Dear beautiful volunteer souls... We need you!
READ THE ENTIRE PROFILE BEFORE WRITING US please and thank you! :)
This is a project created by a wonderful man named Luke, in Pekan Royal Town, Pahang. He was an avid animal lover, and opened an animal (mostly cat) shelter to provide stray and unwanted cats with a proper home, sufficient medical treatment, and ultimately, give them the love and care that they deserve.
The long term goal of this project is to create an idyllic animal retreat on a nearby island, where the cats (and other furry friends including dogs, rabbits, birds and goats) can roam and live freely. Currently, there is a lot of building going on as we try to create the different spaces needed to move the last cats from the mainland shelter to the island, most importantly the clinic and the nursery as well as more housing for the volunteers as we need lots of help and support from you cat lovers out there to keep this dream a reality.
Volunteers who join us can offer support in three main areas:
- Caring for the many animals living on the island
- Building and repairing shelter facilities and cat houses or build other structures deemed necessary
- Helping with fundraising and promoting
We ask for a two week minimum stay - to really make a difference as this gives you enough time to learn the work routine and also to get to know the animals. It takes time to learn all the medical care for the cats, and the current volunteers can share this with new volunteers. A higher standard of care is achieved this way which is better for the cats.
Long term volunteers are greatly appreciated because they can really get to know the needs of the animals that we have here and generally get more involved in Luke's project.
Any volunteers with vet or vet nursing experience, we would be really grateful if you joined us!
The passing of Luke earlier this year has meant that things run differently now. We are currently doing everything in our power to maintain Luke's vision and care for the animals. The work is incredibly rewarding; however, it can also be very challenging as the animals are rescued, sometimes sick or dying. Some days run smooth and many days require patience and a sense of humour. Due to the change in circumstances we are looking for people who are flexible, easy going, able to be self-motivated and self-directed, and prepared for absolutely anything including dealing with injuries and burying cats.
The shelter and care for the animals is now completely run by volunteers, with family members taking care of administrative and construction work only. Currently we need volunteers working 5 hours a day for the twice daily care of our animals. Some work longer, voluntarily, since they are interested in making improvements.
So, if you are an animal lover, self motivated and are prepared to put time in to making a difference then this is the perfect place for you. If you have any questions about the project then just drop us a message and we will get back to you. The workaway is currently managed by our volunteers who will give you a realistic idea of what to expect here and answer any questions you have.
We truly appreciate any support that you can offer and look forward to welcoming you to the family!

You will learn a lot about the life of stray cats in Malaysia, and how and what to do to help them and how to take care for them. You can learn to give medication and to love them unconditionally. You can learn how to reuse building materials.
Luke was an extremely generous and kind person. He had always tried to make you feel like at home and now his family will try to do as what Luke had done.
The work can be hard at times, and be prepared to see very poor and sick animals. The first moments are not easy, but the animals will give you so much love in return.
Pekan is a small town about 40km from Kuantan. There are different museums, the Abu Bakar Palace, and also some beaches around the town.
As Luke did, Luke's family will invite you to events that may be going on while you're there such as weddings, open house, lunch, outings, etc. They offer a great time with wonderful people.
Volunteers who join us can help in lots of ways and all help is greatly appreciated.
The island is a beautiful and serene location, where lots of work is taking place to create a retreat for animals and humans alike. Around 70 cats, six dogs and many other animals live on the island with more to come.
If you like the great outdoors, and really do like nature, this is the perfect place for you. The island is 80% covered by jungle and is full of wildlife such as monkeys (two different species), otters, wild pigs, buffalo, sun bears, monitor lizards, eagles, civets and much more.
There are a few rooms to stay in and recently connected electricity and running water as well as a kitchen the volunteers can share.
Tasks on the island include :
- Feeding the animals in the morning and in the evening
- Keeping facilities such as clinic and nursery clean
- Giving medication to and treating the cats that need it
- Checking on and keeping animals safe in case of floods that can happen during high tide, especially in monsoon season
- Fixing and building
- Clearing grass areas to create space for and keep animals safe
- Other mini projects
Advertising and Crowdfunding
Luke would like to build awareness and raise funds for the shelter through crowdfunding online. We also have a Facebook and Instagram account so volunteers take responsibility for this and post lots of great pictures of the animals during their stay.
While there are some things that need to be done every day, this list is really just a guide to the sorts of things that you might help with. The shelter is an exciting place to be and every day is different so as long as you are prepared to help out with anything and spend time with the animals then you will have a wonderful time!

ON THE ISLAND
There are a couple of basic rooms available to volunteers and more are currently being built. We also recently got electricity installed as well as running water so now there is a shower and flushing toilet at your disposal!
The cafe area has a kitchen that has a twin gas stove, so you can cook once there. There is however only a mini fridge, so you don't have much space to keep food cold. It's best to plan ahead what you take there to cook.
The island is only a 10 minute drive from town, so it is easy to pick up daily supplies if you need to stock up while you are staying there. There are a couple of cheap supermarkets and local markets every Wednesday and Saturday to buy fresh fruit and vegetables. Pekan also has two 7-11 stores and a 2 ringgit shop which sells everything under the sun for... wait for it... just two ringgit (and 10 sen)!
There is no WiFi at the guesthouses so we recommend that you buy a Malaysian SIM card if you want to stay connected. These can be purchased from most phone shops, and decent packages start at around 30 ringgit.
If you come from Kuala Lumpur, there is a direct bus to Pekan operated by Utama Express twice a day ().
You can buy your ticket online, but they don't accept cards from banks outside Malaysia.
It's easier to buy them at TBS Terminal.
You have to ask to the driver to stop at Pekan Lama Bus Stop in Pekan, which is 3 minutes walking from the Shelter. It is best to buy your ticket at least one day in advance.
From Kuala Lumpur: you can take a bus from KL to Kuantan. And take another bus from Kuantan to Pekan.
Pekan is also in the road between Perhentian island and Tioman island so it's a good place to have some rest during your journey and to help us a few hours a day.
There is a 4-star hotel in Pekan, about 10 minutes drive away and our volunteers can use the hotel's swimming pool for free during their time or day off!
