I am a Catalan boy from Barcelona. I am 31 years old and I have travelled through most of Asia
a continent that has truly captivated my attention.

I can speak in a native way Catalan, English, French and Spanish, as well as Chinese and Indonesian. I adore sports and the sea, I had great times enjoying windsurf. I have experience in teaching both languages as well as mathematics/economics. I used workaway in the past and had a truly amazing experience in Nepal. I consider myself a friendly person, open-minded and easy going. As long as we are honest, all is fine for me :). Learning other cultures is one of my passions, as reading. I enjoy meeting new people and sharing experiences!

I've been lucky on languages as I was educated in a different culture, the french one, than my home country, Spain. That's why I love so much learning new languages. I started with Chinese language several years ago, it is really interesting, but sometimes really hard. I also love teaching maths, as well as practicing sports. I am really into football. I love sharing new experiences and discovering new places and most importantly making new friends :)

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Join our NGO and help with ...)

I spent a month in this project, and honestly what an experience it was!
I can admit it was very intense, every day being full of smiles and surprises. While at the beginning my plan was to teach (i) English and (ii) football to secondary students, as I have experience working with such age group and I feel comfortable with them, the fact that… read more secondary students did not come for classes after lunch made it impossible to pursue English classes.

So together with Paul we decided to focus on football training. Every day we would have training with the boys, ranging from 14 years old (the youngest) onwards. Discipline, respect, and organization are some of the key values I tried to transmit during this month. To be honest it has been hard, as many of the players lack family support and discipline and time keeping is really not in their culture. Nonetheless, with the help of some players that did really want to improve (Edie, Ben, Emma, Joshua), we managed to get a nice team who played fairly, with respect and with good tactics. I am extremely proud to see how much they have improved and feel like the start has been given. I wish I could go back soon and continue with the coaching.

Overall, the experience was extremely rewarding for several reasons:

1) I was very fulfilled with the football training, and helped me to interact really closely with locals, and get to know their lifestyle and thinking. Football did really provide a way to close the cultural gap.
2) The smiles of local people. Ugandans are extremely welcoming, and they are very excited to see foreigners (called "muzungus)". I felt always welcomed and was really happy to get to know the families of some of the players and of some of the kids of the project.
3) The volunteer house is nice, clean and spacious. Jovia is the lady that works in the house and trust me, while you are there she will be like your mum, taking care of you, asking if you enjoyed the food, and everything. She is extremely nice and having that comfort in the house was really helpful in recharging energy for the project :)
4) I organized a fundraising to purchase clothes for the kids, as many wear the same ones for many days, and are dirty, broken, etc. We raised a fair amount of money and managed to give clothes to 110 kids!!!! Thank Emma, Fred, and Davis (aka Kalule) for your support, it would not have happened without your help!!!

As things to improve, although they are minor, I would suggest:
1) Even though it will always happen because of cultural difference, try to avoid miscommunication by being as clear and concise as possible, specially related to food ;) But that of course is something that needs to be practiced by both the project and the volunteers!

Overall, I highly recommend this experience and project as Paul has the experience to run it, and will make sure you enjoy it and can contribute to the community. Nabugalo has a lot of struggles and any help will be greatly welcomed, in exchange you can expect a lot of smiles and a lot of affection from local people.
