Helping Students Through English in Klaten, Indonesia
Hello good people! Let me introduce my self My name is Rani, I am the leader of the team. We stand in a small town in Klaten,Central Java. We are consist of English teachers, local guides, and people who care about our students and the future of education in our town.
My team includes Myself, Rani I am working at government school as a teacher, Mrs. Heni she was my teacher in Senior High School 28 years ago, and now she is the principal of a school. Another member is Alga he works for the government in tourism department. He is also manages a batik cultural class and cycling tour for people all over the world. We have a simple dream for our young generation that is motivate students to be able in speaking English with confidence and prepare their future with English
Students
The students of my school come from middle to low-income families. Our school is supported by the government it is a free school. Some of the parents working at the market as a seller and working as a farmer. They have less facilities at home. To get a good English class in a city is quite expensive. I was thinking how to help students to improve their English skills. I was so Happy that someone told me about workaway.
Our Goals
We want to help students by improving their English in speaking, reading, listening, and writing. Let them to see the world by meeting volunteers from different countries. Motivate them to pursue higher education or global careers.
We are looking for
Volunteers who speak English. It does not matter where you come from. The most important thing is you have a warm heart to spend a few hours with our students, share with them your travel experiences. Giving motivation to learn English, Playing some games to show them that learning English is always fun. If you want to sing with them we are so happy to do that, because we love to sing. We accept volunteers with any jobs. Let’s have fun together.
In Exchange
As a thank you, we will invite you to experience the true beauty of our town and its surroundings far from the usual tourist path. Klaten is a peaceful area located between Yogyakarta and Solo, making it the perfect base to explore Java's culture and nature.
Here’s what we love to share with our guests:
1. Visits to Prambanan Temple and Borobudur temple and other hidden local temples
2. Learn traditional arts Batik
3. Experience shadow puppets and gamelan music
4. Cycling tours through native villages and rice fields
5. See buffaloes working in the fields & meet local farmers
6. Join in the process of making tofu (tahu) and rice noodles (soon)
7. Swim in some clean spring water pools
8. Dine at a floating restaurant with mountain views
9. Bahasa Class (if you are interest to learn my language)
10. Cooking Class ( cooking some tradisional dishes like nasi goreng, sop ayam, pisang goreng)
We hope by joining our project students get good impacts. Make a real difference in students' lives. Volunteers get Experience authentic Indonesian culture, create unforgettable memories and connections. People will be our family member not a tourist
Where is Klaten :
Klaten is a regency in Central Java province, situated between the major cities of Yogyakarta and Solo. It is 45 minutes from Yogyakarta and 30 minutes from Solo by train.

Volunteers Activities :
Minimum stay: 2 weeks
Main activity: Helping local students improve their English communication skills
Teaching time: Around 3 hours per day, 5 days a week it is about 15 hours per week ( school’s days from Monday to Saturday) but we can discuss and change if you have something to do.
Sunday is time for exploring the cities and visit some tourism places, but we can also manage a visit after class.
When you're not teaching, we’ll guide you to explore local culture and history.
You'll have the chance to:

Volunteering with us is not only about teaching. It’s about immersing yourself in daily life, connecting with locals, and becoming part of our community. We don’t want you to just visit Klaten — we want you to live it.

Help Our Students Speak English with Confidence!
We are looking for fluent English speakers who can help our shy students open their mouths and speak! Even just a few hours of your time each day we believe it can make a big impact for our students.
In Class you’ ll
Make conversation with the students. In our class usually students will introduce themself one by one, telling about hobbies and family. Asking some questions with different topics. Encourage them to speak without fear, Share stories about your culture and life, Help build their confidence and fluency.
Your creativity is welcome!
If you have any fun, interactive, or unique teaching methods, games, songs, storytelling, role-plays, or conversation ideas we’d love to learn from you. Many of our students are eager but shy, so anything that helps them relax and speak. We don’t require teaching experience just a friendly with a warm heart and good attitude.
What should to wear in Class ?
Teaching attire must be appropriate for the school environment. We typically wear long-sleeved shirts and long skirts or trousers. We'd appreciate it if you could dress appropriately.

Accommodation with a Local Host in Klaten
Depending on the situation, we may not be able to host guests directly at our school. Instead, we arrange comfortable homestay accommodation with trusted community members in the Klaten area.
During your stay in Klaten, you'll be welcomed by our lovely host, Mr. Sumartono (Tono) — a kind and caring member of our community who has opened his home to support our program and help guests feel at home.
What will you get ?
A private room with basic furniture (bed, fan, table, etc.) A shared bathroom with the host family. Access to a kitchen if you’d like to cook. Delicious home-cooked meals are available, or you can buy your own food. The house is close to markets, minimarkets, and supermarkets, making shopping easy. Daily transport to school is done by motorbike with our team
Mr. Tono is friendly, experienced, and loves meeting people from different countries. He enjoys sharing local culture and may even invite you to join family meals or community activities.
You will get breakfast in the morning at the house and you will get lunch at school after classes. For dinner you can try local foods nearby which is very cheap. Another option we can cook together at home
Noted : We are living in a very simple house, we don’t have air con in our house but we have fan. The bath room is also very simple we don’t have a shower we use a dipper to bath. I hope you can understand the situation
How do you get to Klaten ?
We’ll help you every step of the way, If you come by plane fly to Yogyakarta International Airport or to Adi Sumarmo International Airport in Solo from Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, or Denpasar (Bali).
From the Yogyakarta International Airport, please take a train to Tugu Station in Yogyakarta. Then take a local tran to Klaten station. The ticket is about 8K and you need about 30 minutes to reach Klaten.
From Adi Sumarmo International Airport in Solo there is a train station please take a train to Solo Balapan Station. From Solo Balapan take a train to Klaten station. You wll need 3 minutes and the ticket is about 8K.
Just contact me when you arrive we’ll be happy to pick you up at the station.

Visit Prambanan Temple – the tallest Hindu temple in Indonesia.Visit Plaosan Temple – a beautiful blend of Hindu and Buddhist architecture, rich with history. Tour Jogja City – see the Sultan’s Palace, Taman Sari Water Castle, and museums
3. Enjoy Nature & Water Adventures
Cokro Water Park – a fun, relaxing destination with fresh water. Umbul Ponggok – snorkel in clear spring water with fish and take underwater photos. River Rafting at Goa Pindul – float through caves and enjoy the natural beauty. Hike Nglanggeran Ancient Volcano (Gunung Purba) – a short trek with incredible views
4. Learn Traditional Arts & Skills
Play the Gamelan – traditional Javanese music with local musicians, practice traditional dance – join our Sunday dance classes, make traditional trafts – learn how to create: batik (wax-resist dyeing), lurik (traditional weaving), gerabah (pottery)
5. Experience Local Life
Watch how tofu (tahu) and noodles (soon) are made in local factories, cycle through local villages – see daily life, farming, and rice fields, eat at a Floating Restaurant – enjoy delicious food with a mountain view, attend traditional events – join weddings, carnivals, and Independence Day celebrations
