Beschreibung
We own a beautiful and remote property in far north Queensland. We also manage the property next door to us and adjoin Mowbray National Park, so if you like nature, lots of space, peace and quiet, then we might be the place for you. We are fully off grid -- solar power, pump our own water and grow a lot of our own food. We manage our property purely for maximum biodiversity outcomes and use it for research, education and conservation. The property is not farmed. It is half rainforest and half dry land ecosystems and we have many walking tracks and swimming holes you are welcome to enjoy. We also have platypus in the creek for those keen to spot one of Australia’s coolest animals and wallabies chilling on our front lawn every day at dawn and dusk.
The help is usually 2hrs in the morning and 2hrs in the afternoon (4hrs daily) in exchange for three wholesome meals a day, accommodation and satellite wifi.

Marcus and I are both educators, both teaching university study abroad groups (25yrs experience), presenting interactive school workshops and leading tour groups. Marcus's university background is in geology and botany and Claire's specialties are in entomology, zoology, taxonomy and genetics. We can usually answer most questions thrown our way and if we don't know the answer. we are more than happy to do some research and find it. In fact we enjoy learning new things, so don't be afraid to ask us stuff. :-) Our property is remote and very quiet, so best suited for those wanting to escape city life and be surrounded by nature.
If there is a community event on, we make an effort to go and take our volunteers along too (eg local markets, fundraising events, solstice etc..).

We accept volunteers for one week stays as we take that week off our normal work when you are here. Ie we will all be 'volunteering' on eco-projects.
We ask for 4hrs of daily help alongside us as a very fair exchange for wholesome meals, your own private space, wi-fi and access to beautiful, private, natural surroundings with lots of native wildlife like wallabies and pademelons. In your free time, volunteers can go swimming, enjoy many of the hikes on and around our property (plus we adjoin 8,000ha/20,000acres of National Park) and meet/spend time with our animals, read , meditate, do yoga/fitness, bird watching, platypus watching, satellite wifi or watch movies and chill out. We have a lot of info on our page, mainly so we get the right people applying to volunteer here.
The tasks are usually physical (ie no cute animal feeding – that`s in your free time if you express an interest to Claire), but we offer a very fair exchange for those motivated to contribute their 4hrs of daily help. You don`t have to have prior experience, but must be willing to help out during the agreed times. We don`t want surprises on either side and we’ve had a few in the past, so please read it if you want to be prepared for a volunteer experience with us. 🙂 Non-smokers only, including vapes.

Unterkunft
You`ll either be in the main house with us, or have your own living space up at the “Cortex’/wilderness bunkhouse, a beautiful set of open-air buildings with your own cooking and bathroom facilities. Both the main house and Cortex are fully off-grid (ie solar power, we pump spring water for the house and use composting toilets, satellite internet) so you need to be energy conscious. ie absolutely no hair dryers, straightening irons or hot brushes or other high energy things. We don`t have a microwave or electric kettle, so you`ll need to get used to cooking with gas. We also expect you to turn off lights etc. Living off-grid has become an increasingly popular thing post covid and we’re more than happy to talk you through how we achieved this 25yrs ago.
Three healthy meals/ingredients are provided daily. Volunteers will need to prepare their own breakfasts and lunches daily from our garden (incl fresh eggs) and walk-in pantry. We have a vegetable garden in which we grow a variety of normal and some very unusual vegetables that we use in our cooking whenever we can. If you have an adventurous pallet you`ll find yourself looking forward to dinner (Claire or Marcus will cook dinner for everyone) and the new ingredients you won`t find in supermarkets. If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know well before you arrive so we can cater for you. We typically incorporate a bit of dairy and our own fresh organic (happy!) eggs in our food, but if we have one vegan/vegetarian in the group we’ll all go vegan/vego for the week to keep it simple. If you need crisps/chips/chocolate or extra snacks we suggest you bring your own stash with you as we don`t have this kind of junk food in our pantry. Bring your own beer/wine/cider if you like a drink at the end of the day. Marcus is a non-drinker and Claire usually has a glass of wine with dinner.
Breakfast and lunch will be self-serve (cooked or cold – it’s up to you) and dinner will be a shared meal with everyone.

Internet use: We have satellite internet, powered by solar. It's on each day from 6.30am-midnight.
Mobile Phones: There is telstra mobile coverage up on top of the lookout track – we are remote. You are welcome to walk up to the lookout whenever you like.
Getting to us:
The transnorth Cooktown route bus from Cairns goes to Mt Molloy on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings (leaves Cairns early in the morning and arrives at Mt Molloy at 8,10am), if you are coming on another day of the week you can get the transnorth Atherton route bus to Mareeba which is a 45 minute drive from our property. We can also arrange to pick you up from Port Douglas if you are coming from the north.
