being active. At home, I like to go swimming, running, climbing, surfing, hiking, to the gym or to Muay Thai. I also used to play a lot of indoor and beach volleyball during school, which I still really enjoy. I believe staying active and looking after your health is really important! In my slower moments, I like to read, journal or learn a language. I also like to draw, paint and play the piano but admittedly, I don't get much time to do that in a busy city like Sydney!

I love the idea of learning languages. I believe it allows you to connect with a completely new group of people on a new level of understanding. It opens up a lot of doors. I can speak English and Thai fluently, though I can only teach English because I never wrote or read Thai growing up. I've been learning French since high school, so this is my 4th/5th year of learning! I also studied Japanese last year, and am currently trying to start a language from scratch! I'm debating between Spanish and Swahili. The goal is that one day I can speak so many different languages and have many connections around the world from all the cool experiences and interactions that my language learning journey takes me!

At home, I work as a tutor and support worker. Support workers aid individuals with various disabilities; however, as a psychology student, I work more closely with individuals with mental health conditions such as schizophrenia. As a tutor, I have also developed a strong base in teaching a variety of subjects, such as Maths, English, French, Geography, and Science. These two roles have strengthened my interpersonal and communication skills, allowing me to be adaptable and work well with a variety of individuals.

Beyond these roles, I am enthusiastic and capable of handling various hands-on tasks, including cleaning and manual labor. Under guidance, I have worked with materials like cement and wood to construct structures such as stairs and fences.

Additionally, I have participated in multiple workaways, which have allowed me to gain experience in diverse fields, including childcare, farm work, and animal care. Through university, I have also developed skills in creating online content for social media.

I am an adaptable individual who thrives in different environments and is always eager to learn and contribute in meaningful ways.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Join our family in the Alps ...)

I stayed with the Tuttinos for 2 weeks and I can definitely say that staying with them has been such a lovely experience :) I left just this afternoon but I like to do my reviews fast (especially if I like the place) so I can capture all the details that are still fresh in my mind, so here we go! I got to meet the Tuttinos for the first time… read more actually in June/July? of this year, when I stayed at the workaway right next to their house. It was purely by chance, but the kids I would help look after and spend time with at the other workaway house liked to go over to this house (which was especially easy, as their houses are connected) and spend time with the 13 year old, Sam. Because of this, I got to meet most of their family and become friends with most of the kids (3/4 as the eldest wasn't there at that time) whom I kept in contact with after leaving! They left a really great impression on me last time, so I decided that it would be really nice if I could come back and visit them again, so that's what I did!

The region of France that they live in is incredibly gorgeous. Mountains and nature everywhere. Last time I was here, it was Spring, but this time it was Autumn, so there were a lot of gorgeous orange trees everywhere. Coming from Sydney, being surrounded by all this nature was a really nice change. Unfortunately, it was quite rainy while I was there, but that's okay because I don't mind being a homebody every now and then. I generally spent my days doing a few light and easy chores Céline would give me, reading, going on walks/runs, trying to learn some more French, cooking or baking, or frankly just sitting there (likely with a cat on my lap). I feel it's always nice to get the opportunity to slow down every once in a while. It gives me the opportunity to think and reflect on my life which is always great.

I tried to coincide my stay with the holidays of the kids at first, so it was nice to spend time with them in the beginning, and we got to do more fun activities, but around a week after they had to go back. Marion, the second eldest, goes to university in Paris, so she was only there for a short while, Pierre the third eldest, goes to high school in a nearby city, but boards during the week, and Sam, the youngest goes to a middle school nearby, but is still quite busy due to his biathlon training. This gave me a lot of time to myself, which I didn't mind at all. But for others, this might be less ideal. Maybe just keep this in mind. However, if luck has it, you will have good weather and can go on many adventures during the day! It is also ideal if you can drive manual :)

Some of the highlights of my stay included:

