We are a small, nonprofit language and arts primary school located in a beautiful rural area of Cambodia, dedicated to providing local children with access to quality arts education. Our programs focus on empowering students through a variety of creative outlets, including dance, music, and cultural studies. We are urgently seeking volunteers with specialized skills to enrich our students’ learning experiences and help our community thrive.

    Ballet Teacher

This December will mark our third year performing The Nutcracker, and we are looking for an experienced ballet teacher to help us continue building our program and prepare our students for this very special performance.

We are looking for someone with a strong background in ballet—either an experienced teacher or a longtime, advanced ballet student—who is comfortable working with children. Our volunteer teacher will help with ballet technique and training, choreography, rehearsals, and preparation for The Nutcracker, which we perform each December for our students’ families, sponsors, and local community.

More than anything, we are looking for someone who loves ballet and wants to share that passion with children who would otherwise have very little access to this kind of training. Our students are enthusiastic, hardworking, and incredibly proud of their annual performance. We want a teacher who can help them continue developing their skills, confidence, discipline, and love of dance—and help us make our third Nutcracker our best one yet.
In return for your help, you’ll have the opportunity to be part of something truly unique—helping our girls continue moving forward in their ballet training in rural Cambodia. Your time here is about much more than teaching dance. You’ll be helping children build confidence, discipline, creativity, and skills they might otherwise never have the opportunity to develop. Every volunteer teacher becomes part of the story of this very special program and helps us keep it growing for the next generation of young dancers.

We’ve been fortunate to welcome several volunteer ballet teachers through Workaway over the past few years, and it has been an amazing experience for both our students and our volunteers. Each teacher has brought something different to the program, helped our dancers grow, and become part of the story of ballet at our school.

Global volunteers who spend their time volunteering at our school in rural Kep, Cambodia, will have a unique and rewarding experience that benefits both our students and the volunteers themselves. Here are some ways volunteers can benefit:

    1. Personal growth: Volunteers can gain valuable insights into the cultural and social context in which we operate. This, in turn, enables them to develop a level of tolerance, patience, and adaptability to different situations and circumstances.

    2. Professional Development: Volunteers can improve their leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. They will learn how to work effectively in diverse teams and become more proficient in managing challenging situations.

    3. Emotional intelligence: Working with semi-advantaged and disadvantaged children requires an immense level of emotional intelligence. Volunteers will learn how to communicate effectively with children to develop a deeper understanding of learners’ backgrounds and environments.

    4. Valuable experience: Volunteers who work with us will be exposed to different cultures, languages, and teaching methods. Such experience is an excellent addition to their resumes, making them more marketable in today’s ecosystem.

    5. Making positive impact: Volunteers’ contributions can improve the quality of education our children receive, enabling them to have a brighter future that allows them to become a better version of themselves.

Overall, volunteering in our school is an enriching and rewarding experience that provides a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference in children’s lives through assisting, mentoring and guiding while learning a myriad of valuable skills.

Our urgent need is for ballet teachers! 🩰

We started our ballet program just over a year ago and have welcomed more than 10 volunteer teachers since its launch. Our dance room is fully equipped, including a ballet barre, providing a great space for instruction.

We’re happy to welcome both long-term students and professional teachers. For the past two years, we have also staged a short performance of The Nutcracker.

We are looking for volunteers who are passionate about ballet and eager to help us continue building a strong program.

If you're interested in volunteering with us, please let us know the specific skills you can teach that would be benefit our students. Please note again that ballet teachers are given priority.

As a volunteer you will also assist the local teachers with various tasks such as lesson planning, classroom management, and student support.

Additionally, volunteers are needed to help lead group activities that align with the school's project-based curriculum, including art, music, dance, social studies, science, computers, and more. Another important role for volunteers is to practice English conversation with the students to help develop their fluency. This is a great opportunity for individuals who are passionate about education and want to make a positive impact in the lives of children in a rural community.

    Volunteer Accommodation, Food, and Lifestyle

We welcome international volunteers to stay with us at our nonprofit language and arts school in rural Kep, Cambodia.

Volunteers stay on-site at the school in a large, clean room with air-conditioning, three twin beds, and a private bathroom with a hot-water shower. We recently added air-conditioning because the Cambodian heat can be quite intense, especially during certain times of the year, and it has made the accommodation much more comfortable.

We provide basic food for volunteers during their stay. This normally includes things such as rice, eggs, fruit, vegetables, breakfast items, and meat or other basic ingredients depending on dietary preferences.

We do ask volunteers to prepare and cook their own meals. This gives everyone more flexibility with meal times and allows volunteers to cook what they like from the food available.

There is a shared kitchen at the school with a gas stovetop, refrigerator, cooking equipment, and a washing machine.

If there are particular Western foods, snacks, specialty items, or additional ingredients that you would like, you are welcome to purchase those yourself. We can help with transportation to the market or supermarket when needed.

Please let us know before arrival if you are vegetarian or have other dietary needs so we can plan accordingly.

Volunteer hours are usually Monday to Friday from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Ballet volunteers may occasionally work until around 6:00 PM during rehearsals or when preparing for performances.

Mornings, evenings, and weekends are generally free.

Smoking is not allowed anywhere on the school grounds.

Your host is the American founder and director of the school. This is not a traditional Cambodian homestay, but because volunteers live at the school and spend time with our students, teachers, families, and neighbors, there are many opportunities to experience everyday life in a rural Cambodian community.

We also have four dogs at the school. They are part of our family, so volunteers should be comfortable living around dogs.

    Food and Transportation Nearby

Our village itself does not have restaurants or street-food stalls within easy walking distance.

There is a popular Italian restaurant in the neighboring village along our road, as well as a few local Khmer restaurants outside the village.

For more restaurants, cafés, supermarkets, and Western food, volunteers can travel to Kep Beach or Kampot.

For transportation, we can provide a bicycle for volunteers to use free of charge.

Motorbikes can also be rented locally at a discounted rate, and PassApp or tuk-tuks can be arranged at the volunteer's own expense.

    Life in Kep

Kep is quiet and peaceful. It is very different from living in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, or another busy tourist area.

This placement is usually a good fit for someone who is independent and comfortable having a lot of free time outside of volunteering.

Some volunteers enjoy reading, working online, doing creative projects, exploring the countryside, visiting Kep or Kampot, or simply having a quieter routine for a while.

It is important to understand that staying in the village can sometimes feel isolated if you do not have transportation or if you are looking for nightlife and lots of activities.

We prefer to be clear about this before volunteers arrive. This opportunity is best for someone who enjoys a slower lifestyle and is comfortable organizing their own free time.

For volunteers who enjoy rural life and becoming part of a small school community, it can be a very special experience.

We hope this gives you a clear idea of what staying and volunteering with us is like, and we would be happy to welcome volunteers who feel this type of experience is a good match for them.
