You will have the opportunity to participate to several projects :
- The permaculture family/experimental farm :
This is the family farm of 3/4 acre, which integrates different types of vegetables, animals (cows, rabbits, chickens, bees), fruit trees, nursery, greenhouse and the family house.
This is the place you will spend most of the time and share the daily tasks with the family.
Several objectives with this place : to produce food in order to allow the family to be food self-sufficient and to show local people the advantages of following permaculture principles and concepts (in regard to health, environment and income generation).
- Practical Permaculture Community of Southern Highlands :
Currently this is a big wild land, full of trees and natural resources! The site structure is still in its early stage (we already have 12 beehives, 80 avocado trees, flowers, and the foundations of the future reception of the site and all the plans of the different buildings we will have are already drawn and ready to be followed!), but once developed enough, we will be able to receive students and people interested in permaculture from around the globe, to demonstrate the positive effects of permaculture and educate individuals on the practices of sustainable living following the key concepts of practical permaculture.
In Tanzania - and I can say that this is also global – farmers and even people in general do not realize that the conventional farming practices are killing our lands and destroying natural ecosystems and biodiversity. Unlike these money focused conventional farmers, my wish is to first create awareness on a local scale and then hopefully progress to educate people nationally. Encouraging people to have a respectful and environmentally sustainable relationship with Mother Nature, so that the future generation may continue these practices and utilize and enjoy the rich natural resources that surround us. My aim is to educate the community so that they may realize and readjust the way which they think, produce and live. I hope to demonstrate the economical and environmental benefits of permaculture, so the local community can observe the small changes they can implement in their own lifestyles without needing to compromise important aspects of their lives.
- The Permaculture School Project :
In order to change peoples mind, the best way is to talk to kids, because they are in their learning stage and are more open to change than adults. This is why I also decided to invest some time into the secondary school of the village, in order to teach the students about permaculture and to show them the advantages of this practice versus monoculture and conventional farming using pesticides and chemicals. This project is also a way to allow the students to have access to an abundance of organic fruits and vegetables, which they now use to prepare food in the secondary school and is strong evidence of the positive impacts of permaculture.
Plastic pollution is a major problem in the secondary school and the local area. I wish to begin bringing awareness to the students about the harmful affects of plastic to the environment. I wish to begin a project in the school to produce Eco Bricks (disposed plastic bottles compressed with rubbish). Which will provide as a low cost building material (these Eco Bricks will be eventually used for the structure of the Permaculture Community buildings) and also demonstrate the different actions we can take to battle plastic pollution.
- Hostel and Permaculture Project. This project is a collaboration between myself and the Rural Development Organisation. I have created a permaculture garden on the property of the RDO Hostel. Which provides organic food for the residents of the hostel as well as demonstrating the positive effects of permaculture. Students from the RDO often come to the hostel to have a look at what is going on in the project. The hostel also provides delicious chai and chapatti or mandazi for a much needed refueling break after work. Work is often helping watering the crops, developing garden beds and planting seeds. This project is succeeding very well and is evidence of the benefits of practical permaculture.
I am happy and excited to work with different people from all over the world, who can teach me new things, share ideas and knowledge, collaborate on projects and further aid me to fulfill my goal of helping the local community and environment.

You will be sharing good time with us and experiment the tanzanian way of life!
We will be happy to spend some time with you, teaching you a little Kiswahili and local language (Hehe) and also help you discovering the area (we are close to the Ruaha National Park, the biggest one in Tanzania so if you want we can help you organize a safari during your days off) or any near adventures you wish to undertake.
Mdabulo Ikanga is a small village where everyone knows each other! The local people are all very friendly and are always willing to have a conversation with you regardless of your fluency in Kiswahili! There are often people coming into the farm to visit the family and to observe the design and benefits of practical permaculture. So there are always opportunities to meet and interact with the locals and practice your Kiswahili.
You will experience a real Tanzanian farm lifestyle. You are welcome to offer any help around the farm, for example:
- Milking the cows and selling the milk in the mornings and evenings. - Cleaning the animal pens and feeding the animals
- Picking fruits and vegetables and preparing meals for the family
- Watering the crops, preparing garden beds for new crops, planting seeds, distributing natural fertilizer, removing weeds and grass, turning compost, etc.
There is always jobs in which you can help with around the property and all help is welcomed!
Beside these daily tasks, the aim is to keep the project and dream growing so we will work on several ideas which imply designing, building, repairing.
If you have any computing skills it will also be very useful to help update documents, creating and updating some webpages (especially facebook page to show people how the project goes on…) and also to teach me some computer skills.

You will be staying at the farm, in the family house.
This is a very peaceful place with a beautiful environment. There are fruit trees across the site and most of the food will be provided by the family crops.
Bedsheets, blankets, and pillows are provided.
Depending on the number of volunteers (we can host 1 to 4 volunteers at the same time), you will have your own lockable room or share it with one other volunteer (2 simple beds per room). You will have access to the bathroom (shower with buckets of hot water) and toilets. The environment is peaceful, and you will share 3 meals per day with us (breakfast, lunch and dinner are included).
We are not so far from Ruaha National Park, the biggest park of Tanzania, so we can organize some safari for you and with a good price!
We have no Wi-Fi but you can get a good network signal if you purchase a local sim card.
The weather is very nice in Mufindi area, not too hot but it can be cold at night so it is better for you if you have some warm clothes with you 😊
I am able to help assist all travelers with their journey to Mdabulo. As I have friends in many places who are happy to help make your journey as smooth as possible. As the local transport can be quite confusing if you do not speak the local language!
Just let me know of travel plans and I will be happy to help!
Look forward to exchanging ideas with you and developing the Practical Permaculture Community of Tanzanian Southern Highlands vision. :)
