The commune-based NGO was born due to the need for water and sanitary solutions and environmental sustainability to support the safety of women in Las Colonias, a suburb on the outskirts of the city of Pereira. The residents did not have any kind of support nor protection from the government or public entities. Little by little, we gained the trust of the community’s residents with our transformative processes and a cooperative philosophy without political, religious or racial ideology. Since then, we have endured small projects to support the improvement of the quality of sanitary conditions in the community with the goal of self-empowerment and not as receivers of charity. We don't want privileged people to come and feel pity of the local conditions neither to make selfies with poor kids. If you feel you can do your best to contribute to this cause and be out of your comfort zone, then let us know!

The projects are financed by small donations from different sources. Our aim is to make the invisible part of Colombia known but also that you as a traveller realise about your own privileges and turn it into real support. "White saviours" are not welcome.

If you want to be a digital volunteer before coming, that is a plus!

The travelers will learn about the “invisible Colombia” and the consequences of the global inequality. This is an incredible opportunity to get to know a genuine and culturally diverse place. LAS COLONIAS makes up part of the Esperanza-Galicia suburb on the outskirts of the city of Pereira which belongs to the coffee growing region. This settlement was formed 20 years ago by internal displaced people of all ethnicities from all over the country. According to the last census, there are 150 homes and around 800 people with afro Colombian, indigenous and mestizo ethnic groups.

Las Colonias is close to many charming towns and beautiful natural parks. There is lots of opportunities to enjoy weekends away exploring all the region has to offer.

A basic level of Spanish would be helpful, however, a home stay with a host family is a fantastic spring board from which to improve Spanish language skills at any level.

    2) Social workers or related professions able to work in projects of gender equity, leadership, entrepreneurship, self esteem/development, conflicts resolution, community empowerment, teamwork, etc.
    3) Support on cleaning and conditioning of river banks.
    4) Someone willing to support the environmental awareness campaigns, gender justice, ecology, natural resources management, etc.
    5) Support formulating proposals for socioecological projects.

Specific on bioengineering, smart and resilient communities:
