All in all, I had a very good experience with Roman and I will not hesitate to recommend him to any host who might benefit from an extra set of helping hands.

But everyday work began, and I realized that he has neither gardeners nor workers here, but only a disciplined owner who does almost all the work himself, and his guests from Workaway who help him, and this surprised me very much.
From the very first days I realized that strict planning and discipline are the secret of purity and beauty in the land of Udi. From the very first days I had to get into this rhythm. Every day at exactly 9 am we started the work day, and I did a variety of jobs: clearing leaves, weeding grass, chopping wood, sawing trees, cleaning roof eaves, and so on. For lunch we ate at his castle, the food was always tasty and healthy. Udi bought the rest of the food for the whole week for me separately, and I prepared it myself in my kitchen.
For a week while Udi was away, I looked after his cheerful and friendly dog Shelby, whom I myself had come to love. He always obeyed all my commands and behaved well.
Ultimately, I lived in Udi’s house for 2 months, arriving on October 19, and leaving him exactly on December 19, 2023. I learned a lot during this time. I did work that I had never had to do before. Mastered various tools and devices for various manipulations around the house and garden. I became more disciplined and physically stronger. I lived in a cozy apartment with my own room, my own kitchen and toilet. Udi himself is a simple, kind and fair owner. I spent two weeks in August in the company of Udi in his beautiful home. … read more workawayer, we created a perfect synergy. I am not familiar with animals, but I have happily got used to the presence of Daisy (the cat) and Shelby (the dog): if you love dogs you will adore this big, affectionate puppy!
The work: I carried out almost exclusively outdoor gardening work, and every day Udi taught me some new gardening skill or the usage of – until then – unknown professional tool. Initially I was a bit scared by the amount of information in a field that was new to me, but I gained confidence and had fun while working. The work was often physically tiring, but the five-hour working day was never exceeded and I always had the whole weekend to rest. Pack some sturdy shoes and trousers!
The language exchange: at first, I had some reservations about the idea of going to France and speaking only English, but I did not regret the choice because thanks to Udi’s English I enriched my vocabulary. Udi has varied interests, an all-round knowledge, and many stories to share.
Food and accommodation: the house is an authentic castle, and I had a whole comfortable and bright apartment for me with living room, bedroom and a modern bathroom! The most comfortable workaway accommodation I have ever had! The meals are taken at regular times.
Leisure: the estate has a large garden and is surrounded by woods and small villages, so it is perfect to enjoy nature and keep fit. From the nearest station, you can reach Lille and Paris by train.
All in all I had a great time and would be happy to return. Thank you, Udi! I hope to see you again soon!
Ho trascorso circa due settimane di agosto in compagnia di Udi nella sua bellissima dimora. Udi è una persona molto corretta e sincera, il suo modo di comunicare è diretto e si cura molto del benessere dei suoi volontari. Sarà sempre pronto a venire incontro alle vostre richieste, basta rispettare le regole e chiedere! Con Alice, un’altra workawayer, si è creata una perfetta sinergia. Non ho confidenza con gli animali ma mi sono abituato volentieri alla presenza della gatta Daisy e del cane Shelby: se amate i cani adorerete questo grande e affettuoso cucciolo.
Il lavoro: Ho svolto quasi esclusivamente lavori di giardinaggio e ogni giorno Udi mi ha insegnato qualche nuova tecnica o l’utilizzo di un nuovo attrezzo professionale. Inizialmente ero un po’ spaventato dalla quantità di informazioni in un terreno per me nuovo, ma poi ho acquisito confidenza e mi sono divertito; il lavoro è stato spesso fisicamente stancante, ma il monte ore giornaliero di cinque ore non è mai stato superato, ho sempre avuto l’intero fine settimana per riposarmi. Mettete in valigia scarpe e pantaloni robusti!
Lo scambio linguistico: in principio avevo qualche riserva all’idea di andare in Francia e parlare esclusivamente inglese, ma non mi sono pentito della scelta perché Udi ha un’eccellente proprietà di linguaggio e durante le nostre lunghe chiacchierate a tavola ho arricchito il mio lessico. Udi ha disparati interessi e ha molte storie interessanti da condividere.
Vitto, alloggio: la casa è un autentico castello e ho avuto per me un bellissimo e luminoso appartamento privato con piccolo salotto, stanza da letto e un moderno bagno. Mai avevo soggiornato in un alloggio più confortevole! I pasti si consumano a orari regolari e sarete invitati a condividere le vostre specialità culinarie.
Tempo libero: la tenuta ha un vasto giardino ed è circondata da boschi e piccoli villaggi, quindi è perfetta per chi ama tenersi in forma. Dalla più vicina stazione è possibile raggiungere in treno Lille e Parigi.
Nel complesso mi sono trovato molto bene e sarei felice di tornare. Grazie Udi, spero che ci rivedremo presto!

… read more context and the bigger picture (for example that they were regularly driven to and from the train station and the shops, that they chose to stay in the annexed apartment, that they were told in advance that the heating system was broken and they still wanted to come, that they were offered additional heaters but they said that one is enough, that they were regularly asked if their apartment is warm enough and they said that it was, that they broke the clothes dryer in their apartment and used the laundry machine and dryer in my own apartment every single day.... these are just a few examples) . **text redacted** As you might expect, I have my own views our mutual experience which I have shared in private with them. The place at Dourlers is a lovely place. Indoor and outdoor spaces are well organized and well maintained thanks to the workaways.
Udi was immediately welcoming and is very precise about working hours (preparing lunch is not counted in the hours), usually three hours in the morning and two after lunch.

… read more divided into three rooms separate from the main house. April was still very cold and the heating didn't work so we had a small electric heater to heat the bedroom only.
We stayed two weeks in which we cleaned the weeds from the flower beds, split and arranged the wood, cleaned Udi's accommodation and the first floor windows from the swallow's nests, cut the plants of the external fence by removing the branches.
In the morning Udi usually worked with us to cut the plants of the external fence and when he doesn't do it he can still monitor you from the many cameras scattered around the estate.
He is usually away two days a week when the main house is closed and it is not possible to use some services such as the laundry.
During your free time, if you are not too tired, you can go hiking in the surrounding countryside where you can admire beautiful landscapes. The place is not well connected by public transport (the closest train station is about 9km away).

There are local places to run and walk or ride. Udi had an app for his own running and walking routes. And walked a 60k walk in one day with workaway volunteer Alice and his young dog Shelby.
