Hi,
I’m Finn, 18 years old and from a village in southwestern Germany. I graduated Highschool last year and have arrived in Canada in May, to do a gap year in Canada, to gain some work/life experience, improve my english skills, see the beautiful landscape of Canada, meet new people and get to know new cultures. After I graduated I worked as a waiter and cashier to earn some money for my journey to Canada. I arrived in May and used my first month here to travel around and get to know Canada and it’s people a little better. Until now, I have visited Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria and did an 8 day hike called the west coast trail. I have to say that I am overwhelmed by both the nature with it’s mountains, forests, unique wildlife and vegetation and the friendliness and openness of the people I meet.
At the moment I am working at a Ranch in Horsefly BC, also over workaway. And enjoy the beautiful landscape and the feeling of falling into bed after a day full of woodchopping, fence building or cattle chasing.
Work where you can see your progress is motivating for me, and since I enjoy working out, I also enjoy physical labor. I’m a team player, so working in a team, where everybody brings in his own skills and spirit fulfills me. Furthermore I like the idea of working in an somewhat family like environment, in which one has a more private approach to his/her coworkers and hosts.
I enjoy spending time outside and in my free time I do a lot of sports (soccer, jogging, gym), I also enjoy hiking and reading, especially classical or historical books. I think that I‘m a pretty down-to-earth type of guy and believe in hard work, so discipline is important to me. Generally I am very interested in experiencing new things, no matter if just food or general life attitude and I have an open approach to everything. I have a good sense of humor and enjoy a good laugh.

I graduated from school last year and I want to study at a university after my gap year. In school I was especially interested in Chemistry in this subject, I also won the school award for chemistry in my graduation year. I speak German and English fluently and can speak some Swedish. I am also able to understand a little bit of french. I worked as a waiter cashier for six months and in addition to that as a cashier for three months.I also did some „handyman“ things like building a chicken house or doing a renovation of an old wooden house (changing front-boards, painting, paperhanging, etc.). Playing a team sport taught me to be a team player and also discipline to work on myself. My uncle is a farmer of a ecological school farm, so I also know a little bit about how farm life is like. Last year I learned how to drive and I have now a drivers license.
In my now nearly two months on the Ranch I learned so much I can’t put everything down. But in general how Ranch live works, how to act independently and help yourself. My everyday chores are often to move the cows or sheep, give them new pieces of land, trail maintenance (cutting down trees, fixing fences), feeding the pigs or helping out in the garden. I also learned how to drive an excavator, dumptruck, bobcat, little tractors and my favorite off all a little Kawasaki ATV, which is a lifesaver on such a big Ranch (1800 acres).

Vom Workawayer (Finn) für Host (Help around the ranch and the ...)

I stayed at big bear ranch for two and a half month (tho initially intended to stay only for six weeks), and I loved loved loved it there. From the beginning on felt welcomed and as part of the family, and never at once left out. Let me promise you that you’ll never get bored at BBR, as there is always something to do on the Ranch, like chasing… read more cows, repairing fences and above all driving DIE Kawasaki, the best four wheeler there ever was. As somebody with practically no experience in agriculture and obviously none at all with operating the needed machinery, I was absolutely overwhelmed with the amount of trust, that Flo and Rainer had in me: I learned how to drive Traktors, how to operate an rake, excavator, bobcat and many more. Meanwhile without the feeling of being pushed to anything, I felt uncomfortable with.
Consti anf Finni have more energy together than a herd of wild bisons, but even though they can be overwhelming at first, they are wonderful sensible and considerate children, that you have to fall for. I already miss building sandcastles with them, playing Zombie (strangely I always was the Zombie) or reading Tim and Struppi with them.
Although Flo and Steffi work both way to much, they both do a huge effort to do funny and exiting trips with the workaways and children, like hiking, going to festivals, concerts or just tubing down the river (favorite thing to do!) and many more. You would never believe how much Horsefly has to offer, when you have them around as your tour guides.
I had my own cozy cabin during my stay, with an own wood stove, which was a perfect fit for me. There is nothing like looking out of the window and see the sunrise from there, and absolutely nothing is comparable to the night sky (watch out for northern lights). The food was another highlight of my stay: Steffi bakes her own bread and most of the vegetables come straight from their garden and taste absolutely gorgeous. The meat comes soly from the Ranch and I honestly never tasted anything like that in my live. Dinner is always eaten together and it was always a feast, which was accompanied by good talks and of course great performances by the boys showing off their new skills on the mountain bike, and often followed by the best game of all: lobster.

I want to thank y’all again for making this summer unforgettable and full of great memories and experiences for me. I will miss cuddling with Seppi, rumbling with the boys and screaming „come on girls“ from the top of my lungs, so much. I would love to return and wish you all the best in the world!

Nothing but good things to say about this young fella as he became family really quickly. We had to wave him goodbye today as he is off to new adventures and we wish him only the best of a time exploring other areas of this country.
