Beschreibung
We hope to create a self sufficient eco project farm that grows food for our family and friends. We have started with bees, a few chickens, Guinea fowls and ducks and hope to add Goats and lots of plants and we have two dogs
The farm is based in the Toowoomba Ranges 1.5hours from Brisbane.
Accommodation is in a 3-bedroom off-grid Queensland cottage with 2 bathrooms and a kitchen.

The farm is 30 minutes from Toowomba and 1.5 hours from Brisbane. We may be able to offer a day or two in brisbane at the beginning and end of your stay at the farm.
The farm is very peaceful with places for hiking and bouldering

Your own vehicle is preferable however we can organise hire of a vehicle for your stay in lieu of providing food.

Sometimes you will be on your own on the farm and other times we will be there with other workaways and/or our family and friends.

I have stayed for 2 weeks there with great friends, cute dogs and chickens.
There are huge yard, fire pit, trampoline and various plants.
My mission was fixed fence and get some water to some plants.
In the night, I could see the beautiful stars. Sometimes I did the BBQ in the fire pit.
Everything was amazing and valuable experience.

I stayed at Mickey and Steve's farm for 2.5 weeks in June and it was a great experience that I would recommend to everyone! The house is literally in the middle of nowhere, which makes it a genuine off-grid experience where I could enjoy the tranquility, beautiful nature, and a totally different experience overall having come from a very busy… read more cosmopolitan city. My stay taught me to appreciate the finiteness of resources (power and water), and gave me a lovely taste of the simple country life that I had been looking for.

- The hosts: As Mickey and Steve work full time in Brisbane (their home in Brisbane has a separate workaway profile), they are not in this property during the week and only came over on the weekends during my stay. Fortunately, I spent most of my stay with 2 other workawayers with whom I have become great friends with - we tackled all the tasks and learnt new skills together. This meant that we could do as much or as little as we wanted everyday, and took breaks or days off as often as we wanted, as long as the tasks were completed within the week. Both hosts reply very quickly over Whatsapp so it was easy to communicate any issues or questions that we had or to clarify any tasks or plans. Mickey was my main point of contact and she is really nice, gentle and interesting - she has accomplished a lot in her life and it was nice to learn about her and the family through our conversations (albeit not many). Steve is also chatty and generous and cracks dad jokes every now and then. They even accommodated us in their Brisbane home for 2 nights after our farmstay before we moved on to our next plans, and we got to meet the whole family (4 kids), who are all really polite and nice people, so we were very grateful!

- The property: There are 3 bedrooms (4th on the way) so each of us workawayers had our own room. It does get quite cold at night, to which we learnt to make fires in the fireplace and Mickey made sure I had more than enough clothes and blankets to stay warm. There are also relaxing and beautiful walks around the huge 100 acre+ property (we saw a water dragon on one of the walks), and an absolutely amazing night sky where you can see the milky way with your bare eyes (I didn't even see this down in Tassie!) There is no wifi though, and I get spotty reception on Optus in different spots of the house - which is fine considering this is an off-grid experience after all!

- The work: The tasks were not difficult ones at all and left me feeling I could have done more in return for Mickey and Steve's generosity - for the first week, it was a light workload with some general tidying, painting of some doors/walls, looking after the dogs/poultry, and some miscellaneous tasks. We even took a day off on a Thursday to go to a nearby lake recommended by Mickey, which was pristine and enjoyable. We spent the whole second week establishing their permaculture garden, which was a lot more of manual labour - hope this turns out well in the end! On the first weekend, Mickey and Steve brought a whole other workaway family to the property and we all did gardening, bushwalks, BBQs and harvested raw honey straight from the hives together - it was very lively, fun and social, and I may or may not have had too much honey when we did the harvesting! On the second weekend, Steve brought another workawayer over and we again had a BBQ and a bushwalk - it was great to have met a lot of people from all over.

- Food: Mickey stocked the fridge every weekend with a lot of food and even generously asked us what we wanted in particular. They open fire BBQs were also really cool and delicious experiences. I ended up spending a lot of my time throughout the week cooking and baking and it was great.

- Transport: As the property is in the middle of the mountains, the nearest shop/town is 30min away by car and Brisbane is almost 2h away by car, so I had to match up Mickey's visit to the farm to join her drive there, and Steve drove us back to Brisbane when it was time for us to leave. One of the workawayers drove (Mickey kindly lent her car), and even drove to pick the other one up from the nearest town, which is the reason how we managed to get our day off to the nearby lake.

All in all, even though I had not planned to come to this workaway (as I first enquired about their Brisbane home), I'm so glad to have had this experience and would urge everyone to try this kind of peaceful off-grid living at least once in their life!
