Beschreibung

We own a small holding / sanctuary for rescued animals and birds. At present, We have a pig, named Samson,ducks, geese, hens, cockerels, rabbits, tortoise, and 2 large dogs.

The animals and birds do change frequently, as we take in all sorts of rescues for rehabilitation also.

YOU NEED TO BE ANIMAL / BIRD LOVER'S.

We have a detached self contained chalet in the grounds, which accommodates up to 5 guests.

We are based in the Campo, so very peaceful, tranquil, 360° views of flora and fauna. Amazing sunsets/sunrise.
Walking distance to local bar/restaurant and 10 mins to town, by car, or 25 minute cycle.
Breakfast basket daily in The Chalet( served 8.00 - 8.30am )
Dinner in main house. ( Served 2.00-3.00pm )
Supper prepared & cooked to eat at your leisure in The Chalet.

All toiletries/linen etc are provided. Use of washing machine on longer stays.

Where to begin… Unfortunately, our stay at the animal sanctuary didn’t end well. We’re a young Italian couple who were supposed to stay for a month but ended up staying for six days. I’d like to mention the positive aspects of the place first. As clearly described in the information, the house is situated in the open countryside and the daily work … read more involves thoroughly cleaning the areas where the animals are kept, mainly chickens and geese. It’s not difficult work, but you certainly mustn’t be afraid of getting dirty. The animals are all lovely, including the two dogs that live in the owners’ house. The owners are two English elder people, so you shouldn’t expect to speak Spanish, but this was also clear from the general information. Both, however, made a positive first impression, even though they are very different: Colin is very kind and quiet, whilst Nicky is outgoing and very talkative. We didn’t encounter any problems during our first few days there. At the start, Nicky – the lady who runs the animal shelter and also does the cooking for the main meal we share together after a morning’s work – explained what we needed to do, with plenty of chatting during and after the meal. These meals are varied and well-cooked, mainly meat-based; they aren’t particularly keen on vegetables, but I believe there are exceptions for vegetarians. Breakfast and dinner, meanwhile, are attractively presented but simple and made with inexpensive ingredients.

For our part, we immediately paid attention to cleanliness, as requested, both in the animal kennels and in the chalet where we slept. In general, we were always helpful and polite, and this was recognised straight away.

Coming to the issue that led us to leave much earlier than planned: one morning we made a mistake by using straw that was intended for animal feed—because it was fresh—as bedding for one of the animal pens, whilst in the others we had used the older straw. This had been briefly explained to one of us the night before, when – even though our presence wasn’t required or expected – we went along anyway to lend a hand whilst the animals were being fed.

When, the following morning after the cleaning, the owner noticed that we’d also used fresh straw, she started shouting out of the blue, telling us we’d made a mistake. We hadn’t expected in the slightest that we would be shouted at over something like that.

We apologised anyway, and the matter seemed settled and calm restored. Although we were surprised by the anger shown after days of praise for our work and friendly chats, we didn’t complain. We skipped our coffee break, but it didn’t seem a big deal, except that communication with her had broken down.

We then set about building an extension to a goose house with her, and she kept ranting that we’d measured the wood wrong and that, in general, nothing was right – a constant nervousness that we understand, but in that instance, after hours of work, it was unjustified.

We helped out, but she didn’t trust our work and shouted at us #redacted#; we simply replied that she should stay calm, as we were working together as usual. This complete change in attitude threw us completely off balance, and we were ready to discuss what had happened like adults over the afternoon meal. A meal that didn’t seem to be on the cards that day, as she had, in the meantime, stopped speaking to us again.

We asked her husband, who had ALWAYS been calm and friendly, if we would be eating that day, and in the end we were given some hot dogs, but she didn’t show up. We realised, whilst discussing it on the morning of our departure, that unfortunately it is impossible to talk to her without ending up agreeing with her and, above all, having to put up with her shouting, even though our work up to that point had been impeccable and we had always been positive.

We had many doubts because leaving and abandoning the little animals and Colin (the two stars) seemed unfair to us, but we realised that from that moment on we would always be on edge, afraid of making even the slightest mistake. For us, it’s simple: if there’s mutual respect, we can work together; otherwise, goodbye. We decided we didn’t deserve to be treated like that for another three weeks, so we left.

