Beschreibung
My name is Dany and I am an English teacher from Indonesia. I received my master's degree in TESOL from The University of Warwick, UK in 2023. Now I live in Kendari, South East Sulawesi running my own English school.

This is an English school located in Kendari, South East Sulawesi, Indonesia. We offer English classes for children, teenagers and adults. Our services range from general English, English for business, and English tests preparation (IELTS and TOEFL). Our school is located in the heart of the city, with a great access to nearby beaches and diving spots. Kendari is also the hub to visit other tourist destinations such as Buton and Wakatobi.

We want to give an unforgettable experience to our students who learn English by giving them access to native speakers or people who speak good English from different nationalities for teaching and learning process. On the other hand, we want to promote our culture to foreigners (and learn theirs too) so that we will have a better understanding for both with the hope to make a better world community.

Was ist das?
Kultureller Austausch und Lernmöglichkeiten
Workawayers will have the chance to learn how to interact with our teachers and our students. Our program ranges from young learners to adults. We provide general English classes and English proficiency tests such as TOEFL and IELTS. We also provide scholarship preparation program for those who wish to study abroad.

Workawayers will learn how to manage the students in terms of communicating with foreigners which is a challenge because English is still considered foreign language in Indonesia. Indonesians speak Indonesian plus their local language. We can provide trainings in teaching if Workawayers don't come from teaching background.

Arbeit
We want Workawayers who speak good English to teach and interact with our students. Although it is not required, having a teaching background will be a plus since it will support the teaching and learning process. In addition, the Workawayers might be asked to provide trainings for the teachers to upgrade their teaching skills.

Occasionally we make contents on IG or Youtube for educational or promotional purposes. Our volunteers are more than welcome to appear in the photos or videos that we create.

We prepare our students' English for their future study or work. Hence we would like to welcome anyone who is fluent in English to provide a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our students before they embark on their journey to pursuit their dreams.

We provide comfy accommodation and food for the Workawayers. Food is chosen based on preference. Nearby are also food stalls with incredibly cheap prices (typically costs $2 for meal and drink of a person). We are open to discuss the amount and type of food should you have any specific request.

Online motorcycle and car cabs (GOJEK, GRAB and Maxim) are available, so it is easy to go anywhere as well as order foods should you don't want to go out. WiFi is free. Travelling to local tourism spots is also provided (agreed upon discussion).

First of all, I have to say thank you for giving me the opportunity of helping you so much, and the honor was mine to see how commited you are with the English teaching and the learning process you have in the school.

I could only stay for a week because I had to fly out from Indonesia because of the visa expiry date. I would have loved to stay… read more longer because I could tell day by day that the students were getting more and more confidence in their speaking skills and that was what we were mainly looking for.

My background is English teaching as I have been doing it for more than 10 years, so the activities and main routines were completely related to that field, so the "work" was not difficult or hard to manage. What we were mainly focusing on, was on the students' speaking skills, so we were having interviews by groups where the main focus point was "question and answer" so the students could be "really" involved in a conversation, in English, with a foreigner. It was emphasised the idea that they needed the language to be able to ask us questions, because otherwise, we wouldn't understand anything in Bahasa.

We could also join the Friday activities in the afternoon in the football field, where almost all the students from all the schools around Kampung Ingriss go and meet up to have outdoor activities related to practise their English. We also helped in another role play activity in the school where the students have to develop their speaking skills again, and the most rewarding for us was to see how they were improving in confidence just in a few days.

I was also invited to a university as a guest to talk about the importance of speaking English nowadays, we also went to another school in Surabaya where the curriculum is in English and my favourite was visiting the NGO where Mr Dany was helping, and it was amazing to see what all the teachers were doing there, teaching all those kids who can't afford paying for English lessons.

But what I enjoyed the most was the cultural interchange with the students and also the teachers and everyone in charge. Everybody was really happy and excited about us being there so there was not a single moment that we weren't talking to anybody and exchanging ideas and culture. It was also really nice to go out for breakfast of lunch or dinner and learn about their culture, their meals, desserts and fruits and what they usually have for breakfast or lunch and why. We were taking on a nice bike ride around the kampung with the students, and to two different markets: the local one really early in the morning and then on Sunday to another one where you have to pay by bamboo money!! It was really cool!!

So, I encourage everyone, not just English teachers/ teachers to go and join this school for some days and experience first hand all their culture and traditions, and at the same time you can help some students to improve their English and their confidence by speaking to foreigners and learning a lot about our cultures also. You will be helping on a tight schedule so be ready to wake up early and then go on with different activities daily, that's the funny thing because everyday is different to the next, and that makes life beautiful to be experienced.

Last but not the least, I just want to say a big thank youuuuuu to Mr Tata, Mr Dany, Mr Fian and the rest of the teachers in the school for everything you have done for me and for taking care of me as a real family.
