Fabien stayed with us for a week and quickly became a part of the rhythm here. He is respectful, reliable, and wonderfully self-directed — always smiling and bringing good energy to both work and group life. He helped with heavy lifting as well as the small, everyday tasks that keep the house cared for, and he did it all with ease and cheer. There is something special and pleasant about being around him, and we found ourselves wishing he could stay longer to share more time and stories. We’re so happy he came to our home in the middle of his great journey, and we send him off with our best wishes — hoping our paths will cross again someday!

Kirsten was a fantastic volunteer. Nothing too much trouble. What she didn't know, she learnt. Good company. Great around the house. An asset to any host.

Spending a week with Mayu, Masaki and their wonderful children was an experience I will never forget. They literally opened their doors to me, making me feel at home. The children are are funny and amazing and I miss them already. We had wonderful conversations about a lot of topics, always curious about each other's cultures, and they helped me discover a new part of this country. If you want to spend a wonderful week completely immersed in the family atmosphere of these people, I highly recommend it. Thank you for welcoming me and making me feel at home.

My stay with Mercedes and Andrew was a truly wonderful experience. From the moment I arrived, they welcomed me warmly and made me feel at home right away. I genuinely enjoyed the work whether it was yard projects or learning about the ins and outs of American home life, everything felt new and interesting. On top of that, I even got the chance to learn some cooking, which was completely new to me, and it meant a lot to be able to share a Korean meal with them on my last day. Their love and passion for music also left a big impression on me. As someone who loves music myself, it was inspiring and brought me a lot of joy. Above all, I’m so grateful for the way they included me in their family-like moments so naturally and with such kindness. I’ll carry these memories with me throughout my journey, and I truly hope our paths will cross again someday.

I stayed at Hiro’s house for one week, and it was a wonderful experience. It was my first Workaway, and I was a bit nervous, but Hiro was very kind and made me feel comfortable from the start. Thanks to her, I could enjoy the real life of Southern California, not just sightseeing. She took me out for drinks, to a sports bar to cheer for the Dodgers, and even showed me how to play pickleball. It was so much fun. Most of my work was in the garden. Since I had never lived in a house with a garden, it was very new and interesting for me. After work, swimming in the pool was the best feeling, and I felt like I experienced a part of American life. I also enjoyed our talks about work and life. It gave me new ideas for my future, and I really respect Hiro’s active lifestyle. Thank you so much, Hiro. This week became a very special memory for me, and I hope to come back to see you again someday.

My husband and I had the most wonderful stay with Sara and Daryl at the farm, I would recommend it to anyone (everyone!). Their home, and the entire Common Ground site, is incredibly beautiful and peaceful. They take the cultural exchange part of WorkAway seriously, and we had many lovely, enriching conversations during meals, on walks through the forest, out in the garden, and while feeding the ducks. I feel like I learned as much about myself and my spirituality as I did about permaculture and living sustainably in community. One of the highlights was helping Daryl and the volunteer crew he brought together salvage solar panels from a site in Birmingham and learning how to do the "solar dance." So so glad we chose to come to Alabama--there's so much to explore, we want to go back!

Had a wonderful and very chill stay at Ollie's for just over one week. The work is not especially rigorous, and feels enriching, beneficial, and worthwhile, like you're giving back to the land. It's a beautiful and huge property you will have a lot of time to explore. Ollie is a delight; very intelligent and great to talk with. Absolutely recommend a stay here.

Had a great time in the bush with Simon and Julia 🌻 Simon put a group together and we all met in Byron and set off indland to his brilliant property in the forest. The views and the space is unparalleled, as is the food (Simon is an excellent chef). I learnt so many new skills while I was here.. How to use a chainsaw, drive an excavator, and pretty much build a house 🥳. In our freetime, we would go to swim in waterfalls, have movie nights, play board games, and just sit and chat with a few(..) beers. Thank you so much to Simon and Julia for this experience xx

Enjoyed my stay with Krystal who is a pleasant soul with an ultra kind heart. She has done an admirable job of being both independent and outgoing. You must ask her to take you to Wendy's house for drumming activities. Her house is beautiful in the mountains of jaco as well. Would love to visit in the future 🙏

Lisa, you are someone we truly like because you’ve helped us with such willingness and dedication. With many of the tasks we have, I didn’t have to keep an eye on you or supervise at all. Just by asking you to help with something, I could already trust that the outcome would be satisfying. We’d really love for you to come back again if there’s a chance. You stayed with us far too briefly — it was such a wonderful time meeting you, Lisa.

Andrea was a helpful addition to our team. She was consistent and always ready and willing to tackle any tasks assigned. She helped take care of the animals and especially attentive to the chickens. She helped with a number of projects on the farm, landscaping and brush cutting, cooking, and various tasks around the house as-needed which we were most grateful. Andrea is positive and upbeat and seems to get along well with others. She can defiantly be a help to any home or farm.

