We are Annette and Matthias, long term Yukoners.

If you like to work and live with dogs then this is the perfect opportunity for you to spend summer/ fall or winter in the northern Canadian Wilderness.

Our dog hotel and private sled dog kennel are located in the Southern Lakes region of the Yukon Territory.

You can learn from us how to train and take care of all kinds of dog breeds. We offer obedience training and behavioural adjustment to our canine guests. We help dogs to overcome separation anxiety, reduce their aggression level and do programs on leash training and nose work. Our approach is based on positive reinforcement. We would love to share some tricks with you and useful background knowledge.

Our sled dogs (sprinters and mid distance dogs) are on a certain training routine as well. You will hear a lot about sled dog care and the difference of summer and winter training. On relaxed days in the summer we walk the Alaskan Huskies to the nearby lake for a swim or put them in front of the ATV (Quad) so they can build up their muscles. These dogs are born to be athletes.

Of course the work includes also preparing meals, feeding the dogs, cleaning their pens and lots more.

All dogs need attention, exercise and love, love, love.

Your stay can also serve as an internship. We can send you home with paperwork confirming your hands on training at Stay and Play which is useful when you intend to handle/train dogs in the future (dog training, dog hotel, doggy daycare, animal assisted therapy). Annette is a certified dog trainer and has a degree in animal assisted therapy.

Our three horses (1 quarter horse and 2 Islandic horses) are waiting for you as well. If you have some experience in horse back riding, they would be happy to take you on trail rides. If you love horses but you are not really into horse back riding, then you can do some ground work with them in the arena. Feeding the horses and cleaning the horse pasture are additional duties.

Of course there are more jobs to be done on our farm. From helping to cut fire wood, fixing fences, cut brush, clean trails to fixing dog houses. Everything is covered.

This job is physical and you should bring a good fitness with you.

Your accommodation is a lovely cabin with a wonderful view to the nearby mountain range and into the so called Secret Valley. The cabin provides a 2 burner propane range, wood stove (if needed) as well as a sunny porch and balcony where you can enjoy the sun during your time off. There is also an outhouse for you when natures calls.

With a bit of luck you can spot moose, lynx, coyotes, wolves, beavers, grizzly bears and black bears.

You are welcome to use one of our kayaks on the huge lake close by. Discover the beautiful Yukon Wilderness by hiking or just sit there and watch the beavers playing in the nearby beaver pond! Imprint of man is still low in this area.

We are looking for somebody for summer/ fall and winter 2022.

You are a dog lover and you love the outdoors. You are familiar with dog behaviour, you stay calm in stressful situations, you like to work hard and you don't care about getting dirty hands.

All help and fun is around dogs and the dog yard (feeding, watering, scooping the poop, snow shovelling, checking fences). You will spend lots of quality time with your canine friends, walking and petting them. You will learn how to handle sled dogs: you harness them, bring them to the stake out, hook them up to a sled and of course you will go mushing with your dog team. If you are experienced you can also skijor with one or two dogs. In summer we train the dogs on a scooter or with the ATV.

You know how to use an ax and how to make a fire. You have no problem lifting 20 kg (40 pounds) You don't mind to be outside when it is - 30 C to -40 C and most important: You love dogs.
You have to be ok with solitary work.

The reward for your hard work is unconditional love from our four legged athletes and a true Northern exposure.

Have you ever pictured yourself to live in a cozy cabin in Canada's North? Well, here is your opportunity. The cabin is located about 300 meters away from our house. So you will have lots of privacy. It has a wood stove, table, chairs, bed, dresser, kitchen utilities and an outhouse. There is no running water and electricity in the cabin. Enjoy beautiful views to the surrounding mountains from either your balcony or your deck and have a chat with your closest neighbours, our three horses.

We have a strict non-smoking policy in the cabin, in the main house, around the dogs and in the yard. Basically everywhere.

Hiking, canoeing, kayaking, snowshoeing, x-country skiing, skijoring, wildlife viewing, birding are just a few activities. Every season offers different possibilities. You can do a lot around our beautiful location at Little Atlin Lake.

We cannot provide a vehicle to you. So if you would like to stay flexible it would be best to either buy or rent a car. About every 8 to 10 days we go to town to run our errands. Of course you are welcome to join us and do your things.

    We have limited internet access.

If you are looking for a lot of social activities, restaurant visits, concerts etc. this might not be the best place for you. The probably biggest party is, when the dogs are howling. But that's the best anyways, right?
