Help Us Educate the Slum Children and Youth in South Delhi.
We are an education based organization ,where we work with the Urban Slum dwelling children of Delhi to educate and get them out of poverty. We are serving 10 slum clusters for the economically weaker areas of the South Delhi. Most of the parents are non-literate and daily wagers. They are engaged in occupations such as, Electricians, House Painters, Auto-Rickshaw Drivers, Vegetable Vendors, Tailors, Garbage Collectors, Scrap Dealers, Mothers as Housemaids, Security Guards.
The founder, Mohan Kadambavanam used to walk the slum streets and tried to bridge the gap with many of the children by playing cricket and badminton. In 2014 a devastating fire broke in the slums and many houses were destroyed, so Mohan saw the need for help and provided a safe environment for the children so they could learn and feel welcomed. From starting with one room, 35 children and 8 computers we now have 6 rooms, 40 computers and 600+ students! so the demand is rising and with that we need more help and love from teachers and volunteers.
We wish to see the change in children's lives through education and we need all the help we can get. Any native English speakers are welcome (British/Canadian/American), preferably with ESL background but not a must.
We are also looking for professional fund raiser (writing funding proposals). Nationality no bar.
You can find yourself teaching English from a curriculum to practicing conversations in English which will help them develop their communication skills and confidence.
I offer my own home as accommodation, in a safe cosy flat with 2 bedrooms and a living room. Its located in Malviya Nagar, near Select City Walk Mall. We don't have a cook so we take turn cooking or cook together so your cooking skills could come to use.
Sometime we have shortage of water and electricity ( this being India) so kindly be patient because this is out of our hands but we try our best to provide what we can.
We request a servant heart and not a demanding attitude just because you choose to volunteer with us. We don't have generators (as some demand) due to shortage of funds so please don't ask why can't we get it. It's not as easy as asking. We are more than grateful for this opportunity however, we're here to serve the children just like you.
We charge a small free of 350 rupees per day in order to take care of accommodation and food.

If you choose to volunteer with the Project, you will get to 1) spend alot of time with the children and interact with them 2) develop friendships, 3) get a lot of Indian culture exposure 4) pick up on Indian language and above all 5) make a difference to the slum children you will be surrounded with and build on existing experience. Learn the needs and struggles of the underprivileged and why they have it and the opportunities that they lack, in areas of education, aspiration to succeed in life. It would be a hands on experience so come with an open mind to learn of the unknown and teach what you can. It's a great opportunity to experience cross culturaral dynamics.
We require native English speakers, ESL teachers, fundraisers (writing proposals), English teachers and those good with children and youth, can connect with them teaching Spoken English, alternative and creative ways to teach English.
Also, please learn to carry your weight around and be as helpful as possible and not be expected to treat like a guest/waited upon all the time.
Humbleness will be your best virtue.

You will have a shared space (depending on how many volunteers will be staying at the moment), there is a living room that you can chill in, we have one bathroom in the apartment, two bedrooms but one of them is occupied by the host and the other is available to stay in along with the living room.
There is a charge of 350 rupees per day per person to cover food and accommodation.
The apartment is situated next to a 1100 hundred yr old monument and that's pretty cool. You will be staying with one of the volunteers and will commute to and fro from work location.
There's CCTV cameras for safety and gates get locked at night so it's absolutely safe.
Your time here will be very rewarding even though intensive and tiring. Working with children requires a lot of energy and initiated hard work. Change comes from sacrifice of time and energy and our organization is serious about change for the less privileged than we are. This isn't just a one way street though, the kids in turn are very great ful and reciprocate with all their affection. In your free time, you can visit lots of places, explore in and around delhi, hang out with the host, explore the endless monuments eg:- red fort, qutub minar, lotus temple, akshardham, humayun tomb, chandni chowk (main bazaar, market place), Jama masjit (near red fort), and lots more.
If you're on the high end, we can also show you the malls and some of the other places like the restaurants, etc.
