I’m a 22-year-old civil engineering student from Canada who’s always been curious about the world. Growing up, I was lucky to travel often, which sparked my love for exploring new cultures, trying new foods, and connecting with people everywhere I go. I’m currently gaining professional experience in civil engineering, having worked on airport and roadway design projects as well as traffic modelling. I’ve also been a private tutor for almost a decade, helping students from 3 to 20 years old develop their confidence and curiosity in math, sciences, and languages (English & French).

When I’m not working or travelling, I love staying active — weightlifting, mountain biking, running, and hiking are my go-tos.

Was könntest du arbeiten?

As a civil engineering student, I’ve developed strong problem-solving, teamwork, and project planning skills that I can apply in many different settings. I enjoy hands-on work and don’t mind getting involved in physical tasks, whether that’s helping with construction, outdoor projects, or community initiatives.

Beyond my studies, I’ve been a private tutor for nearly 10 years, helping students aged 3 to 20 in subjects like math, science, and languages. This experience has taught me patience, communication, and how to adapt to different learning styles — skills that I think are valuable in any volunteer environment, especially when working with children or in education-focused projects.

I’m fluent in English, French, Spanish, and Farsi, which helps me connect easily with people from diverse backgrounds. I’m also passionate about health, fitness, and the outdoors, and I love contributing to meaningful projects that bring people together and make a positive difference.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Join us at a summer camp for ...)

This was my first Workaway experience and it was nothing short of amazing. This summer camp is at 20 foot steps away from a beautiful reservoir where I’d go swimming every day. There are also many hikes behind the camp in the mountains which offer gorgeous views. The camp itself is structured as follows:
- wake up around 8-9am for breakfast (you … read more can sleep in and skip it if you’d like)
- 9:40am to 11am are English classes where you are assigned to groups of kids to visit. The lessons are very informal and mostly interactive games. It’s up to you to bring new ideas or continue with their existing activities
- 11am to 1pm is club time. You can go partake in any club or even just chat with the kids all over the camp
- 1pm to 2pm is usually lunch. The kitchen staff are always very busy so I tried to help out when I could which they appreciated a lot
- 2pm to 4pm is nap time so all the kids go back to their dorms and the camp is quiet. Perfect time to relax yourself or go swimming or hiking. They are very flexible in terms of how long you’d like to be out of the camp for. Just let the staff know in advance. They never say no!
- 4pm to 7pm is when the groups practice their performances for the evening. Every day it’s different, sometimes it’s a video, a dance, a skit…
- 7pm to 8pm is dinner
- 8pm to 9pm is when their performances are shown
- 9:30 to 10:30pm there is usually a disco with a mix of Russian and English music. It’s a blast to see all the energy when a song comes on that all the kids know.

Throughout the day, the kids are very curious and interested to spark conversation and connect with you. Other than the scheduled English lessons, the rest is up to you to make the most of it. You decide how engaged you’d like to be, what clubs you want to partake in, which students you want to chat with… the flexibility was amazing and truly lets you get the experience you want.

Also, the food at the camp never disappointed. There is always something new and it’s usually very tasty. Huge hats off to all the kitchen staff!

Only small downside is that if the camp is overbooked (which was the case for the one season I attended), some volunteers like myself were required to share rooms with teenagers.

Overall, it was an amazing experience and I’d highly recommend it to anyone who wants to engage with children in Uzbekistan and learn a little Russian along the way!
