Vom Workawayer (Awa Diagne) für Host

I spent nearly a month at Mariana and Martin's house with their three children. They were my final stop on my road trip through Mexico.

Family and surroundings: Children are engaging and inquisitive. The oldest daughter is very intelligent and speaks quite a bit of English. I needed to practice my Spanish with the young boy more. Emilia, the… read more baby, is my favorite. She's a sweetheart who reminded me of caring for my nephews and nieces. The family is more modern Mexican in nature. My room and bathroom were both lovely. The house is in a complex that has a gym and nice pool that you can use. The location was a little out of the way from the center of Merida, which I should have anticipated. It costs me a lot of money to take an uber to the center, so plan accordingly. However, if you can get past the oppressive humidity and heat, Merida has a lot to offer. Mariana, the mother, spoke with me in Spanish every day, and I appreciated her corrections. Martin is very nice and funny, which added to the enjoyment of my stay. The family shared delicious homemade food, and lunch was frequently eaten together. This is my favorite exchange because I miss my family meals while I'm away from home.

Tasks: Monday through Friday, from 2 to 7 p.m., I was in charge of playing with the kids and teaching them English. The task is not difficult in and of itself. But, as with children, you must be patient. We had enjoyable sessions as well as days when the children refused to learn anything. Again, patience is the key word.

Communication: Good. Martina and Martin are lovely people but I wasn't always sure what the day's plans were. I like to plan ahead of time, so be prepared to be a little flexible on this front. The parents were open to communication, which is all you really need for a pleasant experience. If you want something different out of the exchange, you should advocate for yourself and tell them about it and I'm sure they will try to accommodate.

I'd like to thank Mariana and Martin for being generous, for hosting me and allowing me into their family life. I will never forget those beautiful and kind children.. I will definitely pay them a visit the next time I am in Merida.

Last words: I recommend this family because they put me in good conditions. The work load was reasonable. After I left, I wanted to go to Cozumel and they were so nice to let me stay at their apartment on the island. They are generous and young parents and I wish them all the best in life.
