* In dire need of a teacher starting near mid-January *
We need teachers in our ESL school (open for 3ish years) located in Changhua City, Changhua County, Taiwan. Minutes from the train station.
While ESL means "English as a Second Language", I do need capable, fluent, English speakers to teach it to the students using correct grammar and tenses. Please consider this before applying.
We are 2 experienced English teachers, 1 American and 1 Taiwanese that have opened an English school in Changhua City after months of preparation. We need a part time (1.5 to 6 hours per weekday, no weekends - unless you'd like) English teacher who enjoys teaching children from 7 years old to adults. You would be provided with free accommodations and have no curfew. You will have your own private room with lock and key and bathroom that may be shared with 1 other volunteer. We have 2 rooms available, so 2 positions are available at a time.
Minimum stay requirement is at LEAST 2 months or longer. Someone who can volunteers 2+ months will have priority over other candidates. This is due to the teaching methods I will introduce to you, the fact that it takes time to learn your students and to connect with them and also for the students to connect with you. The longer you are willing to work with us, the better for you and the better for them! We can not accept anyone under 1 month stay.
The teaching style is more open and fun than a typical "Buxiban" in Taiwan. We don't focus on book and homework as much as we do activities and getting children, young adults and adults involved in practical use of the English language, through projects and other forms of hands on learning.
We want highly motivated, independent and innovative people join us! I am always looking for creative, fun new ideas on how to teach classes. While I will teach you a basic guideline of how I want things done here - I am hoping folks that join me, will be have the ability to take the information I give them and make it even better! There will be days I'm unavailable to help explain the criteria - and I hope you'll be able to take the basic information I give, and make the classes super amazing! Create games, play activities that are related to the material. During your first week or two (depending on previous experience) I will give you a step by step guide. After that, I hope you will be able to walk yourself! If you need assistance at any time, you can let me know.
Combined, our team has over 25 years of experience in teaching in Taiwan. We are very open, fun and honest. There's no sitting at a desk and telling students to "shut up and sit down". We encourage fun in our classrooms and of course, positive results that the parents enjoy.
Some days we have story telling class, where we read books together and then have an activity based on the story, and short worksheets to review what they've learned. Sometimes we'll create songs, go on geo-caching adventures, or play games just for fun. As long as English is used and is encouraged, this is the goal. But, we do have a normal curriculum to follow as well - so time management is essential.
You don't need to know Chinese to teach here. Part of our learning method is to push students to speak English, and we have translator apps available on our tablet's to help the teacher in rough spots - or if all else fails - our local Taiwanese teachers will be more than happy to help (but this is a last resort). Explanation using body language and simple English can go a long way if you know how to do it right!
This is a fun opportunity in Changhua. Currently as of May 2019, classes are 5 days a week, and the times vary daily - but are all between 1PM to 8:30PM. This said, it might be at most 4 or 5 hours a day total or less, or like our current TUESDAY schedule: only 1 class at 1.5 hours a day. As we grow, our schedule changes.

Thank you for your interest and please write us today!
So much! I don't even know where to begin.
You'll have the experience of living in Taiwan, a culture rich with history, food, and family. You can learn some Chinese from our students (That's how I did it! - but not too much, remember we are ESL!), eat food in the many restaurants, night markets and food stands surrounding our city and others, and get to meet and experience the culture of the Taiwanese people.
Our school will give you experience teaching ESL to various age ranges. We have students from 8 to adult. All levels vary and we work with them with the best methods we know. Perhaps you can also introduce new teaching styles and methods to us that will also help improve their ESL education even more!
I'm a musician and computer guy - we can talk about hardware, guitars, song writing, and anything in between. We love to go bowling and play pool, and sometimes go to the bar (there aren't many here) or Taipei to go to the club. But this isn't often as we have to stay focused on our work. But sometimes, we do love to let loose and have fun!

