Welcome to our sustainable farm in the beautiful Poiana Ruscai region of Romania. Our farm is a haven for organic farming and sustainable living, and we invite you to join us and experience the joys of farm life while contributing to our sustainable farming practices.

As a volunteer on our farm, you will have the opportunity to learn new skills, experience a different culture, and make new friends. Tasks may include planting and harvesting crops and helping with general maintenance, and this year we will be focusing on fencing the property, which will be physically intensive work.

Please note that we now have a new addition to our farm family: a baby who takes most of our time. As a result, we may not be able to provide as much hands-on guidance or participate in activities as much as we used to. We appreciate your understanding and willingness to work independently. Additionally, we are often away from the farm for 2-3 days to take the baby to health checks, and we prefer volunteers who are experienced in being on their own on the farm.

We offer accommodation and meals, and as of now, volunteers will need to cook their own food using the ingredients provided. This is a great opportunity for volunteers to learn about local ingredients and traditional Romanian cuisine while also taking part in sustainable food practices.
We are committed to sustainability in all aspects of our farm. We use organic farming practices, and responsible waste management, and aim to reduce food waste by composting food scraps and donating excess produce to those in need.

Join us and be a part of our sustainable farming community, where you can make a positive impact on the environment and the local community, and experience the beauty of the Carpathian Mountains.

Adrian and I have moved here in 2020, after 9 years in London, to see if we can live this challenging life while, we hoped, the world was coming back to normal. We are still here, still wondering if this life is what we want. Every day, we are learning and improve by making mistakes, which we believe is the fastest way to learn. We hope to share everything we have experienced during our transition from the big city to the small village, including the challenges and rewards.

We acquired a house in the countryside in 2015, hoping to get back to our roots, but we were scared of the idea of being at the mercy of nature and eating only what we could raise and grow ourselves. However, it took a worldwide lockdown to bring us here. We have been on a journey of self-discovery and growth ever since.

We do our best to be present in the moment and true to ourselves while taking actions that lead to more sustainable living. Our goal is to positively impact the nature around us and our neighbors. We believe that living sustainably is not only beneficial for the environment but also for our overall well-being.

As we continue to navigate this challenging but rewarding life, we hope to share our experiences and lessons learned with others. We welcome volunteers from all over the world to join us in our journey towards sustainable living and help us make a positive impact on the environment and the local community.

"Our farm is nestled in the scenic Poiana Ruscai region of the Carpathian Mountains, located along the banks of the Cerna River. We reside in a small, spread-out village that is part of Lunca Cernii de Jos, a quaint town only 10 minutes away by car. The area has a rich agricultural heritage, with many small to medium-sized livestock and subsistence farms. The mountains offer breathtaking hiking opportunities, while the nearby Negoi River provides a refreshing spot for a swim, just a 2-minute walk from our house.

Our farm is conveniently located along national road DJ687D, with easy access by car or bus (there is a bus stop right in front of the farm). The village is situated 20 miles from Cincis Lake, a must-see destination during the summer months, and 30 miles from Hunedoara.

Mondays and Fridays there is a bus leaving for Hunedoara and returning in the afternoons, which you can take to visit Corvins' Castle, a very beautiful local attraction, or you can go to Fortress which is another 20 minutes away from Hunedoara. The house is surrounded by very nice farms, owned by elder farmers who love to share their experiences with anyone willing to listen.

At our farm, we grow crops primarily for our own consumption, but we also share the surplus with our neighbors and friends. We do not engage in any commercial activities, nor do we derive any income from the farm.

This year, we plan to donate our excess vegetables to a children's house in Hunedoara, as we believe in giving back to our community and reducing food waste. In the past, we've had instances where we had surplus lettuce that even our extended family couldn't consume, so we fed it to our chickens to minimize waste. However, we're aiming to be better organized this year and ensure that all our vegetables are put to good use for human consumption.

Join us and be a part of our sustainable farming community, where you can make a positive impact on the environment and the local community, and experience the beauty of the Carpathian Mountains.

During the summer season, we engage in a variety of activities including haymaking, which involves mowing grass by scythe - a hand tool with no engine. You can learn how to scythe, dry and stack hay in a special way outdoors with no cover to preserve it for winter. We take pride in not using any industrial chemicals in our hay or any part of our land. You can also participate in basic or medium woodworking, cutting wood logs and arranging them for winter. We need help with wood maintenance basic works such as painting, sanding, etc. We would also appreciate assistance in preparing homemade liquors, jams, syrups, and winter pickles. You can even participate in picking local plants to dry for tea and health purposes.

In addition to the practical tasks, we enjoy having long cultural discussions and love to share our knowledge about our wonderful country with anyone interested. We always welcome the opportunity to meet new people and learn from them as well.

We are seeking assistance with various tasks around the farm, including weeding and preserving our harvest, making hay, and chopping firewood. Additionally, we could use help in the orchard, particularly with weed control and planting new trees. There are also several ongoing construction projects that require design and building skills. If you're interested in learning about our tire structure project, you're more than welcome to participate, and it's a great workout during the cool mornings or evenings.

Volunteers will be accommodated in the same lovely old house as us, with all the comforts we enjoy. The hot water is heated by the sun, so showers are available only on hot sunny days. In case of cold weather, a small bath and a pot on the stove can be used for washing. For now, we have an outhouse, but we plan to install an indoor compost toilet soon.

We have a spare double bedroom that has a table for your laptop and two beds, one of which is a bunk bed. A group of three friends can stay together in this room. Additionally, we have an extendable couch in our living room, which can accommodate more people.

The house is heated by a wood-burning fireplace in our living room, ensuring a cozy and warm atmosphere during colder days. During the summer season, volunteers who prefer to stay in tents can pitch them in our orchard, which provides ample space. Please confirm with us beforehand if tents are available or if you need to bring your own. Basic internet access and charging facilities for phones and laptops will be available.

Our area offers a multitude of outdoor activities, including hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and caving, which we enjoy during our free time. We are also interested in learning to play the guitar and enjoy artistic pursuits like drawing and dancing.

The closest city to us, which is 45 km away, boasts one of the most impressive castles in Romania, Corvin Castle. Additionally, there is a nature reserve just 10km away that is worth visiting.

If you're interested in exploring more, there is a well-known monastery only 50km away. And for those who enjoy a day of city life, there is a bus that runs on Mondays and Fridays, providing easy access to the closest city, where you can enjoy a variety of urban activities before returning home in the evening.
