Hello & moin :)

My name is Mikosch, I am 30 years old and I live in the beautiful German city of Hamburg where most of my friends, my parents, as well as my brother and sister with their children also live.

As I have spent all my life in different cities in Germany so far, last year I made the decision to pause my career for a 12-month sabbatical to go out into the world and get to know different countries, languages and cultures. Therefore, my girlfriend and I have been traveling since November 2024. From summer 2025 onwards, she will return to Germany for work, but I will continue traveling for another six months.

I asked myself if there were any opportunities to do something meaningful and helpful and to combine it with my interest for new experiences. With Workaway, I am quite confident that I have found what I was looking for.

As I have been a (youth) soccer coach for 10 years after my federal volunteer service after finishing school I am looking for a project where I can contribute these experiences. Generally, I believe there is only good in sports and that volunteering in this area can only lead to positive effects.
In addition, I am also interested in teaching children in school. My experience as a tutor and giving extra lessons has shown me that both the students and I enjoy it and benefit from it.

After graduating from high school, I completed a Federal Volunteer Service (BFD) at a football club. In addition to practical tasks such as mowing the pitches, I was responsible for five teams from different age groups as well as two school extracurricular activities. Since then, I have taken on a youth team as a permanent coach and trained them for ten years until they transitioned to the adult division.

After my BFD, I studied business administration and worked various student jobs on the side.

For the past six years, I have been working in European E-Commerce at a major traditional German company, during which time I also completed my master's degree while working. As my customers are international I am used to speaking English. In addition, I can speak a bit of French and I am currently learning to speak Spanish.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Helping to teach and coach ...)

I spent a month in Arusha and had such a great time that I can fully recommend this experience to everyone!
So if you're thinking about whether you should do it or not: just do it.
I really felt at home after just one week, which I hadn't expected beforehand. I got to know a total of 7 other volunteers from IT, FR, MX, ES and AT during my time,… read more with whom I went on a few excursions and had a lot of fun.
You quickly adapt to the Tanzanian way of life (including the non-Western toilet) and you learn to be flexible when there is no water or electricity. There is good WiFi available so that you can call home etc. and if it sometimes doesn't work it shouldn't be a huge problem – after all, you're not here to watch Netflix movies ;-)
The food from MamaD and Dada was really delicious – I hadn't expected that either. It is varied and healthier than at (my) home, often with rice, beans or plantains (occasionally with meat/fish) and of course Weza's favorite dish, ugali!

I found 1 month to be the perfect length and would recommend being there for at least 3 weeks to really get to know everything authentically. After my time, Weza also arranged my safari (3d/2n Serengeti & Ngorongoro), which I can also recommend to anyone.

In the mornings, I was at the pre-school and assisted wherever I could (e.g. helping children, correcting homework, writing assignments in exercise books, drawing posters, reading books to the kids, sports activities, serving breakfast and lunch, providing tables and chairs). I also actively helped with some of the teaching, but normally the local teachers do this with their sheer endless energy. As the children are still of kindergarten age, you shouldn't have any problems with a high volume level and lots of repetition of English words/phrases. I always enjoyed starting the day in the morning with the movement activities to really wake up.

I then trained various soccer teams in the afternoons, as I am also active as a coach in my home country. In the first week, I only watched from the outside to see how things worked. So you don't need to prepare anything in advance in your home country and you have enough time to work out your training sessions on site (if you decide to be a coach at all). The conditions (especially the rather small and hilly pitch) are a challenge, but that's what makes it so special. The players handle it remarkably well and everyone has a lot of fun together, which is the most important thing.

I am very happy about my decision to come here and get such a nice first experience with workaway.
