Especially looking to fill 7 April to 7 May.
Join us in building a sustainable community farm in Vieques, Puerto Rico! Our nonprofit farm hosts volunteers, internships for veterans, and long-term paid positions as volunteer coordinator and the house and logistics lead. We currently have openings in each position and would love to hear from you!

Our mission is to help restore farming in the island of Vieques and provide the community with a source of fresh, nutritious food. Currently, 99% of food and consumer goods are imported to the island with poor nutritional quality and a short shelf life, meaning there is incredible need for local food production. Our team provides high quality local produce to restaurants, local markets, and homes on the island. We currently sell chicken and duck eggs, a variety of leafy greens and microgreens straight from our gardens, and are experimenting with dairy products and other food preservation techniques.

In addition to over 0.2 acres of plant production, La Finca is also home to chickens, ducks, geese, cows, pigs, rabbits, goats, sheep, bees, dogs, and cats. Our goal is to become self-sustaining, and we use a variety of “circular economy” techniques to reduce and reuse the byproducts of production. It is a great opportunity to learn about plant and animal interactions!

Farm work is labor intensive, but rewarding. Each day you may assist with animal care, garden maintenance, and building or repair projects. Some days we might ask for a group effort during our weekly harvest or on a major project, but otherwise we try to make the experience match your interests. If you have a special skill like soap making or canning you want to share with us or if you just want to learn more about how we farm in a remote community on a tropical island, we are open to anyone at any skill level.

During your stay, we do expect appropriate farm attire during your working hours as a safety precaution. Closed toe shoes and pants are required for some tasks around the farm, and sun protection (sunscreen or UV protection clothing) is a must. Feel free to ask questions regarding this request!

We offer community living in our 2 bedrooms: each has 6-10 camp-style bunk beds and a full bathroom. We have a large living room/lounge area, washer/dryer/clothesline, and shared kitchen within the main volunteer house. The kitchen is stocked with staple foods, such as rice and beans and occasionally vegetables from the local market. You are welcome to purchase your own specialty items from the local grocery. We accommodate special dietary requirements to the best of our ability. As much as possible, we also incorporate farm fresh foods into our meals! Chicken eggs, homemade bread, and leftover greens is a popular way to start the day.

We are looking for volunteers who can commit to a month or longer. In order to fully experience the farm and appreciate the island, this minimum timeframe is strongly recommended. We do ask volunteers to invest 5 hours for 5 days a week into the farm. Cooking for the house may be included in your volunteer hours, as we try to eat dinner together, but basic housekeeping chores such as cleaning your room and maintaining the common spaces are expected as part of communal living. We expect that you are willing to participate in communal living and become part of our group dynamic. Nonviolent communication skills are essential. Violent and hostile behaviors are not to be tolerated.

If you feel you are in alignment with our mission to serve and restore our local community, please reach out to further the conversation! In your initial message, please include the word “papaya” in the subject line to help us connect.

The local community members we help often love having visitors and talking about their lives and experiences. Vieques has a unique history and context within the Caribbean, long before Hurricanes Irma and Maria knocked out communication with the outside world. There's no better way to learn about it than hearing first-hand stories from the people who lived through it. People are generally willing to help you practice your Spanish here as well.

There are plenty of opportunities to interact with the community both on and off the farm. We do weekly deliveries to restaurants, community members, and a local food kitchen, all who are happy to talk about the island! Furthermore, we grow many native plants on the farm, such as yucca, gandules, aji dulce, yautia, jackfruit, and more! We offer many opportunities to learn about native food, cuisine, and even traditional fencing techniques.

Especially looking to fill 7 April to 7 May.
We currently need long term volunteers (1 month minimum) who are motivated and hard workers.
We have work opportunity openings for a house and logistics person and volunteer coordinator.
We offer paid internship opportunities for veterans.

We are looking for long-term volunteers with interest in the following projects:
    - Construction: Someone open to helping us plan and oversee our construction projects! We are always building new animal pens and fixing fences and can teach a variety of fencing and construction techniques that we use in Vieques.

-Mechanic: Have an interest in cars or a special knack for fixing them? We have a fleet of cars in need of a creative fix. We do not require certification.

-Garden lead: All about plants! Help us strategize, grow, monitor, and improve our garden beds. Plant, harvest, prune!

We are also open to volunteers wanting to learn and assist with general farm maintenance, including the following tasks:
-collecting forage for the goats, sheep, cows, and rabbits
    -collecting, washing, and processing eggs
-sorting food scraps to feed to the pigs
    -cleaning animal pens
    -pruning and weeding the gardens
    -turning the compost
-moving fencing material and reinforcing the perimeter
    -harvest and deliveries
    -planting and propagating
    -milking goats

We ask volunteers to work about 5 hours of work per day. We also try to keep one weekday for light housework. We ask that people staying at the house pick up after themselves to help keep the living space clean and tidy. You will be living in a communal environment and we ask that you be respectful of others and the space.

    Living Space:
The volunteer house is two stories. We host volunteers on the ground floor, which has 2 dormitory bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a common space, kitchen, and laundry room. Each dorm room has 6 bunk beds and a full bathroom.

    Food Provided:
We are in the process of making the house self-sustainable and growing more of our own food. We provide fresh duck and chicken eggs, home-made fresh bread, rice, beans, coffee, pasta, oatmeal, peanut butter, and general pantry staples for volunteers to prepare their own meals. The variety and quantity from the garden and trees varies by season. We also get produce from a local market on Tuesdays, which occasionally includes a variety of fruits and vegetables. Volunteers are welcome to purchase additional specialty items from the local grocery.

    Meal Schedule:
Most of us are on different schedules and working different projects, so volunteers are generally on their own to prepare breakfast and lunch. For dinner, at least 2 volunteers will team up to cook, and we eat together as a house family every night. We have volunteers with all different diet preferences from vegans to flexitarians.

    Transportation:
There is limited transportation on the island of Vieques. Therefore, we cannot guarantee a car for personal use, however, if we are already running errands in town we are happy to give you a ride. Many volunteers in the past have walked from the farm to nearby beaches without issue.

GETTING TO VIEQUES AND THE VOLUNTEER HOUSE:

You will either need to fly from San Juan to the tiny airport in Vieques served by either CapeAir or Vieques Airlink. Vieques Air Link tends to be cheaper, usually 85 dollars, but you have to transfer airports in San Juan. Or you can take the ferry from Ceiba on the east side of the big island. To get from San Juan to the ferry terminal in Ceiba you can take a taxi, which is usually 1.5-2 hours and $80-$100 one way.

We will come and pick you up at the ferry terminal or airport in Vieques. While there are a few taxis on Vieques, it's easier for us to pick you up and take you to the house the first time rather than explain to you how to get to the house on your own since road names and addresses are not common on the island.

We have wifi in the house, and emergency backup solar power in case of outages. However, speeds are limited, especially with a full house. It is recommended to bring a hotspot or tether your phone plan. All major US phone networks are available here, and you can check the coverage maps to be 100% certain.
