We are a family of 4, living in California, and have a beautiful cabin which we recently refurbished with a local builder. We want to rent it starting in the late Spring 2024, but first we would like some volunteers to provide us feedback on the place in general, and help in writing a welcome guide for guests.

This is the property where my wife grew up, and my mother in law currently lives in it; there is a guest room available for one or two volunteers (female only).

Length of stay is up to one week. We would provide accommodations, but not food. There closest market is 12km away in La Palma. A neighbor can drive you to/from La Palma, for a fee of $12USD.

The house has electricity, wifi via Starlink, A/C in each of the two bedrooms and several ceiling fans. With a thick ceiling and a tall roof, and its closeness to the mountain, the temperature is warm but pleasant.

There is a terrace with a nice view of the mountain , and from which you can watch birds and listen to wildlife as the day unfolds. Early in the morning, at about 5:00AM, you hear the howling monkeys shouting. Different types of birds start cruising across, including sea-loving "tijeretas" (the ocean is about 20km away as the crow flies), macaws and parrots, toucans, and raptors.

There are two bedrooms. One room has two single beds and a desk, and the other has a full size bed. My mother in law lives in the room with the full size bed, and we have the room with the two single beds available. Each room has a fan and a window A/C.

There are pets and a few chickens in the property, but none go inside the house.

The kitchen is well equipped, with stove and microwave, and you can use the fridge as well. There is a laundry room with washer and drier, available to use.

Water comes directly from a mountain spring via the local aqueduct and is drinkable. There is no water heater, so we only get water at ambient temperature.

Insects are under control for we have no-standing water, as the terrain is mildly sloped and highly absorbent. There are other biting insects, but it is possible to have bite-free experience so long as you follow a couple of tips, namely:

    1. Turn on the terrace ceiling fans as dusk arrives, for at that time (and only then) some sand-fly-like insects (called "purrujas") arrive. Alternatively, go inside at that time.
    2. Avoid walking on tall grass without insect repellent, for there are red mites (called "coloradillas") waiting to jump on you. They are not a problem when you go into the jungle, only near cattle and farm animals.

Snakes are not a problem in the property but it is important to be careful when crossing streams. We recommend using tall rubber boots (which we can provide) when walking in the jungle.

There is also a beach in the Golfo Dulce that is reachable by car (Playa Blanca, 12km away) and also high spots to contemplate the gulf from above, just East of Rincon. A neighbor can provide transport to these places, for a fee.

The attached photos show the interior of the house, and we have also included a couple taken at the beach and from a lookup point, places located 10 to 15 minutes by car from our place.

We expect guests to follow our house rules:

    1. No smoking or drugs
    2. Keep house, room and bathroom clean
    3. Bring their own food
    4. Wash your linens and towels when you leave

There is a neighbor on the property who occasionally visits for coffee and helps keep the surroundings clean.

To get here from San Jose, take the bus to Puerto Jimenez () and ask to be dropped off at the town of La Palma, which is 25km before Puerto Jimenez. A neighbor can pick you up, for a fee of about $12 USD. We create a Whatsapp group to arrange the details. With three food markets, La Palma is a good place to stock on food.

During their time off, helpers can visit other neighbors living in the area, one of whom works with handi-crafts, and others keep working farms. There are jungle paths where you can see miniature frogs and other species; you can also bathe in a nearby waterfall. You would need a guide for these activities, and one lives nearby. Nearby tours we can help arrange include kayaking in the Golfo Dulce, or horse-back riding along the river banks.

Further afield is Bahia Drake, which can be reached by a daily van that passes 1km from the property, and is one hour away. From there, tours can be arranged by boat to Corcovado National Park, or to Isla del Caño, or to the Sierpe river. To visit Corcovado National Park, visits need to be arranged with more than one month in advance.
