Beschreibung
Hi, we are Jáchym and Kačka and we live in the north of Bohemia near the Bohemian Switzerland in Chřibská. After spending our twenties volunteering at farms and homesteads both in Czech republic and abroad, we have rooted ourselves, and for the past eight years we are transforming a place of our own. In our lives, we are drawn to agriculture, crafts and greater contact with nature, so we moved here from Prague and are creating a new place to live. Alongside our two children (7 and 4) who live here permanently, we open our home to visitors, friends and volunteers and we are happy when people feel welcome and accepted.
Transforming an old neglected place in the Sudetenland is not a job for two parents with two small kids. We need help to get things moving. The activities are diverse: We raise two wild boys, dozen well behaved chickens, two over-friendly sheep, starting with bees soon. We create vegetable beds, build wooden structures, sow seeds, shape the terrain and the stream in the garden, cut and prune, dig, dredge, clear, sort, drive a tractor, cut, mow, mulch, chip, change handles, grind, top up, sweep, make... Something every day. We are still learning, but we already know a lot of things and are happy to pass them on.
Káča is involved in permaculture, designs gardens and landscape projects, sprouts, plants, grows, seeds, tries out various procedures and, on top of that, she cooks well and is a great mother.
Jachym deals with machines, he found out that anything can be taken apart and usually repaired, he works with wood, for which he gradually acquires various tools and instruments, learns to weld, invent, mechanize, and put things into operation. He has encountered joinery, carpentry, masonry, water and electricity distribution, and overall reconstruction. And he is a father of two boys.Arten von Hilfe und Lernmöglichkeiten

Kultureller Austausch und Lernmöglichkeiten
There are mostly Czech people comming and going, so it is a good chance to meet some. We don´t have very large local network of close friends yet, although through craft and building in general there is a lot of connections forming. Authentic experience offered - mostly no English language whatsoever.
We speak fluent English, some French, and very passive (actually practicaly nonexistent) German. Our main goal now is not to teach or learn languges, though we like to talk a lot, discuss things and are happy to give enough effort for the communication to happen. We would love if you could talk to our kids any other language than Czech.
When you work alongside Jachym, he will teach woodwork and by now basics of most jobs around a household. He is a precise, organized and technical guy when working, and a great party organizer on time off. Sometimes these two categories mix up, but there is always a great eager to get things done and genuine joy in hardworking.
Kacka is a permaculture designer, partly working on other projects as a job, partly still learning and practicing all the theory on the 10 000m2 garden. She can teach you how to grow vegetables on larger scale, all about composting and soil health. She grows many varieties of willow for basketry and living willow structures and can share that.
Together we learn about our farm animals on the go. And about our kids too. We take parenting seriously, try to learn about ourselves (most important part of parenting) and get educated and inspired in children´s psychology and development. We are happy to talk about it, share the intimate family reality. You are welcome to join in the „village“ that it takes to raise our children well.
Honest, open and non-violent communication above all! We are used to host people at home and to negotiate everybody´s needs. If you find it hard to talk about things or give/recieve constructive feedback or you are not willing to try, it might be a reason for ending your stay. Communal living requires communcation.Projekte mit Kindern

