My name is Cameron Reid, I am an 18 year old from the UK on a Gap year after completing my A levels. I am attending Veterinary School at Nottingham University next year. I love being outside and getting stuck in. I enjoy meeting new people and making friends aswell as learning about different culture and ways of life. I'm sporty and work well in a team. I also play the drums and am fond of connecting with people through different tastes in music. I have a passion for animals and animal welfare.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Conservation eco-sanctuary in ...)

WOW, just WOW!
I stayed with Mish and Nige for 5 full days at the start of March, and I couldn't have felt more welcome. From the moment Mish picked us up in the minivan with a huge, beaming smile on her face to when we were dropped back off 5 days later, Mish and Nige showed nothing but care and kindness. They provided generous hospitality and a… read more warm, homely atmosphere — a true breath of fresh air after traveling in hostels for so long.

Both Nige and Mish are incredibly passionate about the various projects they have going on, as well as their overall vision. They are very eager to share their knowledge and encourage you to ask questions to fully understand the reasons behind their efforts. I learned so much about New Zealand during my time there, and it’s been fantastic being able to build on that knowledge and educate others about the importance of conservation in NZ.

We worked hard from 9 am to 2:30 pm each day, taking on a variety of tasks that all contributed to their broader goal. Mish focuses on the horticultural side and has a vast knowledge of New Zealand flora, while Nige handles the animal-related work, such as laying trap lines and hunting. Together, they’re making incredible progress in restoring their land to its former natural state. However, they also emphasized the importance of downtime, encouraging us to explore and unwind. During our leisure time, we explored their stunning land, swam in natural river swimming holes, and visited some of Picton’s local beaches.

I have a couple of complicated food allergies, but Mish had no problem catering for me. The food was absolutely delicious. We enjoyed proper, home-cooked, nutritious meals, which was a real privilege. A personal highlight for me was the wraps Mish made every day for our lunch break, filled with pumpkin, any leftover curries from the night before, and fresh vegetables. Now, I had never gone that long without eating meat before coming to this Workaway, and I can honestly say I didn’t miss meat once. As Nige would say, it was some pretty good tucker!

The bed was also extremely comfy, and the facilities were excellent. I should probably also mention that they have the most adorable working dog, Ash, who is always up for a cuddle.

I honestly feel like I left Waikawa a different person.

Overall, there aren’t enough stars to give for how amazing this week was. Thank you so much I wish you both all the best with your future conservation efforts, and if I ever return to New Zealand, I would love to visit and see the progress they’ve made.
