We are Helen, Ismail and Lahcen. We are a small family run business in the High Atlas mountains of Morocco, in a small village in the Dades Valley, which is very friendly. One side of our business, Tours, offers private 4x4 tours of the country. We also run a local hotel in the village of Ait Ouffi, a very traditional Moroccan riad with an outstanding restaurant, lovely gardens and a swimming pool for the hot weather. We have top ratings and we need any volunteer working with us to help maintain these high standards!
We practice ecotourism, we contribute to the local community by distributing clothes and food to poor nomad families, and we are currently helping to build the first ever professional daycare nursery for pre-school children in the region. Our location is extremely beautiful! Being located in a Berber region of Morocco, this is an excellent opportunity to stay in an authentic village and get to know Berber culture.

By helping out at the hotel and staying with our family, you would get to learn about Morocco's wonderful natural, architectural, cultural and historical heritage, as well as some of the challenges and opportunities facing local people running an ecotourism business in an underdeveloped country. Our family is very welcoming, and you can learn Moroccan cookery with them, get your hands or feet painted with lovely henna patterns, enjoy local music (a very important part of our traditions here) and maybe even attend local parties or festivals if there are any on while you are here.
At the moment, we are looking for a WorkAwayer to help out a bit with tourists at the hotel in April and May. You need to speak English and either French or Spanish.
The hotel is quite small, only 11 rooms, and we have a really outstanding restaurant.
Our place has a great reputation, and we need someone who will maintain the same high standards of service that we are renowned for! You don't necessarily need experience in the hospitality industry, as we can show you what to do.
There are also other things you can help with around the hotel - assisting with clients' luggage when they arrive and depart, tidying the gardens and swimming pool, helping with shopping for the hotel, maybe helping out a bit with emails on reception, and of course interacting appropriately with guests.
For you, we can offer a fantastic opportunity to spend time in one of the most beautiful places in Morocco, with opportunities in your spare time to go trekking, catch a bus to the Sahara Desert for a camel trek and camping in the dunes (!), and get to know the culture and traditions of this very hospitable Berber region.
You should be aware that our location is a bit remote, and that the village does not have many facilities. This placement would not really be suitable for someone who wants to stay somewhere with night-life, shops, lots of activities going on etc. But we more than make up for this with our friendly team at the hotel and our hospitable family, who will take good care of you!
Ismail speaks English, French, Spanish; Helen speaks English, French, Spanish; Lahcen who manages the hotel speaks French, Spanish, and a little English. The rest of the family speak Berber and are very good with informal sign language!
You will stay about 1.5km from the hotel with our family in the village of Ait Oudinar, about 26km north of Boumalne Dades in the Dades Valley. We have had local project workers stay long-term with us, also volunteers coming to help support nomad families, so we are well used to having house guests and looking after them really well!
Our house and our hotel are both in very pleasant surroundings, in a lush green valley surrounded by mountains of red rock. We have an enthusiastic young team working at the hotel who are very friendly. You would eat either with our family at home or at the hotel with the staff.
In your time off you can go walking in the valley, or visit local markets, or take the bus or collective minibus taxi to visit beautiful locations such as the Todhra Gorge (1 hour away), the upper part of the Dades Valley, and even take a 2-day trip to the Sahara Desert and go camel trekking and camping in the dunes! We may be able to organise some lifts for you if possible, and you may be able to come with us if we are visiting a local town.
