Hello! My name is Jacob and I am 23 years old. Last year, I obtained my Bachelors degree in Kinesiology at Western Washington University, but given I am unsure of what I want to do in the future, I hope to utilize Workaway to explore the world, meet a diversity of people, discover new cultures, and dip my feet into various work experiences. For the last five months I have been utilizing Workaway in central Asia, Europe, and most recently Tanzania. From November to mid December I will be in Japan, and then I head off to New Zealand for an extended period of time.

I have a deep passion for almost anything outdoors, including hiking, mountain biking, running, snowboarding, soccer, and tennis. I also enjoy playing guitar, videography, and following professional sports. I would consider myself an introverted but eager individual who is detail-oriented, hardworking, and always willing to learn.

As a native English speaker who graduated from university last year, and having grown up with a father who teaches English to refugees, I have great interest and some experience in teaching English to foreigners. I have done two workaways teaching English abroad (Tanzania and Uzbekistan), and have interest in getting my CELTA certificate in the future. Additionally, I have worked some construction, painting, and most recently golf course jobs in the past, though mostly as a spare set of hands. I love arduous work, challenging myself physically, and I am hard working and thorough. Any jobs involving maintenance, construction, destruction, yardwork, or farming are jobs I am up for.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Helping to teach and coach ...)

What an incredible experience! Though I was a bit nervous traveling to Tanzania for the first time, Weza, his family, and everyone involved, welcomed me with open arms, and my two month stay in Arusha flew by.

Weza’s accommodation in Arusha was lovely. The room for workawayers was comfortable and clean, complete with two bunk beds and a double… read more bed (in three separate rooms), a bathroom, and a lovely common area. There were times throughout my stay when up to four volunteers were residing in the Workawayer apartment, but it never felt overly crowded or uncomfortable.

In terms of the work with Weza, I worked mostly at the school for a few hours in the morning and then helped out at the football academy’s training sessions in the afternoons. One nice thing is that it is made up of multiple programs, and volunteers are often able to choose what area they might want to work within based on their interests. In my experience Weza was always willing to listen to volunteer input, and was good about delegating work to volunteers that involved their passions or skill set. I found this very valuable.

On weekends, us volunteers were left plenty of time to explore Arusha and Tanzania. Weza was good about ensuring volunteers get some time to relax, and was often keen to drive and join in on local excursions to places like Chemka Hot Springs or Napuru Waterfalls. Furthermore, he was very willing to help organize Safari trips or excursions to places like Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar. During my two month stay, I had the opportunity to see some incredible places in Tanzania despite my commitments, and that was largely due to Weza’s adaptability and eagerness to share his home country’s beauty with workawayers.

Overall this workaway was a fantastic experience. It was culturally enriching and immersive, the work was gratifying, accommodation comfortable, and people wonderful. I left Arusha with not only memories for life, but friends for life in both the volunteers I lived with and the people I met here.

I am extremely grateful to have participated in this Workaway for an extended period of time, and would wholeheartedly recommend it to any volunteer on this site.

To Weza, Mama D (and Baby D), Abou, Ally, all the teachers, and the lovely kids enrolled here, asante sana for your kindness and hospitality. I hope to see you all again soon.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Looking for construction and ...)

What a phenomenal experience! Ryan and Corina are wonderful people who are very willing to share their Carribean lifestyle with any workawayer they host. I stayed on St. Croix for two months, from mid-April until mid-June, which felt like a great time frame to travel. I had enough time to experience various parts of the island, get to know other workawayers, and get scuba certified, which is something I would highly recommend. My first-time travel nerves melted away almost the moment I got off the plane thanks to the hospitality of Ryan, Corina, and the workawayers they were hosting. The accommodation is lovely no matter where you stay on the property, which boasts sweeping views of the West coast of the island and Butler Bay from nearly any point. All of the food is vegan, and I can assure you all of the food is tasty. I had never followed a vegan diet prior to my arrival on the island, and to this day I cannot remember eating a bad meal.

Expect to work from seven until noon every weekday performing all kinds of tasks from landscaping, tree planting, painting, sanding, watering, cooking, cleaning, and general construction and destruction. On weekdays after work, everyone eats a big lunch together and then is free for the remainder of the day. Though the work is a bit strenuous on occasion, it is very rewarding and allows you to learn a variety of relevant life skills. It additionally leaves you with more than enough time to get out and explore on weekday afternoons and weekends.

As I mentioned before, I would highly recommend getting scuba certified while on St. Croix, as the underwater wildlife is unbelievable and scuba diving just allows you to see things that you wouldn’t ordinarily be able to see, even with a snorkel. That is not to say that the St. Croix snorkel scene is bad, because it is quite the opposite. I was able to snorkel during the day and night at both Butler Bay and the Frederiksted Pier, and was amazed to see turtles in abundance, tarpon, octopus, squid, and fish boasting colors which I didn’t think were on the spectrum. Aside from these activities, I have fond memories of exploring the island via rental car with other workawayers, hiking, biking, kayaking, travelling to the stunning Buck Island, the botanical gardens, playing frisbee, volleyball, and attending book talks, dance parties, farmers markets, and so much more.

I feel extremely grateful to have stayed with Ryan and Corina for the amount of time that I did, and would wholeheartedly recommend it to any workawayer with any level of travel experience.
