🌿 Himalayan Family Homestead – Volunteer Opportunity (Himachal Pradesh, India)

We are a small, family-run homestead located in a beautiful village near Jogindernagar, Himachal Pradesh. Surrounded by mountains, fresh air, and a peaceful natural environment, our home is centered around organic living, permaculture, and simple village life.

This is a real home, not a commercial farm, retreat, or hostel.

    ---

    🌱 About the Project

We are developing a diverse food forest and garden system on our land, growing:

    Vegetables, fruits, and herbs

    Seasonal crops using natural/organic methods

    Medicinal and culinary plants

We also care for a small number of animals (chickens, etc.) and are continuously building and improving the land.

    ---

    🧑‍🌾 Volunteer Tasks

Tasks vary depending on the season, but may include:

    Planting, weeding, and garden maintenance

    Harvesting and seed saving

    Composting and soil building

    Natural building

    Light animal care

Occasional help with simple home tasks

👉 Help is flexible and collaborative, usually around 4–5 hours per day.

    ---

    🏡 Living Situation

You will be staying in a shared family home with:

    Me (American)

    My husband (from Haryana)

    His mother

    Languages spoken: English and Hindi

This is a traditional household environment, so:

Respect for family dynamics is essential

The home is active and shared, not private or secluded

    ---

    🍲 Food

We cook fresh, traditional Indian meals daily, mostly vegetarian, using seasonal ingredients (often from the garden).

You will share meals with the family.

    🌿 What We’re Looking For

This experience is best suited for people who are:

Genuinely interested in farming, gardening, or permaculture

Comfortable in a family and cultural environment

    Independent, respectful, and adaptable

Happy with simple living (not luxury or retreat-style expectations)

    ---

    ⚠️ Important Notes

This is not a retreat, yoga center, or social hostel

It is a working home environment

Flexibility is important—daily rhythms may change

You should be comfortable with shared spaces and rural life

    Kultureller Austausch und Lernmöglichkeiten

Our home is a blend of cultures — I am American, and my husband and his mother are from Haryana, so daily life naturally includes both English and Hindi, along with traditional Indian ways of living.
Volunteers will experience real village life in the Himalayas, including home-cooked vegetarian meals, simple daily routines, and time spent together as a family. There is opportunity to learn about local food, farming practices, and cultural rhythms that are part of everyday life here.
Interaction with neighbors and the local community happens organically, and the environment is peaceful, nature-focused, and slower-paced than city life.
We also enjoy learning from others — whether it’s different perspectives, skills, or ways of living — so the exchange goes both ways.

We welcome open-minded, grounded and respectful individuals who genuinely enjoy working with the land. Help includes gardening, permaculture, natural building, and simple homestead tasks.
This is a real home environment, not a retreat or volunteer camp, so we appreciate people who are self-motivated, independent, and comfortable with a flexible, unstructured rhythm.
You should be happy with physical work, simple living, and shared spaces. Experience is helpful, but a positive attitude, awareness, and willingness to contribute are most important.

  • Unterkunft

    Unterkunft

Accommodation is simple and part of our family home environment.
Depending on availability, volunteers may stay in:
    • A private bedroom with an attached bathroom (limited availability)
    • A downstairs indoor space with a private curtained sleeping area and access to a bathroom
    • Or a camping setup on the land for those who enjoy a more outdoor experience
All options are clean and comfortable, but simple. Flexibility is appreciated, as arrangements can vary depending on the timing and number of guests.
This is a shared, lived-in home rather than a private or luxury accommodation.

    🌿 Food & Daily Living
Food here is simple, fresh, and deeply connected to the land and local community.
We receive fresh milk from neighbors twice a day, and regularly make our own butter and ghee. Yogurt is prepared fresh, and we often have eggs from our chickens and quail.
Our wheat comes from a family member and is stone-ground at a local water mill, and meals are made using seasonal vegetables, fruits, and herbs — both locally sourced and grown on the land.
Everything is vegetarian, home-cooked, and part of the natural rhythm of daily life here.
The experience is not about variety or “menu options,” but about eating what is fresh, available, and in season, and sharing meals together as part of the household.

We are located in a peaceful Himalayan village surrounded by nature. Right next to the house are two small Hindu temples, and the area offers rivers, beautiful walks, and quiet places to explore.
In your free time, you can enjoy hiking, visiting nearby villages, or simply spending time in nature. Paragliding is available in the region, and Tibetan monasteries and Bir/Billing are about 30 minutes away. Dharamshala is around 2 hours away for a longer trip.
We are in a more tucked-away village, so within walking distance it is mainly nature and local surroundings. For visiting other places, a taxi is usually needed — we’re happy to help arrange local taxis for outings and exploration.
Daily life here is simple and grounded, with early mornings, shared meals, and quiet evenings.
We appreciate people who are respectful of the home, the space, and the rhythm of life here.
