Kia ora! Here is a brief summary of us :)
We met sailing in England on a traditional wooden ship. We have been living together between Maya's sailing boat and Jake's van in Devon and Cornwall. We have both had a busy summer working and are super excited for our new adventure together. Jake has been busy rigging and stage managing at some of the UK's biggest music festivals, while Maya has been working on an old sailing boat in Scotland as first mate, skipper and cook. We are both very practical and hard working people, we like to get our hands dirty. We love to share our skills and knowledge and want to learn as much as we can from our hosts! We are both curious, inquisitive and open minded and love to share stories and music.
Maya studied environmental management and sustainability and has worked as a language teacher, supply teacher in schools, sailor and chef amongst other jobs. She visited North Island in 2023/2024, doing a bit of travelling and work-awaying, but mainly lived in the bay of Islands. She worked as crew on different boats in the bay, and was chef at the Gables restaurant. She fell in love with the lifestyle, nature and energy of Aotearoa, and has been looking forward to returning for the last year.
Jake is very handy and great at fixing and building, he can drive just about anything, from motorbikes to telehandlers, and is also a very skilled musician and trained sound engineer!
We are looking to help our hosts and in return learn about the ways you live off the land kiwi style. In particular we'd love to learn more about fishing, hunting, food gardens, animal care and sustainable living.