She couldn’t understand it and forced her husband not to see us off, so we hitchhiked. We’d be happy to stay in touch with him.

I think that if you decide to go there, you need to bear this in mind.

She didn’t notice how clean and neat I made the warehouse after … read more clearing the grass and soil; instead, in the end she blamed me for not closing the warehouse door and kept nagging nonstop. I couldn’t take it anymore, so I told her, “We did close it. It was your husband who closed it. As for why it was open again, I don’t know.” She didn’t believe me, thought I was lying, and even called her husband to confront me. I was relieved he was there—otherwise I would never have been able to prove my innocence.

Work started at 9 a.m. and went nonstop until 2 p.m., and then in the evening, around 6 p.m., I had to go back to work around for another 1–2 hours while they feeding the animals. It was very cold in the mornings, but since I had to work on several farms, I couldn’t wear thick clothes, so I caught a cold. She began to despise me, making sarcastic remarks about how COVID-19 came from my country and that I shouldn’t be “running around.”

I wanted to cook some traditional food from my country for them to try. I had barely started, not even a quarter of the way through, when she started yelling at me, saying I was chopping too many chilies and that there would be none left in the future. Then she drove me out of the kitchen. I’m sure she had never been to Asia and knew nothing about Asian cuisine—her cupboard only had European spices.

I gave her and her husband a small gift each. Her husband was polite and sincerely thanked me, but she sneered at it. At that moment, I honestly wanted to take the gift back. My first Workaway turned into a complete lack of respect.

As for the food provided: lunch was for three people, but the portions weren’t divided equally—I always got less (she thought I was small and short, so I needed less but the heavy labor work that she gave should meet her big body standards). Even if it wasn’t enough, I couldn’t have more. For breakfast and dinner, they bought the cheapest bread—€2 for 8 small rolls. Each meal, I only got one roll. Yogurt was €2 a dozen, very sugary, the cheapest kind. One day I thought it was too sweet and left it in the fridge; she later took it out, tore it open, mixed it with something else, and gave it back to me as a meal. The farm was very far from town—an hour by bike—so it wasn’t easy to buy my own food.

When I had my period, the bleeding was heavy and my stomach hurt badly. She then increased my workload. After I finished cleaning two chicken coops and two pig-and-sheep pens in the morning, she wanted me to dig up stones from dry land one by one, haul them with a cart, and dump them elsewhere to fill holes. I gritted my teeth and endured it. What I couldn’t stand was her attitude: after I cleared a large area in two days, she sarcastically claimed it took me three days to do so little. I keep a diary and take photos to track my work—it was clear it was two days, not three. But even taking photos became a “crime”: she accused me of always checking the time while working, when in reality I was just taking clock-in photos.

On the day I left, I told her I could go whenever was convenient for her—today, tomorrow, or the day after. It was a Friday, and the next day was a Spanish holiday. I hadn’t booked a hotel yet, but I was mentally exhausted and just wanted to leave. I’m working on the farm from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.,while she suddenly stormed into my room to inspect cleanliness. I hadn’t had time to tidy up yet, so she cursed nonstop, yanked off my bedsheets, and threw my things outside. I kept cleaning until 4 p.m., while she continued yelling, as if she held endless grudges.

She wasn’t kind to people or to animals—especially with her words. At least the animals didn’t understand her and could live in peace. I stuck it out for 2 weeks, and I really admire myself for that. If you don’t take offensive words to heart and can just let them go in one ear and out the other, then maybe you could consider coming here to see for yourself. This is also what her husband told me when I was leaving.

Nicky & Colin are really special people, extremely caring not only for their rescued animals but Workawayers too. The Chalet is really a 5 star accommodation with million dollar views and with 3 delicious meals served a day, there's nothing more one could ask for from a workaway experience.

Both Mohammad & Shima worked hard whilst with us, stayed for 2 weeks in November 2023.
Listened to instructions on work involved, left The Chalet accommodation clean & tidy.
Fully recommend these guys for future work away.
