  Tabatô is a small and harmonious "Tabanca" (village) located 10 km from Bafatá, in the interior of Guinea-Bissau. In this tabanca 274 people cohabit, most of them coming from the ethnicity Mandinga and Fula. Surprisingly, traditions that go back more than 4 centuries ago are still very much linked, without being forgotten or less practiced (such as traditional marriages, dances and music Afro-Mandinga, Readings of the Quran, "dimbasumo", a celebration of women, "cambanicafó", a celebration of the union of young workers). These conquer any visitor that spreads the word about what is tabatô, attracting other curious travelers to come and meet our community.
  My name is Mutaro and I am the leader of this Tabanca. I play and live music in a very intense way since as long as I can remember and I want to show this but also to learn from and with other styles of music and rhythms. In Tabatô we produce typical instruments of the Mandinga Culture (such as the Balafon, Kora, Dumdumtama, Neguelin and Mirantelen, Djimbé, Cutil, Nhonhero, flute, etc.). Throughout our community, music runs through our veins, from the younger ones who still kept to the most elders. On the one hand we use music as a form of expression of our culture, feelings and fun. On the other we do actions to raise awareness with various NGOs (Doctors Without Borders, international plan, Tostam Guinea-Bissau, etc.) in human rights and community development topics such as gender equality. At night the community leaders teach the girls to sing and play for them to be given an opportunity they would not otherwise have. From the selling of musical instruments and playing at events, we can ensure the money to guarantee that our children have access to school.
  We are a self-sustained community, so we make use of community gardens where we produce the necessary for us (chillaguetas, guidade, "Jacatu", tomato and rain, peanuts, cassava, and corn). The raining season lasts from May to November. From March to June it's the cashew season, our largest source of income.
  Still in the rainy season, with the support of the Bafatá Medical Center, we distribute in the community medication to prevent malaria and diarrhea.

  Tabatô é uma pequena e harmoniosa tabanca (aldeia) situada a 10 km de Bafatá, no interior da Guiné-Bissau. Nesta tabanca vivem em comunidade 274 habitantes, maioritariamente da etnia mandinga e fula. Surpreendentemente, aqui ainda estão muito vinculadas tradições que perduram há mais de 4 séculos, sem que estás tenham sido esquecidas ou menos praticadas (tais como casamentos tradicionais, danças e músicas afro-mandinga, leituras do alcorão, "dimbasumo", uma celebração das mulheres, "cambanicafó", uma celebração da união de jovens trabalhadores). Estas conquistam qualquer visitante que espalha a palavra sobre o que é Tabatô, atraindo muitos visitantes a virem conhecer a nossa comunidade.
  O meu nome é Mutaro e sou o lider desta Tabanca. Toco e vivo a música de uma maneira muito intensa desde que me lembro e quero muito transmitir isso mas também aprender sobre e com outros estilos de música e de ritmo.
  Em Tabatô nós produzimos instrumentos típicos da cultura Mandinga (como o Balafon, a Kora, o dumdumtama, neguelin e mirantelen, Djimbé, cutil, nhanhero, a flauta, etc). Em toda a nossa comunidade, desde os mais novos que ainda gatinham até aos mais anciões corre a música pelas veias. Tanto usamos a música como uma forma de expressão da nossa cultura, sentimentos e de diversão como fazemos ações de sensibilização com várias ONGs (Médicos Sem Fronteiras, PLAN internacional, Tostam Guiné-Bissau,etc) em temáticas de direitos humanos e de desenvolvimento de comunidades como a igualdade de gênero e a sensibilização para que se acabe com a mutilação genital feminina.
  Depois de jantar, nós, líderes da comunidade, ensinamos as meninas a cantar e tocar para que lhes seja dada uma oportunidade que não teriam de outra forma. Da venda dos instrumentos musicais e da atuação musical em eventos, conseguimos garantir que todas as nossas crianças tenham acesso às escola.
  Somos uma comunidade auto sustentavel , pelo que usufruídos todos de hortas comunitárias onde produzimos o necessário para nós (malaguetas, guiabo, "jacatu", tomate e na época da chuva, amendoim, mandioca, e milho). A época da chuva decorre de maio a novembro.
  De Março a Junho acontece a apanha do caju, a nossa maior fonte de rendimento.
  Ainda na época das chuvas, com o apoio do centro médico de Bafatá, distribuímos na comunidade medicamentos destinados a prevenir a malária e a diarreia.

