Twenty years ago when living in Sydney, living the corporate life, we decided to make a vine change, moving from suburban Sydney to rural Barossa. A decision we have never regretted.
We run a small beef cattle farm in the Barossa Valley as well as a large country house guesthouse with gardens, 36 tree fruit orchard plus a vegetable garden.
We are located just outside the town of Lyndoch, at the Southern end of the Barossa. We are about 60 minutes from Adelaide by road and rail. The local railway station is Gawler, 10 minutes away. We often use rail to go to Adelaide as it's cheaper than paying Adelaide parking.
We are situated on a hillside overlooking the Barossa, surrounded by vineyards, wineries and farmland, with arguably some of the best views in the Barossa Valley.
We are an easy going family with two grown up children who drop in every so often, plus a Golden Retriever named Sargent.
When we are not running the guesthouse, we are working the farm and gardens. The cattle are Black Angus plus a couple of stragglers from when we ran a vealer production unit. Vealer production in Australia is nothing like that of Europe.
We are minimum intervention farmers but use a lot of cell grazing. Much of our thinking comes from people like Andre Voisin and Joel Salatin. We are in the process of building an egg mobile.
Being in the Barossa means we are pretty passionate about our food and wine so our guests don't go hungry or thirsty! We would ask that you understand that we are not in a position to cater for vegetarians.
We have been fortunate to host many fantastic Workaways who we now call our boomerang workaways as they keep returning, much to our delight.

We are a well travelled family so we enjoy people from all parts of the globe staying with us. At the heart of a stay with us is respect and a sense of mutual obligation. The more you contribute to life here, the more you'll get out. If all you want to do is your 4 hours then you're probably going to learn half as much as those who might offer to put in a 5 hour day. You can choose to be as much a part of the family as you wish. We are very sociable people who regularly entertain and love it if our Workaways choose to join in.
The work here is varied but not difficult. However, in the words of Joel Salatin we like Workaways who are "Bright eyed, bushy-tailed, self-starter, eager-beaver, situationally aware, go-get-em, teachable, positive, non-complaining, grateful, rejoicing, get’er done, dependable, faithful, perseverant, take-responsibility, clean-cut boy-girl appearance characters."
Farm work can include moving cattle and yard work, fencing and cleaning water troughs. Lots of gardening in our garden and orchard with pruning, planting and irrigation. General help, when required. in the house is always greatly appreciated by Jane.
The work here now won't qualify for 2nd year visas because of the changes to the rules. However, the experience and skills taught by us have certainly led to our Workaways getting jobs in hospitality and farming. This requires you to have appropriate working clothes and footwear because the work will be hard on your regular clothes. Please don't arrive here with nothing but Nike's because they will be destroyed before you know it! We can take you to a shop to buy this type of clothing and footwear which you can use elsewhere on your working holiday.
Generally our Workaways stay in one of our guest house suites with ensuite bathroom. On rare occasions you might have to move into the main homestead for a short time. There are spare bedrooms in the main homestead available with queen and single beds and big built in wardrobes. There is a large ensuite bathroom next to them with a full size bath.
We generally have a car available to get around the Barossa but you must be able to provide an international drivers licence and acknowledge the insurance excess.
The Barossa is arguably the world's favourite Australian wine region. And probably it's most famous. However, it is also known more recently for it's food as well. It was settled by Silesians who escaped religious persecution from an area now occupying parts of Poland, Germany and Russia. There is a rich history to be discovered as well as great food and wine!
