My name is Mélissa, I'm 21 years old and and I am the founder of a free public English teaching school in Nong Khiaw in the north of Laos.
I have set up this page in order to keep the department alive. The money you donate would go towards paying for the local teachers salaries, the facilities, general maintenance and supplies such as books and pens for the children. So far, we are surviving on the generosity of the locals and volunteers who give their services for free.
In October, I planned to travel South East Asia starting with teaching at a school in Bali. During my teaching, I encountered a man who set up an organization to teach underprivileged children for free in Laos. I was inspired by his motivation to help the people of Laos due to their lower economical status and yet they still must pay for education. This inspired me to set up a non-profit organization to help the children of Laos develop their English speaking to create greater job prospects for them in order to keep up with the growing tourism industry S.E Asia is experiencing.
Through hard work and many discussions with the educational office in Nong Khiaw, we were able to set up an English department in Nong Khiaw Secondary School. We were lucky enough that the local people in Nong Khiaw were as passionate as we were in developing the children’s education to open many doors for them leading to new opportunities.
After opening our first classroom to the local children, word of my organization got around and it became more popular. The first hurdle I faced was due to the increased volume of children wanting to learn English, so we had to renovate an old, unused part of the school into a suitable classroom to accommodate the number of children. With a higher volume of children, this meant we needed a larger number of volunteers which meant we had to build further facilities such as bungalows and a kitchen for the volunteers to use.
We currently hold English classes five afternoons per week. We've had over 150 students register in September 2019 !

As an exchange, the volunteers will have the opportunity to learn about the Lao culture, Lao language, Lao food and explore the untouched nature.
The visitors will have time to interact with the children who come from different tribes.
We currently have two options of volunteering :
OPTION 1 : Help out and teach English at a local school (2 weeks minimum, free accommodation)
Come aboard for an extraordinary human experience. Volunteering positions are great for people of all ages, from recent college graduates to retirees seeking meaningful opportunities to share their knowledge and experience.
Volunteers don't necessarily need experience in working with children and English teaching. We are looking for open-minded volunteers with a responsible attitude and a willingness to help, who are interested in sharing knowledge and stories. We would love to learn about your culture and teach you about the Lao culture as well.
Students are excited to meet English speakers from all over the world.
ENGLISH LESSONS DAILY SCHEDULE
Our English classes are separated in 9 groups. At the beginning of the week we will attribute to each volunteer 3 groups that you will teach during the week.
Volunteers are divided in two teams and teach only 3 hours per day from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM, supported by our Lao teachers.
COMMUNICATION, MANAGING PARTNERSHIP & COLLECTING FUNDS
Volunteers are responsible of the marketing aspect of the school like managing campaign to publicize the association and allow the recruitment of new volunteers (short and long term) through the management of social networks and the various specialized sites.
Volunteer are in charge of the commercial aspect necessary to the fundraising, optimizing the learning conditions of the children (crowdfunding campaign, search for new partnerships, promotions of the ancillary activities of the school (Ex: sale of bamboo straws ....).
GENERAL MAINTENANCE OF THE SITE
-Weeding, planting and watering the garden
-Designing and building furniture for the school
-Bamboo straws packaging
YOUR PERSONAL TOUCH
Everyone has something special in itself and is able to bring something new for the school. You are more than welcome to involve yourself with your own project idea.
Students are interested in learning about different cultures and languages through drawing, singing, dancing and playing music... also enjoy exploring current technology, like laptops and ipads etc.
Everything you think can be appreciated and valuing for the students.
OPTION 2 : Admin help for organization (1 position available, 3 months minimum stay, free food and accommodation)
We have been fortunate enough to have many volunteers come and help with the teaching aspect of the project, whereas I have taken more of an administrative role in order to develop and organize the project. Unfortunately, we are experiencing a lack of funding, meaning I am going to have to find additional paid work for myself to contribute to the economic demands of keeping this program running. As a result, I am in search of a volunteer to take on some of the administrative responsibilities I have been in control of. Responsibilities would include, organizing and taking care of other volunteers, thinking of and planning different methods of fundraising for the project. Including one of our existing methods, which is a fundraising party on Saturday evenings.
Ideally, we would require someone to take on these responsibilities for around 3 months, as this would allow you to get to know the project and be able to contribute efficiently and feel comfortable with the current team. However, I understand there are complications with visas if you are international, so we can be flexible with duration of your stay. Currently the work would be unpaid, as all funds raised for the project go towards the outgoing costs of keeping the project up and running, such as electricity and equipment for the students. Housing and food, however, will be provided during your stay. We are hoping to find someone as passionate as our current team are about the project and offering these underprivileged children better opportunities in their lives.
English, Lao, French
Helping Monday to Friday with the children is very fulfilling but also challenging. On Saturday afternoon, we offer different types of activities for children and teenagers to balance learning the English language and having fun (painting, photography, dance, music, treks, theater, conversation classes...). Activities are chosen and organized by volunteers and teachers during the week.
Volunteers have Sunday off to relax or visit the surrounding area. For those willing to get out and explore, there are nearby caves, waterfalls viewpoints, treks, swimming-pool, boat trips, kayak, meditation etc...
