Te Nohoaka o Tukiauau / is regarded as the largest and most important privately owned wetland in New Zealand!
Wetlands are now really rare, New Zealand has sadly destroyed more that 90% of these important eco-systems, they have been drained, filled and replaced with farmland and settlements. As people, we really need wetlands, they filter water, protect us from flooding and erosion. Wetlands host more wildlife than any other habitat type, 30% of our native freshwater fish, nearly a quarter of our native birds and over 450 native plants species live in wetlands! Wetlands are culturally very significant and were used by Maori as Mahinga Kai sites (gathering grounds)

In exchange for accommodation we require helpers for maintenance, up keep and enhancement of this wetland.
This is managed by a non profit organisation (Charitable Trust - not a business) therefore we are unable to provide food, transport or any luxuries like wi-fi etc. (However, we can provide kharma credits an amazing experience and feel good factor!)
By choosing an exchange here your help will have a positive environmental impact! Along the way you will discover what it's like to live as a kiwi and what makes conservation in N.Z. so unique. Vol

Volunteering at the wetlands can include:
Native tree planting, weed eradication, predator trapping, track maintenance, , weed releasing, nursery and plant work, grounds keeping etc.

Come and enjoy staying in a peaceful and important conservation environment. Volunteers stay in the visitor accommodation wing, this house is basic but well equipped, it is quiet and private with a wonderful outlook over the wetland! (it can be cold at times, especially in winter - please come prepared!)

Your host Glen is the only staff member and works full time to look after the wetland. Glen and his partner Chantal live on-site (next door) in the managers flat. Glen and Chantal are not the owners of the wetland, Glen is employed to carry out the restoration the programme and the Trust appreciates your help! Glen and Chantal enjoy nature, outdoor sports and activities, photography, art, good food and encouraging a sustainable world!

We are 50km from Dunedin set among rural farms on the Taieri Plains (close to the airport) Allow 35 minutes drive from Dunedin city.

*️️️️️️️Please come prepared for working in the outdoors, and the willingness to live in a conservative manner - when planning an exchange please try arrange your timing to begin on a MONDAY (we take on new volunteers each Monday)

We would really appreciate your help so please don't hesitate to get in touch! :)