Hi. Maho. So sorry for the late reply. I through I had done it. Bit bloody slack of me ah. Well what can I say, could say quite a bit but it would take me all day lol. Maho was lovely to have here. She just filled into the routine round here like a glove. Dottie loved her to bits. We did the usual gardening stuff round the section. We had Kiwi English lessons lol. Went for walks and a bit of house cleaning. She was polite and tidy round the house. Would enjoy having you stay again if your ever back in NZ. Thank you very much for all your help.

I am delighted to share my thoughts on Bara, a remarkable volunteer teacher at our Foreign Language School in rural Cambodia. Her dedication to teaching English to the village students has been nothing short of inspiring. From the moment Bara stepped into the classroom, it was evident that she possesses a genuine passion for education. Her teaching style is both engaging and effective, making learning a fun and interactive experience. Bara employs creative methods to explain complex concepts, ensuring that every student, regardless of their initial skill level, feels included and encouraged. Bara’s ability to connect with her students is truly special. She takes the time to understand their individual needs, fostering a supportive environment where they feel safe to express themselves. Her patience and enthusiasm motivate the students to participate actively, and it’s heartwarming to witness their progress over time. Moreover, Bara goes beyond the curriculum. She introduces cultural elements that enrich her students' understanding of the English language, helping them see its relevance in a global context. Her commitment to fostering a love for learning is evident, and her impact on the students' lives is profound. In summary, Bara is an extraordinary volunteer teacher whose contributions to the New school are invaluable. Her passion, creativity, and dedication not only enhance the educational experience for her students but also empower them to dream big and aspire for a brighter future. I wholeheartedly recommend Bara for any teaching role, as she continues to make a difference in the lives of the children she serves.

I loved my time at la cruz! I extended my stay because it becomes like a home. It's amazing to see the positive work being done with the animals and the community and it feels so special to be a part of it. The staff and volunteers are welcoming and the shifts are well organised and fair. It feels like a safe space if you have any concerns or questions. Living without electricity and internet becomes the norm and it became really refreshing to be off the phone. I think living in this way encourages more connection with others and the surroundings. The town isn't too far away when you want signal again and there's a nice place volunteers can access where you can spend time and have a swim. It's such a unique experience it feels so special being surrounded by the jungle and seeing the progress of the monkeys is so rewarding, I'll miss them so much.

Thank you so much to ULA for the warm hospitality. Everyone here was incredibly kind and welcoming, making me feel right at home. The vegetarian meals were delicious and plentiful every day. Most importantly, working here taught me a different perspective on intention. Even something as simple as mopping the floor can transform when done with the mindset of benefiting others—it completely changes your energy. This journey is one I’ll cherish and reflect on for a lifetime :)

Had my first Workaway experience with Amanda. Even though it was a short stay I couldn’t ask for a better experience. The place is peaceful and surrounded by nature, and it’s a good location to explore the close by beaches. The tasks are fair and the place to stay is very comfortable and private. I would recommend to everybody. Thanks Amanda for hosting me!

It was a real pleasure having Ana with us for a while! She is smart, understands everything quickly and is very independent. She integrated super easily with the other volunteers that were already here and helped create a great environment both for the guests and the team.

We had the privilege of hosting Johanna at our new facility in Guu for three weeks, and honestly, it was such a wonderful experience. She’s kind, positive, easy-going, and just the type of volunteer anyone would be lucky to have around. She came at a time when most of our girls were in school, with only three older girls and their kids at home, but she immediately jumped in and made herself super useful. She spent time teaching Vivian (who’s waiting to join school next year) Mathematics, CRE, and English. She also stepped up big time when we received a lost-and-found child from the Department of Children Services. She handled the case with the Children’s Office on her own, with so much professionalism and care. Johanna also embraced our sports program with so much energy. Not only did she support the kids in soccer training, but she even bought equipment for badminton and volleyball, and helped supervise the daily training sessions at the facility. Thanks to her, I even got to visit Decathlon for the first time 😂. And as if that wasn’t enough, she noticed how much laundry was taking up the girls’ time, and decided to buy us a huge washing machine so the girls could focus more on their studies. It’s still new to us 😅, but it’s already a blessing and will definitely serve its purpose in the long run. She fit in so easily with both the staff and the girls. Whether it was cheering the Kenyan team at the stadium, taking the girls out for fun, or just being there for them every day, she always had their happiness at heart. That’s something really special about her. The girls also loved her cooking especially her spaghetti, which became such a hit that some would sneak out in the night just to grab extra plates 😂. And she was so sweet with the little ones, Baby Gift (our “crying hero” 😅) and Baby Cecilia, caring for them with so much patience and love. Johanna is flexible, hardworking, fun, and incredibly friendly. She won hearts not only in our home but even in town.Everyone wanted to be her friend. Hosting her wasn’t just about having a volunteer, we gaining a real sister and friend. We are so grateful for the time we had together, and we already miss her a lot. Even the community keeps asking, “Where is our mzungu?” 😅. Johanna, you’ll always have a family here in Oyugis. We wish you all the best back home and can’t wait to see you again. Highly, highly recommended to any host, you’ll be very lucky to have her!