- Spending time with the family sharing meals and eating ungodly amounts of cheese
- Going for walks and really taking in all the nature
- Admiring SO many autumn leaves
- A little trip the children took me on to the top of a nearby mountain when there was snow (legitimate winter wonderland)
- Playing cards and games or watching movies with the family
- Peacefully baking away in the kitchen
- Their cats!!!
- Going on runs in the freezing cold and rain, even though it wasn't necessarily super fun, it was definitely an experience to remember!
- And perhaps most touching of all was when Marion, whom I had met up with in Paris before coming down, bought me a gift for my birthday. I spent my birthday in Sydney, but she texted me a couple days before asking if it was soon. I was super impressed already, because I probably only talked about it once in the maybe 4 days I saw her last time. Anyways, there was a ghibli pop up shop in Paris while I was there, and we were talking about it, but I didn't get the chance to go. We talked about our shared love for ghibli last time I was there, but I didn't realise she would remember and get me something from there. Not only that, but she had probably had it the whole time she was back at home, but waited to leave before letting her parents give it to me. There is something very very sweet about people who leave a gift for you without being there in person. It sort of feels so selfless in a way. Anyways, I admittedly cried twice because of the gesture. Once was at night when I was feeling very emotional and grateful for everything that has happened so far, and again the very next day when I told my mum on the phone what had happened. I think this is the first time I've ever cried over someone getting me a gift. The kindness and thoughtfulness of the gesture just really touched me, especially because I didn't expect it at all.

Overall, this family is incredibly sweet and a really good example of a solid and loving family unit. The children are obviously great and I hope to keep in contact with them far into the future. I even made a deal with the youngest that I'll return again when he makes 1000 euros with his first business! (Which may sound a bit outrageous but he is very smart and was already trying to do this while I was gone, and I can't make the goal too easy otherwise I'd be obliged to take another pricey flight to France soon hahhaa). To the Tuttinos, it has been a great privilege to visit, and I will see you all again soon, maybe in France, or maybe in Sydney!

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Hola ! Hello ! Join our ...)

Well, where do I even start? I left Justine and Chris's this morning, and I felt I had to write this immediately to better process this experience. Coming into this workaway, I had not many expectations. I knew I just wanted to be in the midst of a French family, not only to experience a different way of living within a different family but also… read more to experience life with younger kids (as I am the youngest in my family, and never normally interact with them otherwise). I knew that there was much to be gained from this new experience, except I didn't know what.

Now, as I leave, I can say that not only have I learnt so much, but I have also been blessed with incredible memories that I will cherish for a long long time.

From the get go, Christoph and Justine hardly asked me to do anything. I was confused, as I am used to a more strict rough 5 hours of working time with my previous workaways. However, as I came to understand, Chris and Justine's main emphasis wasn't the physical work so to speak, but rather the value of the interaction between their children and foreigners like myself, who bring a different part of the world into their home. It took me a little time to comprehend this, as I felt I wasn't pulling my weight. However, once I got used to it, I started to really enjoy myself and my time with them. For the most part, I spent time with Simon and Martin, as they are home the most. Being with them taught me a lot. Not only did it remind me of the importance of play and fun in the cultivation of a healthy lifestyle, they also taught me patience, understanding, and strength. And perhaps most importantly, we shared many great memories together. Whether it was one of the French card games they wanted to play, or talking about this and that, or playing basketball, frisbee, handball, activities in the forest, drawing, lego, etc, it was a privilege to be able to spend time with them.

Chris and Justine themselves were also incredibly helpful, accommodating and kind during my stay. My bus got delayed by 4 hours in the beginning, making my arrival go from 8pm to midnight, not to mention my early bus out this morning, so I am very grateful for their efforts in picking up and dropping me off. They cooked very nutritious and healthy foods, which I appreciated, and there was always enough food for me to eat. They were also very easy and laid back with me. They were generous with 'days off', although it's hard to call it that because every day felt like a day off to me - interacting with the children never felt like work. As a result, I never really wanted to take a day off. I think I took two in the span of 3 weeks. One to visit Annecy town, and the other to go swimming in Annecy lake. Being at their house was so great that I didn't really want to leave for a 'day off'. Justine also sent me many great recommendations throughout my time there, whether it was hikes, beaches, or cooking classes.

