Beschreibung

We are a young Canadian couple doing our best to live life to its creative and whimsical max. We’re currently on something of a sabbatical, backpacking around the world for eight months with the aim of expanding our global understanding. In everyday life, Johann works as an Engineer In Training in HVAC and plumbing and Rachel works as an environmental consultant (botany, wildlife) but will hopefully be returning to school for graduate studies in performing arts. We probably have too many hobbies, but deeply enjoy them all, especially hiking, photography, and skiing. We are very excited to join Workaway and immerse ourselves in different cultures and landscapes, volunteer our time and skills, and connect with people and places from all over!

Johann is both fascinated by technology but also likes to work with his hands, which fits pretty well with his engineering degree. He is adept at computer programming (Python, C++) and computer hardware, having built two computers and setting up a personal server system within the past two years. He also enjoys photography and fixing things with tools (he’s especially fond of a good ratcheting screwdriver). Johann has experience volunteering with children, having worked with young people at an overnight summer camp, a local science centre, and as a volunteer judge at a recent science fair. He is also able to care for cats and dogs based on his experience with them as pets. Music has always been a large part of his life, and he has trained in voice, piano, and clarinet, played in multiple ensembles and sang in choir. Jazz is an obsession.

Rachel enjoys existing at the confluence of science and art, having received undergraduate degrees in both music and biology. She taught piano to children for three years, and also led and developed nature interpretive programs for all ages over the course of three summers. Most recently, she spent two years working as an environmental consultant in botany, wetland and wildlife ecology. She is able to learn local plant ID, and nurture garden plants. Rachel is also an oral storyteller who recently completed a mentorship program with a professional storyteller, the culmination of which was an interdisciplinary performance show about peatlands.
