Hi, my name is Katharina. I am currently studying a Masters programme in English literature and like to spend my uni breaks staying in different countries as I love cultural exchange. Last year I did my first workaway and found it to be a great travelling experience - it took me out of my own bubble and let me meet people and see life realities that were inspiringly different from the ones I am usually surrounded by. I am a rather calm person who enjoys listening to other people's stories and has an interest in music and Northern European languages. What I lack in practical work experience (especially gardening/renovation) I do my best to make up for by curiosity and openness to acquiring new skills :). I would love to stay somewhere close to nature and am looking forward to meeting locals!

If desired, I could teach beginners in some of my stronger languages, or help with the language learning process, as I have worked as a tutor of school kids before. I am always interested in improving my language skills, but am not specifically looking for this in my work stay.

Was könntest du arbeiten?
I am best skilled in my humanities studies, meaning text writing, languages (English, German, Swedish, French, Russian). My family has a dog and I have looked after children before. Otherwise I am of average skill in ordinary tasks - cooking, cleaning (I am a tidy person), driving; and happy to learn anything new and adapt as necessary!

I spend a lot of my time learning about 19th century English literature and British studies, I play the cello, a bit of piano, and love going to rock/pop concerts. I couldn't picture my life without cultural exchange and multilingual settings and often seek out international circles.

Vom Workawayer (Katharina) für Host (Come and help look after ...)

This was my first workaway and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Liz and Raich are incredibly kind and committed hosts who went out of their ways to make me feel at home and comfortable with all the jobs. Both are very hardworking people who try to help others where they can, it was inspiring witnessing their life ethic and listening to everything they had to say and share.
Liz works fulltime as a barrister while also training for a marathon and looking after all the animals she took in over the years. It is incredible seeing all the things she does, and she welcomed me to her house with an interested openness and continued to treat me and the other workaways with great warmth. She is so caring and attentive to detail when it comes to looking out for you. She kindly took me along with her on some really nice trips, and would sometimes cook delicious meals for all of us in the house.
Rachel is a passionate cyclist as well as runner and never really sits still. She introduced me to most of the work that needed doing around the house and taught me everything I wanted to know. Her openness, patience and skill are remarkable, and you can really tell her love for her furry friends and the outdoors. If daily routine threatened to become a bit dull she made sure to find something interesting for everyone to do, and her humour is trademark, guaranteeing some entertaining times.

The work itself mainly involved walking the dogs several times a day and feeding all animals, as well as doing the odd gardening or maintenance job around the house, all of which is manageable even if you are not the fittest or most work-experienced of persons. I found the work to be fairly enjoyable. There was plenty of off-time, and I got to learn some fun new things, like how to carry a chicken or chop wood.

I remember my time with Liz and Raich fondly and I hope to stay in contact with them. A stay with them is ideal for any animal lovers who enjoy walking a lot every day and don't mind living in the quiet countryside. If you are willing to adopt the dog routines and stick to the few and sensible house rules, which are there for the dogs and everyone's benefit, I couldn't recommend a better place to do a workaway. Rachel and Liz do their best to be fair and warm to everyone they receive and I have deep respect and gratitude for them. It was a privilege being able to care for their much-loved dogs and cats, getting to know all of these different silly-endearing characters, and to stay with such incredible hosts in their house so close to breathtaking natural beauty. I will miss the views, company and homely atmosphere, and wish I could have stayed longer.