I feel it's also necessary to mention how absolutely STUNNING the area is. The mountain view from the home and the endless fields of grass around were all unreal. I still remember going on a run with the kids during the beginning of my stay, and being really shocked at how gorgeous it all was. For the most part, the scenery of this place felt like a green screen. It was a beautiful change from city life in Sydney, and I consider myself incredibly lucky to be able to spend time here. I adore the fact that they live so closely with nature - a well-intentioned decision. The children benefit very clearly from it, and to be honest, I kind of felt like I was living a childhood I never lived when I went into the forest or ran around the grass fields with them, or went on a walk/run/ride through the countryside. Sometimes I just had to take a moment to appreciate it all. I think I spent one night outside just staring at the moon and appreciating the mystery of it all for a long long time. The way the sun shines through the trees of the forest, or the wind blows beautiful patterns through the grass, or how the plants glow from the morning sun, there is so much nature here to observe and enjoy. We even saw a double rainbow from the terrace one evening, it was so beautiful. And of course, you can't forget Annecy lake and Annecy town. They give you an E-bike to use during your stay, so definitely check it out. It's real life fairy tale stuff.

In terms of my routine, I would try to do my own things when the children were occupied with home school or away for one of their co-curriculars (music, sports, etc). I would read, exercise, draw, journal, go for walks/runs, play the piano, or occasionally try to cook something. So you have lots of time to do what you want as well, which I really appreciated.

I think another severely underrated thing about staying here, is how amazing the neighbours are. I came into this experience not even thinking about them, but left spending some of my last moments with them. Their house is attached to the neighbours, in what used to be a big barn/farmhouse of sorts, so there's quite a bit of interaction between them, especially for the kids. The neighbours also have 4 kids, and also WWOOFERS which were great to hang out with and talk to. Anyways, Lucy, the oldest, which I never met because she is away at university. Marion, the same age as me, who is away for high school during the week but home on weekends (although she will be finished in a couple of days). Pierre, a year younger than me who was home during the whole of my stay because of his injury. And Sam, a 13 year old who goes to middle school nearby. I'm not even sure how to describe it well enough, but I really enjoyed spending time with them too. Simon and Martin really liked spending time with Sam, so I would be there as well. As a result, we became quick friends. And believe me, I never thought I could be friends with a 13 year old either, but this year has proven surprising in multiple ways. From having pancake cook-offs, Izakaya visits, bike rides, flower bouquet-making competitions, and races with a 50 year old friend I met in Japan, to wrestling, playing frisbee or minecraft, talking about absolute nonsense, and climbing a mountain with a 13 year old, this year just keeps on proving that life has got so much in store. Sam was a lot of fun to be around. He's young, but he laughs a lot and has always got ideas. He's a talented kid with lots of interesting interests. For Pierre and Marion, they were so funny and great to be around. We spent a lot of time playing a card game I taught them - Nertz - which I learnt from other workawayers in Japan (thank you Mika and Azeem), which was so fun. We shared a lot of great laughs, and I really enjoyed just going over to talk to them about anything and everything. I'll miss them. They're a crazy bunch. Literally. Sam likes eating biscuits dipped in water so they are literally insane. But jokes aside they were an amazing experience of serendipity. Be sure to hang out with them if you can and tell them I said hi :)

All in all, this was such a beautiful experience. You know it was good when it feels weird to leave, and I definitely feel weird thinking about the fact that I don't know when I will see them again, or the fact that none of this will ever be the same. Goodbyes have been weird when I travel, but alas I am very sentimental. I will cherish the memories I made and hope to return one day. You have all been amazing, and thank you for everything. I wish I could spend more time with everyone, but my next adventure awaits. Until next time. Lots of love ❤️❤️❤️