Arbeit
The general approach we have is that you do what you like doing, what you are good at and what brings you joy. We don´t want to force you to do anything you really hate. On the other hand - challenging oneself builds stamina and not so fancy jobs, when shared, create a feeling of togetherness against the enemy and great satisfaction when the job is done. One lesson from having a homestead and land:-)
We don´t require you to be expert on anything, however some experience with physical work and tools is welcome.
We believe that someone looking to live in the countryside one day wanting to try it out and learn the reality of it would enjoy the stay the most. Another type of happy volunteer would be one with passion for building, which is a big 2025 goal. Someone into gardening and regenerative agriculture would free Kacka´s hands so she can help with the building projects (quality time with her husband) or go out in the woods (quality time with the kids). If you want to cook, clean and babysit, by all means, however we realize that this is usualy not something people travel to other countries for. Help in general run of the house is much appricated but not required.
Specific jobs vary through out the season. There is pretty much anything you can think of.
General maintanance: mowing the grass and cutting the bushes, feeding and cleaning animals, gathering and layering of compost piles, weeding the vegetables, chopping wood for heating, cleaning, repairing and sharpening tools etc.
Kids: They are typical country viking boys. They love to deconstruct anything, build things out of scrap metal and wood that they steel from the workshop, set stuff on fire, make things wet that are not designed for being sogged etc. They love outdoors and they mostly enjoy visitors after few hours or a day of getting to know them, although they don´t have much experience with interacting in different language. If you feel like taking them out for a bike ride, go up to the woods to pick raspberries or to go hiking and climbing in the rocky national park, that can be part of your hours. We are also happy to help communicate private space for you so they don´t go too much across any of your boudaries. They are in process of learning that in life and we will be gratefull for you to give them chance to practice:-) If you don´t want to be in contact with kids at all, please don´t come - they can´t be turned off (we found out).
HOURS: We love to organize our time and at the same time we don´t have very strict routine. Generally we like to make a deal about tomorrows work the evening before. We start working together on projects from 9:00 and after lunch depending on what job you´re doing, you can give it a final hour to finish it off, clean, put the tools away and such. If there is a bigger shortterm project on the site, that needs to get done (like lining the pond with oak timber, which means all hands possible and the water pump runs constantly), we would appreciate if you could give us a full day of help and then take a full day off, or help for three days and then have four days off. Everything depends on your physical abilities, happines and stamina, of course. We always make a plan for such things beforehand (even couple of days), make sure everybody is ok with it and hear everybody´s needs.Gesprochene Sprachen

You will stay in a nice new cosy wooden vagon. It is insulated and has heating and electricity, but no water. It is a bedroom / study / private chill space. There is a kettle to boil water for tea and such. No bathroom or toilet or kitchen. There is a 140cm bed, so ideal for a couple or very comfortable for one. With a little bit of moving things around there is also a setup of the vagon suitable for two separate people.
You can use a bathroom in the main house which is under reconstruction, there is a toilet, sink, shower and hot water on the tap. It is a little untidy sometimes, as it´s also used as toilet by anyone who is working on the house (dirty shoes), so it is not yours only space. Friends staying with us for months making the roof last year were ok with it and with a little bit more frequent clening it´s fine and homey.
We have only one kitchen in the small house we live in now as a family, and Kacka prefers to cook in it herself. We will feed you nutritious healthy vegetarian / vegan food throughout the day. You are welcome to buy and cook any additional food/drinks you personally need on the terrace of the vagon on a camping cooker that we can provide (with a lovely view). You will have your fridge in the mainhouse. Shops and restaurants are in walking / cycling distance. Was noch ...
When you google the National Park Ceske Svycarsko, there you have it, we are close to everything. Spring-Autumn there is a decent bus service going to the most beautifull places in the Park several times a day, we can lend you a bike or you can walk. There are interesting little alternative arty / café places in the middle of nowhere, it´s a glass making region with chances of visits into the manufacturing (Chribska has oldest glass factory in Europe dating back to 1414!). The area is generally best enjoyed outdoors in the nature. No big cities, no ancient architecture and concert / theatre halls, you can imagine.
Chribska has 1300 inhabitants, a school, a post office, four grocery shops open 7days/week (thank you dear Vietnamese community), several pubs, a café and a bakery. There is a bus service every hour to go to bigger towns, it is a 2,5 hours commute to Prague. We live 15 minute walk from the square and bus services.

Last but not least - we are concious about what info and content about us and our home goes online, specially social media. We do not invite anybody who is a youtuber / content creator and wants to share our place online. You are welcome to take pictures to show your mum what your doing - kind of, but we would rather you share the least of us and this place on social platforms. Thank you very much.Etwas mehr Information
