Hello! Our names are Reilly and Kayla. We are from the Northeast section of the USA and have been married since September of 2022. We love being outside and exploring new places. During the summers, we work as the directors of a summer camp for children. We have both previously worked as managers of a retreat center. In addition to several seasonal jobs we have both worked, Reilly has also worked as a wilderness therapy guide and field director. Kayla also works as a massage therapist and yoga instructor. We are happiest when spending equal amounts of time being active and introspective.
Kayla's favorite hobbies: sewing, knitting, rock climbing, gardening, and going for walks.
Reilly's favorite hobbies: reading, hiking, board games/D&D, rock climbing, and skiing.

Kayla:

Massage Therapy - I have been practicing since completing massage school in 2016. I'm a certified Massage Therapist with training in Swedish, deep tissue, Thai, Lomi-Lomi, and Reiki.

Yoga - I've been practicing yoga for years and in 2020 I finally had the opportunity to take a 200hr yoga teacher training in Thailand. I love teaching yoga classes, especially slow flow Vinyasa. I have taught classes for a wide range of ability levels and experiences.

Interpersonal - I have a lot of experience working with people and helping them feel comfortable. I always try to keep a positive attitude!

Cooking - While I have no formal training, I have experience cooking for events and retreat groups of 20 people or less. I'm vegan, so I usually only cook vegan food. But I think I do a good job of creating diverse, healthy, flavorful meals.

Reilly:

Interpersonal/Social - Most of my work experience is in managing staff or programming. I like to think that I am a friendly and charismatic person who is able to connect with most anyone and make them feel welcome. I pride myself on being patient, thoughtful, and calm when problem solving.

Organizational Support - I have a basic competency with most basic digital software and have experience helping organizational systems run smoothly. In my regular jobs I've done a lot of emailing, spreadsheets, client contacting, photography, blogging, marketing etc.

Basic Maintenance and Organizing - I am decent with most common power and hand tools. I'm also pretty good at organizing storage areas, clearing trails, and cleaning up.

Vom Workawayer (Reilly & Kayla) für Host (Help with our rescue dogs and ...)

What a perfect Workaway experience! My wife and I spent almost 6 weeks at Claire and Lanny's this spring and strongly recommend them as hosts. Their cave diving business is very impressive and a cool atmosphere to be around whether you have experience or not. We went scuba diving for the first time on this trip and loved it! Also Claire's near… read more martyr-level care for people and animals is inspiring. She commits all of her free time to nurturing the wellness of local animals in the community and will regularly take in sick puppies from the street to get them healthy enough for adoption. Much of your tasks will be helping to care for the dogs and taking them for walks in the jungle, so I recommend that you only consider this Workaway if you enjoy being around dogs! If you do, this opportunity is perfect for you.

Claire was incredibly kind and a very effective communicator. She would give us our schedule at the start of each week and was appreciative for all completed work. Our primary tasks were walking the dogs first thing in the morning, making lunches for guests, and running errands (for example picking up laundry). As long as we were properly prioritizing our tasks, Claire was very accommodating and flexible. We were able to occasionally move aspects of our schedule around to accomplish remote work for our jobs back home.

This Workaway is the ideal setup for couples! The living space was comfortable and private. It is essentially a small suite with a bedroom, bathroom, and living room/kitchenette. The location was great! We were not right downtown (which in Tulum is a good thing, because the downtown is bustling and noisy all night), but we could walk to any type of restaurant within 10-20 minutes. There is also an amazing food truck area called Palma Central that is 3 blocks away. They have regular live music and host salsa dancing lessons every Tuesday night. In addition to walking, Claire and Lanny have bikes that we were able to use, which was wonderful! Also, because many of the tasks involve driving to places like the grocery store, it was very easy to get food or specialty items in town whenever we needed.

In terms of cultural exchange / homestay, this experience was our ideal setup with the perfect balance. We had our own space and were encouraged to do our own thing, but we also had so many resources and community. We could interact with guests from all over, connect with Claire and Lanny about their experience over 10+ years in Tulum, and practice our Spanish while out on errands and with the wonderful housekeeper Martha who has a heart of gold! Also, because Claire is always volunteering in the community supporting animals, we were invited (totally optional) to spend one weekend in a temporary clinic built downtown to help support veterinarians who work long hours neutering, spaying, and giving medical attention to local dogs and cats.

Tulum was a great jumping off point for many activities near and far! Within biking distance, our favorites were snorkeling and scuba diving in cenotes (Cenote Escondido is a 12 minute bike ride), swimming at the beach, and eating at delicious vegan restaurants. We also loved taking public transit to swim with Turtles in Akumal, spend a weekend at the Lagoon in Bacalar, and journey inland to Valladolid to see the beautiful town and massive ruins.
