Hi! My name is Bas Tuinman. I am 29 years old and I live in the north of The Netherlands. I have a bachelor in Human Resource Management and this summer I completed my masters in change management with a specialty in sustainability management. I also work as a caregiver but I am at my happiest when I am outside in nature. I absolutely love the outdoors to explore new areas! I love camping, hiking, scuba diving and in any way being in contact with nature and wild life! During my studies I lived in Cape Town for 6 months where I did an internship on the Wine Farms of Stellenbosch and fell in love with this part of the world. Between my bachelor and my masters I traveled the world for about 15 months during which I lived and worked on a farm in Australia for 3 months. I am so excited to go traveling again, to meet new people and gain new insights and experiences that I know can change your life forever. I consider myself to be calm, easygoing and a hard worker. I hope that I can give back to my host and help out in any way I can :)

At the moment I am based in BC and are working on a farm. I am open to new (paid) work late summer up north or short term projects during spring/summer in BC). Please let me know if you are interested!

Was könntest du arbeiten?

I have been doing gardening, wood chopping, painting and some general maintenance and basic building for several years during my studies. I mostly did this for family and friends. For example, we took down a large tree at my parents place this summer and sawed and chopped the whole thing ourselves. I also attend to several peoples garden for many years and have been doing summer painting projects since I was about 16 years old.

Furthermore, I have worked on a farm in Australia for three months. We had a dog Oaky (a Kelpie), about 30 cows, 2 horses and about 10 chickens. I did several chores, like fencing, feeding the cows, building & maintenance and weed spraying. Additionally, we would host a big group of backpacker guests every couple of days. I would take the group to the river and guide them on the tubes after which we would cook for everyone and serve drinks. Other work included cleaning the rooms, make up the beds and general admin work like checking in the guests and handling payments.

Recently I worked at a large cattle ranch in BC during calving season. Farm chores included: feeding animals, cleaning pens, buikding and repairing fences (wood & wire), gardening, clearing with chainsaw, building and carpentry projects. At the moment I work at a smaller hobby farm where I also do fencing, gardening, building and carpentry, and taking care of all the animals.

I also work as a caregiver for my grand parents who suffer from dementia. My uncle has been living with them for almost three years to take care of them. When he is away for some time off, I jump in to take care of my grand parents. My uncle has a dog, his name is Timmo. We always go for lots of walks together. Unfortunately, he is not very good with strangers (dogs or people) because of a traumatic past... Luckily, after I gained his trust he and I have become best friends!

Overall, I consider myself to be easygoing, calm, social, and a hard worker who is ready to learn new skills and new experiences. I have a "can do" attitude and I am not afraid to get my hands dirty. And not to forget, I love to cook so always willing to cook local food or food I learned to cook abroad like my favorite: north Indian curries!

Was noch ...

I love traveling, being outdoors to go camping, hiking, diving and exploring. I am open to some great new experiences and hope that I can give back in any way I can. I am very motivated to help out the people who are kind enough to host me and hope that I can be a fun and hard working workawayer :)