  We are looking for curious and flexible people that have the desire to invest with their qualifications and skills for the sustainable development of our community so that we can work to become fully autosuficient. We need help in our gardens and cashew picking and we are also open to hear about techniques and agricultural modes that we do not know. We also want working people who can contribute to the best functioning and infrastructure of our primary school. We are always open to innovative and creative ideas so that we can continue to learn. In terms of preserving our culture and tradition, we encourage the coming of people with experience or interested in music and dancing, digital and video marketing, photography, cultural event management, etc. Some of us have already recorded some songs and we intend to continue producing and sharing our talent. We are currently building a music school and we also intend to build a market to sell our instruments to the outside. Therefore, we also give priority to anyone who can somehow contribute to these projects. If you identify with any of these projects, do not hesitate to contact us!

  Estamos às procura de pessoas curiosas, flexíveis e com vontade de investir com as suas habilitações e aptidões para o desenvolvimento sustentável da nossa comunidade para que possamos trabalhar no sentido de nos tornarmos totalmente autosuficientes.
  Precisamos de ajuda nas nossas hortas e na apanha do caju e também estamos abertos a ouvir sobre técnicas e modos de agricultura que não conheçamos. Queremos também pessoas trabalhadoras que possam contribuir para o melhor funcionamento e infraestrutura da nossa escola primária. Estamos sempre abertos a ideias inovadoras e criativas para que possamos continuar a aprender.
  Em termos de preservação da nossa cultura e tradição, incentivamos a vinda de pessoas com experiência ou interessadas na música e na dança, marketing digital video, fotografia, gestão de eventos culturais, etc. Alguns de nós já gravaram algumas músicas e pretendemos fazer chegar a mais longe o que fazemos.
  Estamos neste momento a construir uma escola de música em Tabatô e pretendemos também construir um anfiteatro e um mercado exterior para a venda dos nossos instrumentos.   We have several options, including space for you to install your caravan, tent or van. If you wish, we have a guest room with a mattress and a bathroom where you can stay. We warn you that in the raining season there will be many mosquitoes so you should bring your mosquito net. We have running water and a lock for the door so you have your privacy.
  
  You will eat the same as us, typical Guinea Bissau food: lots of rice, accompanied by the most varied fish and meat broths. Be ready for lots of mangoes and tasty fruits with strange names that will give you instant health and strength!

  How to get here: Coming from Osvaldo Vieira Airport you have two options:
  The first, picking up a bus at 2:00 p.m. to Bafatá in the Bairro Internacional, next to the Central Mosque Atadamu, in the Bairro da Ajuda. With a cost of 2000 CFA this is the most comfortable option but also the one with most difficult access because of the heat and amount of people moving to Bafatá.
  The second, picking up the car 7plus, anytime at the central stop in Bissau, in the Bairro de Enterramento, near the military hospital. This trip costs 2800 CFA and it is if easier access. Arriving at Bafatá, you will have to take a taxi to Tabatô but contacting us with some advance, someone from our Tabanca will take you from Bafatá.
  
  In the free times: you can enjoy a donkey ride through the woods or the nearest Tabancas or choose to ride one of our bikes. You can follow the cheerful songs that surround our workers in the field, gardens and bushes. You can participate in our very rituals and customs typical from our culture. Over the weekend, you can go to Bafatá and Gabú, the cities closest to us. We usually spend the free time together, cooking, or playing, talking, but always accompanied by rhythm and music, always humming and coming up with new sounds!

  Como chegar cá: vindo do aeroporto de Osvaldo Vieira tens duas opções:
  A primeira, apanhando um autocarro as 14h para Bafatá no bairro Internacional, ao lado da mesquita central Atadamu, no bairro da ajuda. Com um custo de 2000 CFA está é a opção mais confortável mas também a de mais difícil acesso pelo calor e quantidade de pessoas que se deslocam para Bafatá.
  A segunda, apanhando o carro 7plus, a qualquer hora na paragem central em Bissau, no bairro do Enterramento, perto do hospital militar. Está viagem custa 2800 CFA e é de maior acesso.
  Chegando a Bafatá, terás que apanhar um táxi para Tabatô mas contactando-nos com a devida antecedência, alguém da Tabanca irá lá buscar-te.
  
  Nos tempos livres:
  Poderás usufruir de passeios de burro pelo bosque ou as Tabancas mais próximas, de passeios de bicicleta. Poderás seguir as cantigas alegres que acompanham os trabalhadores no campo, hortas e mato. Podes participar nos nossos rituais e costumes muito marcantes na nossa cultura. No fim de semana, podem ainda ir a Bafatá e Gabú, as cidades mais próximas de nós.
  Costumamos passar os tempos livres juntos, ora a cozinhar, ou a conversar, a brincar mas sempre acompanhados de ritmo e música, sempre a cantarolar e a inventar novos sons!
