I’m Marie, 22 and currently on my way to find what I wanna do next. Therefore I’m doing bike, work & travel. So I’m doing bike packing but also want to have an exchange and a more detailed view about the culture of the country I’m traveling. Also I love doing this by bike because you see a lot not too slow but also not too fast. On the same hand I like to stay in one place and get to know the culture and people of the country more deeply. I’ve done woofing in Sweden for two months two years ago and really loved how I could expand my mind and meeting new people.
Besides traveling and farming I also really love baking and cooking :) and my family and friends love the results too :)

I’m good in cooking and baking, I’m always doing that at home and my family and friends love the results. I also like being outside and do work there weeding, plant, harvest whatever currently is necessary. I’ve woofed in Sweden 2 months in farms where I learned a lot about farming. Once we also created a new bed. But besides I I’m a very curious person and willing to do a task until it is finished :)

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Help on an eco farm near ...)

I stayed at the farm for a week and helped her with harvesting the olives together with a friend and another Workaway guy.

Sandi is an American women who lives together with her teenage daughter in an former rural farm house in Guadix. The house is quite small because it is full with anything and nothing but you’re able to have a space for… read more yourself. Either in the attic or a small bedroom, depending what you get assigned. The house has no installed heating system besides a fireplace so it mostly stays really cold (~15 degrees Celsius).

She has two cats which like to sneak into your bags if you don’t close them properly and are quite aggressive. Maybe because they can’t go outside or get enough food?

To the house also belongs a big field with a lot of olive trees. Unfortunately they have not been taken care of in years. The nets are cheap and holey and the buckets more or less functional. Because of that harvesting the olives was quite complicated and harder than on an actual farm. E.g. You needed to bend branches or „fight“ against weeds.

It was also a bit sad that we had to learn the harvesting process from the other Workaway guy, who had already experience in harvesting olives, since it was her first olive harvest ever.

Most of the times Sandi took care of the food which was very basic non salted, often pre-made supermarket meals and very less since she doesn’t eat a lot and kinda expected that from us too. Once the oats for breakfast run out… but overall with an extra slice of bread we still got full e.g.

Unfortunately there were a few misunderstandings due to very little things because of unspoken expectations or not really meant offers which leaded to a bit of a grumpy mood on both sides. Sometimes you didn’t even realise you’ve done something „wrong“. Unfortunately it also was not possible to talk about these misunderstandings to her and solve them. The direct communication could have been better.

In general she is aware of a sustainable lifestyle and climate change and you can have good conversations with her about these topics as well as a bout her work with biochar.

P.S. A little note to her feedback. I was properly prepared and equipped for the work. I would never apply for a job I’m not capable for. Also it is possible for me living without WiFi it is just sometimes convenient to have it if you want to plan your travel further and do some research.

vom Host für Workawayer ()

Marie and her friend Katharina (no Workaway profile) came to stay for a week for the Olive harvest.

I think it was a learning experience for all of us! It was the first time we have ever harvested olives and we were still learning. The gals were not really equipped to work on a farm. I lent Marie boots, gloves and a long sleeve shirt since she… read more didn't have good footware, etc for working. Also, I felt bad for her because she was not prepared for farm life in rural Spain. Spanish houses are cold, the tile floors are cold, and the only heating in houses here is a fireplace. Poor Marie was always cold! (Which was funny because they are biking and camping around Spain in November. Haha.) Also, we have (good) cellular service, but no wifi, but I think for this generation that's a struggle.

PROS:
-She successfully participated in the harvest.
-It was also nice to see a young woman speak up and use her negotiation skills to tactfully negotiate a half day off in exchange for leaving a day early.
- her English is very good.
-She was friendly with our family and also several times offered to help chop food for meals.
-Also after she saw how to light the fireplace, a she took initiative the next night to build a fire since I was too busy preparing meals for the workers.

CONS:
-She wasn't prepared or equipped to work on a farm.
-She mentioned becoming tired and sore after doing this type of work. By midweek, she was dragging and maybe a little grumpy. Lol
-I think she and her friend got a bit entangled with the negativity of the third worker.
- There was a bit of confusion about meals. I served them the designated meals, but they were continually raiding the kitchen at meal time adding more and more to the meal. They nearly ate me out of house and home! Maybe this was partly my fault for having an open kitchen. Also, food, milk, etc was sometimes was not put away. Also, sadly, they picked fruit from the land and then didn't eat it and left it to rot on the table.
- They had a personal roof terrace off their attic bedroom. After they left, I found a big sticky spilled mess left for me to mop up. Plus there were drink/tea drips on the (freshly cleaned) blanket and on a (formerly) white comforter.
-Neither was there much respect for cleaning up messes they made in the kitchen, on floors or on the table or patios & terrace. We had a lot of cleaning up after they left, inside and out.
- She hounded us many days while here, and also for a week afterward, to give her olive oil (the friend also. The friend also wanted some for herself, her family, and gifts for her friends). And while it was out original intent to gift all of the workers some olive oil, once it became an entitlement or expectation, it didn't feel good anymore. Out of curiosity, I asked one of my AI apps why I was so resistant to gift them olive oil now. Here was the insightful answer it gave: "Humans feel good about giving a gift because it activates the reward center in the brain, associated with pleasure and social bonding. It reinforces feelings of generosity, altruism, and connection with the recipient. However, when someone feels entitled to a gift, it undermines the intention behind the gift, shifting the focus from the act of giving to the expectation of receiving. This can lead to feelings of resentment, frustration, and a sense of being taken advantage of. Additionally, feeling entitled can disrupt the balance of reciprocity in social relationships, where giving and receiving are ideally mutually beneficial and voluntary."

OVERALL: It was a learning experience for all of us! Probably Marie is better suited for less labor-type work, and not in the cold. Maybe housework? Also, it can sometimes be difficult having strangers in your house and on the flip side, being the stranger. Everybody has their own way of doing things, cleaning, etc. We made it through the week though. I hope that Marie does not take this feedback as disparagement, but rather as topics of personal growth which she can learn from and mature from, as she moves into adulthood. It is good for young people to seek out new experiences and learn about the world, different cultures and how people do things differently than how she might have experienced the world growing up. I applaud her efforts to see new things and hope she gains insights and new understandings.

She quickly fell in with all that was to be done , painting the kitchen, and picking the blackcurrants.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Gardening and woodland help ...)

I were able to stay with Áine for two weeks and had a great time!
In my time there I repainted the kitchen, picked black currents and preserved them as a jam or cake, watered the tunnel, cut the grass and helped here with some work for the bees.
