Hi! We're a couple from the UK and USA who met and lived in Japan for nearly two years with a shared passion for travelling. One of our favourite things about life in semi-rural Kyushu was how we could engage with local communities, forming bonds in unexpected places and meeting some fantastic people. We enjoyed learning about life in a community very different to our own so much so that we ended up travelling around SE Asia and Oceania for two months following the end of our contract.

Tom: Hi, I worked in film sound for a bit before moving to Japan to teach English for nearly two years. Travelling is a bug I’ve been harbouring for a while now and I especially love exploring nature, mountains, and getting to know local spots. As well as the outdoors, I love films, stories, getting on the water (I want to sail around the world someday), scuba diving, cooking and sustainable living (something I’m keen to learn how to do more). I’m vegan, for a number of reasons, and one of them is I think kindness to all animals (humans included) is the key to a better world.

Julia: I'm originally from Alabama (US), but have lived in Oregon, Montana, and most recently Kyushu. My hobbies are reading, playing team sports, crafting, and making friends all over the world. I love supporting independent businesses and artists, and have enjoyed finding unique shops, museums, and exhibitions across Japan. I want to learn to sew and one day own a kiln. My long term goal is to be able to make all of my clothes with 100% recycled fabric.

Was könntest du arbeiten?

Thomas has worked on an animal sanctuary for a short while, animal care, mainly caring for sheep, goats, and a singular massive pig. I'm comfortable around animals and care for them deeply. Lots of dog experience. Tech skills relating to film, film audio, and some limited computing. I setup a local compost bin, and have some DIY construction experience with my father. I have barista experience, and previously worked as a cleaner, hotel receptionist, warehouse labourer, tester for a social media startup, and freelance field recordist. I value hard work and look forward to sharing my time and skills, but also especially learning new skills from others.

I (Julia) have worked food service and retail, and also performed grant writing, fundraising, and event coordination for community programs in Portland tackling social issues amongst other things. I have volunteered in community gardens and built gardens in the past. I've done a fair amount of travelling and have a deep interest in religions and cultures around the world. Many years of experience working with and caring for children.

Was noch ...

Thomas loves cycling/biking, camping and getting lost in the countryside. We both love learning to cook new dishes, and would love to help in the kitchen when possible! Julia enjoys playing basketball, soccer, and volleyball, but she is not very good at tennis. Thomas loves tennis! We both enjoy being outside and enjoying nature. We love crafts and getting creative, being by the sea, skiing, reading, films and TV, history, food, chocolate, and obviously travelling. We have lots of hobbies and are always picking up new ones.
