Vom Workawayer (Ella) für Host
I really enjoyed living with Ascen and her son, they welcomed me right from the beginning. Ascen was very helpful in getting me settled in in Madrid, and was open to discussions around the best ways to set boundaries with her son. I remember the first weekend feeling lost and they took me to have tapas with other family members, which made me feel

I have thoroughly enjoyed helping her son to learn English through talking and correcting in English, singing in English and through reading/written exercises. I also enjoyed playing many games with him and helping him to practise piano. I always felt supported with the learning by Ascen and that I could always ask her if I wasn't sure about something.
The schedule was very manageable and well planned/communicated in advance. Ascen was also very receptive to being flexible if I needed to slightly adjust my hours.
It was possible for me to take Spanish classes every day in the morning, which I could walk to and balance this with my time looking after her son. Also, I was able to spend a lot of time exploring Madrid as each night I was free to do whatever I wanted to do. The house is in a very central location, close to Retiro park, close to lots of Spanish schools, close to the metro and easy to get to the centre.
Ascen provided me with a comfortable room and delicious food. Many nights during the week, we would all sit down and have dinner together. During dinner we would often make up stories in English.
Ascen's calm but stern approach as a mother was extremely helpful in us working together as team with her son. They also invited me to their village to meet their family members, which was lovely.
My favourite part of my time with Ascen and her son in Madrid was teaching songs to her son and singing them together. Sometimes we also made up songs. He is very musical and hearing his ability grow and blossom over the three months was wonderful.

Ella is a wonderful and sparkling girl, who has been taking care of my son from the start of September to the end of November 2024. There are many things I'm thankful to her for. Ella, thanks for your kindness and for being so responsible, your songs and music, funny stories, teaching English to my son and correcting his mistakes.

… read more make my child respect her and obey her as she was always in control of the situation, teaching him good behaviour. She devised a behaviour system (similar to that of my son's school), which laid out boundaries and helped him to stick to them.
My son enjoyed learning lots of new songs in English with Ella, practising them and performing them to me. They played piano together and created music. They played lots of different games, many of which Ella created to help my son with his English.
Ella was never afraid to get stuck in, whether it was playing intense football games with my son, building towers for hours, or drawing and colouring character masks. Ella also started to help my son to recognise his emotions and to reflect on his behaviour and why he might have behaved in certain ways.
Apart from fulfilling her duties, she had the time and ability to discover and enjoy the city as she is very "alive".
Ella, you know you are part of my family now, and you are/will be welcome whenever you want to come back.

Chaia has been with my family during May+June 2024 and all I can say is that she is a wonderful young lady.
Some points that I appreciate are:

The only thing I may regret is that she needs to come back to UK (as we knew from the beginning), such is life!!. But she knows my door is open.

This has been my first work away experience and it has definitely been unforgettable for the memories I’ve created and the things I have learned about Spanish life and culture in the past 7 weeks.
Ascensión and her son have welcomed me in to their family from the start and have done everything possible to help me adapt to a new culture.
The son (5
… read more years old) is an energetic boy who is a fast learner and loves to draw, play and run around. He has a good grasp of English and you need to keep up with him as he is very active and needs to be engaged with.
My main duties were babysitting whilst teaching English to the son through books, games and other activities and some light housework. I also helped with teaching the son piano as he has recently started learning to play.
I really appreciated the flexible schedule and how I could have privacy when needed, which left plenty of time to explore and enjoy the city or spend time with the family if I chose.

This has been my first workaway experience and it was better than I could have imagined.
Ascen and her son have been some of the kindest and most generous people I've ever met and I feel very fortunate to have been able to spend the last 2 and a half months with them.
They really let me into their lives and I felt a real part of their family

About the mother, she is a really good woman, always cared about how I was and how I felt and included me in their daily activities...even trips and family meetings ♥️
The son (5 years old) is a lively little boy who loves to draw and play outside. The boy has a lot of energy so you have to keep up with him. I enjoyed reading english tales for him and teaching him english. We painted a lot and make so many masks of his favourite characters in the afternoons. If you love kids and are patient you will adore eachother.
I had a lot of free time and could do whatever I felt like.
As I didn't speak Spanish at all, the family made a lot of effort to speak to me in English, even though they're more at ease in Spanish, and I'm enormously grateful for that.
For them it is important to speak always in English and they appreciate to have the flat clean and tidy.
We respected each other privacy and enjoyed the times we spent together. We were very flexible about the timetables and adapted it acording to our mutual needs.
The family took me to visit their grandparents for several days in a small village in Burgos and we also visited Zaragoza for a long weekend, and shared Spanish gastronomy with me (incredible by the way). I never felt "employed" but like a big sister in this family.
To anyone who might still be hesitant about staying with this family, just go! you'll create good memories.

Miguel and I have been very happy and he has learned a lot of English with her. He has also done lots of drawing, reading and playing with Brianna! Brianna is very creative and artistic so one of Miguel and her favourite things to do was to make masks of Miguel’s favourite characters from films or books! Brianna also helped out a lot with cooking and cleaning and general upkeep of the house which I really appreciated!
I consider Brianna a friend for life and would have her back anytime! We hope you have enjoyed your stay with us as much as we have.
