We are the proud owners of a developing micro-farm in the hills of Zagorje ob Savi, Slovenia! The property features a traditional Slovenian style farmhouse, garden, orchard, traditional Slovenian style beehouse, rabbits, quail and more! We have been developing the property mostly on our own, blending traditional techniques with modern climate resilience for a fun and unique hobby, self-sufficient micro-farm. The farm is located a 15-minute drive or a 45-minute walk away from our current apartment. It's located in a quiet, quaint village in the hills, surrounded by forests and meadows.
We, Luka and Alyson, are a young married couple. Alyson is from the United States, and Luka is from Slovenia. We have been avid hosts on other platforms, hosting over 50 people from around the world. When we told a guest about our plans to build the micro-farm, she recommended WorkAway, which is why we are here now. We have formed some of our most meaningful, lasting friendships through hosting, and we want to continue it.
We are animal lovers and wanna-be homesteaders. We began our journey of self-sufficient and low-waste living as a way to reduce our carbon footprint, but it has brought us a deep love for our respective cultures, a rich connection to the earth, and lots of fun things to spend our day doing. We love spending time in nature, hiking and foraging and enjoying the change of the seasons. We will gladly share this part of our life with you. We love showing off the property, and inspiring others to fall in love with the old farms in their own countries, and become excited about small-scale climate resilient farming.
Our project is not a business. It is a private, personal micro-farm. Produce is grown only for our own consumption and for our volunteers to eat as it is available.Arten von Hilfe und Lernmöglichkeiten

Kultureller Austausch und Lernmöglichkeiten
We will teach you local Slovenian culture and daily life. We try to create our own products in the traditional way, and we will happily teach you about Slovenian history, food, and culture. We try to focus our time outside of the project showing you the best that Slovenia and Zasavje has to offer by giving you personalized recommendations for ways to spend your free time that are special to us, and to the town. We love to bring volunteers along to local events, family gatherings and meals with the neighbors. We can teach you foraging in the forests, authentic cooking and other Slovenian every day activities. We will be able to use the property and its surroundings to teach you about Slovenia in an in-depth and meaningful way. Hosting has held a special place in our hearts for many years on many hosting platforms, and we believe we can and will show you the best parts of our region and culture.
You will learn a lot about both traditional and modern techniques. As we are the ones doing the work, we are happy to explain what we have accomplished, what we are working on, and how it will affect our plans in the future. We will happily teach you any skills that you want to learn, and give you time to practice anything that interests you. We will also happily tell you all about the local plants, farming, gardening, and homesteading. We try to make sure that each volunteer gets the time to do something that particularly interests them, so that they can leave the project having learned something new and feeling accomplished.Arbeit
We invite individuals who are passionate about nature, tradition and innovation. We want to expand the garden and animals, and we want your help. Like any project, some days you will sweat, other days are very quiet. Every task is done with love for the earth and our community, and we want volunteers who are looking to spend time in an environment that tries its best to do better. The property is tranquil, healing and welcoming to everyone. We want to share experiences with volunteers who feel equally passionate or curious about sustainable lifestyles, and blending their own traditions with climate resilience. Doing tasks together is one of the best ways to build human connection, and we enjoy working together as a team to incite interesting discussions, share stories and in general, build meaningful friendships. We love our project, and we want individuals who feel the same spark of passion for self-sufficient living, and are interested in learning the skills and experiencing the community required to build a simple life. Gardens grow best when surrounded by love, and we hope to infuse our property with the positivity, friendship and excitement that we have found in years of hosting, on and off WorkAway.
We hope that our volunteers leave with the vision and the skills to replicate this lifestyle in their own corners of the world.

The farmhouse on the property is NOT livable, and you will NOT be staying in it, for your own health and safety. Instead, we offer our second bedroom in our apartment in Zagorje, Slovenia. You will be staying in our home, which means we will share the bathroom, kitchen, living room and outdoor space.
Bedroom: The bedroom is a small private room on the same floor as our bedroom. It has a double bed, cabinet for personal items, and space for a small desk upon request. We provide all clean bedding, that rewashed and replaced once a week, or more or less upon request.
Unfortunately, the entire upstairs is not well insulated, meaning it can be extremely cold in the winter and extremely hot in the summer. We provide an electric blanket or small electric heater in the winter and a fan in the summer. For cold snaps or heat waves, guests are welcome to sleep downstairs. But if you are a person that has trouble sleeping in heat or in cold, WE MAY NOT BE A GOOD FIT.
Kitchen: The kitchen has a fridge, stove, oven, sink, washing machine and various appliances. No microwave.
Living room: Television with cable, stereo, vinyl record player, couch.
Bathroom: Shower, sink and toilet.
Outdoor Space: A picnic table, bbq, outdoor sink, vegetable garden
Note about pets:
We have one cat living in the apartment, who rules the house. He is really furry, meaning that the cat hair gets around, and it's difficult to control. If you are a person that dislikes cat hair, we may not be a good fit. He is also go where he pleases, meaning he may spend time in your room. Was noch ...
Note about Farm Animals: Our goal is to be completely self sufficient on our food, this includes meat. We have rabbits and quail on the property that are being raised for meat and egg production. We understand that this may make some individuals uncomfortable to be around animals who are kept for this purpose. If this is something that is against your personal morals, we completely understand and respect that. However, we may not be a good fit.
Meals: On full work days, we provide hot meals, snacks and drinks on site. Sometimes we barbeque, sometimes we take volunteers out for local food. On half-work days, we guarantee one hot meal. On non-work days, we will still happily cook for you, as you are a guest in our home. You are welcome to cook with any food in the house. But we will not reimburse food that you purchase for yourself. This prevents us from having volunteers purchase large amounts of food and asking us to pay us for it after the fact. If you are hungry or need larger quantities of food, please just communicate this, and we will purchase more food to meet your needs.
We are able to cook vegan and vegetarian meals. We also have experience with volunteers with Celiac disease. We can cook our meals according to your dietary restrictions and preferences.
Surrounding Region: The region we are located is called Zasavje. It is a stunning region with a terrible Google problem. Due to its history as an industrial region, it has little to no tourism, meaning all of the stunning sites do not appear in a Google search. We have spent the last 4 years hiking all over the region, and we will send you all of the locations to see stunning mountain views, great food and the best cafes.
Public Transport: Zagorje is accessible by both train and bus from the capital, Ljubljana. We are located at the geographical center of Slovenia, meaning every amazing site, from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea is less than 3 hours away by public transit. We are also located 15-minutes to the highway, meaning the rest of Slovenia is less than 2 hour drive away.
Free Time: Our volunteers usually spend most of their time in the region, enjoying the quiet nature, away from the tourists. Usually, they will enjoy one or two days seeing other places in the country, such as Ljubljana, Piran or Lake Bled.Etwas mehr Information
