We're looking for good-hearted and enthusiastic volunteers to help teach spoken English at our all-girls high school.
Our high school opened in 1993, at a time when many local families didn't want to send their daughters to school. As well as requiring young girls to take care of the home and their siblings while their parents were at work, families were also concerned that having educated daughters would mean they would have to pay a higher dowry when they were to be married. Before the school opened, most young girls from the surrounding tribal villages received no education and were married very young. Didi, the school's principal, did a lot of work in the local community to change attitudes towards girls' education and there are now 155 girls attending the school, 83 of whom board here.
The school is based in the small village of Khatanga, where there are also a number of neighbouring projects run by our women's empowerment organisation, Uma Nivas, including a children's home, a primary school, an upper high school, a boy's home, a music college, a yoga centre and a medical unit. We are also working on building a women's college which we hope will be finished in December 2019.
We have eight members of staff teaching at our school who are all from the local area, but it can be difficult to find local teachers who are fluent in English. Good spoken English is a vital skill to help our girls progress onto further education and to get good jobs, so we are looking for native or fluent speakers to help out.
Please get in touch with Didi if you have any questions or to arrange your visit. We can't wait to meet you!

You are very welcome to join in the morning meditation and yoga sessions led by either the teachers or the students, and we will be happy to show you around the local area. There are very few tourists here, so you will get a chance to experience real life in Khatanga and to learn about our unique culture. If you want, we can also teach you Bengali and you can join music and dance classes.
We can be flexible on working days and schedules but ideally would like someone who can take classes between 9am - 12pm, six days a week with Sundays as rest days. Our classes range from 10-years-old to 17-years-old with mixed abilities.
Please note: We are only able to accept female volunteers or couples. We also primarily need volunteers between September and March when school is in session.

In exchange, we can offer you a private room and bathroom with running water and a western-style toilet. There is no wifi in the area but we can help you buy an Indian sim card and mobile data is very affordable. We provide three, home-cooked meals a day (our diet is fully vegetarian with no eggs, onions or garlic) and can also provide snacks in the afternoon. The water at the school is filtered but we will also provide bottled water for volunteers.
Please be aware that you cannot bring alcohol or cigarettes into the school.
If you'd like to speak to our former volunteers, send us a message and we would be happy to put you in touch.