Our students range from 8 years to adult. Different classes, you'll have different assistance. Higher level, will just be foreign (YOU!) teacher, and lower level you will have some (but not much... because it's ESL...) assistance.
We will require teaching on various days. Currently, we are a fresh new school and the schedule is ever changing. Teaching time and office time is about 3-5 hours a day depending how many teachers we have available. We now have classes daily M-F, between the hours of 2PM to 8PM. They vary daily.
I will generally help in most classes at the beginning - until you get your feet wet. Then I will let you teach by yourself as I will have other tasks to work on. There are times we have 2 or classes simultaneously so I cannot be available after ~1.5-2 weeks of training. You'll have access to a Taiwanese teacher that will be able to help you if you get stuck at any time. But, it is an ESL school, so try your best with BODY LANGUAGE and Google Translate before asking for help. Don't get nervous, just relax and the students will adore your attempt to explain anything to them. :)
So, to make it easy teaching time is from 1 1/2 to 6 hours a day, plus office time to help in the office - some days. We will let you know at least a few days in advance of your schedule and NEVER give you surprises (unless, naturally, emergencies arise).
We also hope when there is down time, that you maybe just sit in our office between 1:30 to 6pm. You can play with students, help us come up with ideas and lesson plans or do your own work on your laptop, ipad, or listen to music at a decent level to relax..
But again - to reiterate, we are just growing and subject to change. I will keep a VERY open dialog with you! We like our "Excellent" reviews and want to keep our profile this way ^_^
English, Chinese, (some) ASL (American sign language).
We have 2 bedrooms on the 4th floor that you're welcome to. Our "sunshine" room has a King sized bed and is preferred to couples that are joining us because of the extra space and bed size - but that's not necessarily how it would work out sometimes depending on availability and how scheduling works between guests.
Our 2nd bedroom isn't as amazing, but it's still clean and comfortable, and is right next to the big room. However, this room HAS NO WINDOWS. So, it's the "bat cave" room. I like it, because it's really peaceful and dark. There is also full drum set in there ;) BUT, it cannot be played without asking all other guests if it's OK first. Please be respectful of that.
You live at the school on the top floors, by yourself. We do not live in the same building - as we recently moved offsite. However, we do stop in from time to time and will love to chat and hang out when we possibly can!

Considering you're living in a Taiwanese household, and we hope you'll accept and respect Taiwanese culture; AC won't be available during certain times in your private rooms due to electrical costs, season and especially "cultural reasoning". This said; We don't use AC in any way during certain months no matter what - it's not culturally acceptable (by my wife) or reasonably. We always provide a fan, and windows are easily opened. Electrical costs are high in Taiwan, and unless the temperatures reach around 27-28 C, AC is not culturally acceptable. We do provide AC in our office during the WEEKDAYS and you're more than welcome to join us there to enjoy it. Thank you for your understanding.

*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ We have a kitchen with small refrigerator, small oven (big enough to cook a turkey), small oven (good for reheating food), rice cooker, dumpling ... whatever it's called... heater?, hot water boiler, and a small single pan sized gas cooker. All kinds of kitchen cookware and utensils. You MUST clean up after yourself. That includes wiping down the kitchen tables, cleaning the floor and your dishes. Please respect our space at all times and we'll do the same in return. We only purchase gas for the oven ONCE A MONTH. If you go over the limit, you're welcome to purchase your own smaller cans for the portable gas until the next month comes along.
*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ Overnight guests not allowed. There are motels around Taiwan on the hourly. I don't care what you do in your time off: but first and foremost we are a SCHOOL and a business - trying to build a reputation in our community. Respect that. We DO have CCTV on premise and anyone caught sneaking folks in will be immediately kicked out. This isn't a college dorm. This is a proper business/educational facility.
*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ 1 bicycle to borrow. You're responsible for maintenance if anything goes wrong with it - as we don't use it. We have have a car and if we have free time we like to go places (night market, etc) and you're welcome to join or if you need help during a certain time (especially rainy season) we'll try to help IF we can, or pickups from airport, train stations, etc for a small gas fee, or to bu a SIM Card, etc.
*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ When you leave our school, you MUST leave the room you occupy (the bedroom, hallways, and bedroom) the clean way you first found it. We are in a multi-living environment so it's for respect for your host (me and Abby) and our other guests that you keep everything in order and clean. This is not a college dorm, nor do we have a maid to clean your room after you leave (we are not a hotel). If you leave your room a mess when you you leave, *️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️I*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ am the person responsible to clean it. That's very disrespectful! THIS ALSO INCLUDES THE KITCHEN, BATHROOM, HALLWAYS And STAIRWAYS.
I think that about sums it up! If you have any questions or I left anything out, let us know.
I will update this shortly. But a quick google search for: "Changhua, Taiwan" will lead you to many things to do in the area AND surrounding areas. Taichung is the closest big city to us.
