Our non-profit organization is based in a 19th century castle in the Sarthe countryside, on a 6ha plot of land near the Bercé forest, 20km south of Le Mans. The place is magnificent, very quiet and peaceful, ideal for meditation and rest, with many walks in the surrounding woods, on foot or by bike (we can lend you bicycles).
The community living here is made up of monks, nuns and lay practitioners, all practicing Buddhists, of all ages and backgrounds. We organize weekly meditation retreats (5 or 3 days retreats) and people who come to visit us can benefit from teachings and meditations through these retreats, or stay to take a break and recharge, or also come to do only voluntary activities. As a no-profit organization, anyone staying at the Center, registred or not to meditation activities, is a volunteer. The entire functionning of the Center is based on a network of volunteers. Volunteers are helping other volunteers through there volunteering activities and in this sense it is one-of-a-kind.
During your stay, you could participate (at no extra cost) in the spiritual activities that take place in the evening, as well as in the 30-minute guided meditations before lunch time. You could also participate in the practices of sung prayers with meditation in the late afternoon. PLEASE NOTE that these spiritual activities are all in FRENCH LANGUAGE only. You will need an intermediate level in French to feel confortable. At the Reception desk, you will have the opportunity to borrow a kit containing Buddhist books and an MP3 player with guided meditations (in French and in English). There is a Librairy full of Books of our Buddhism Tradition, available to all in many languages.
GOOD NEWS FOR THIS SUMMER ! A full-fledged period for a unique volunteer experience is offered to you during the International Spring Retreat hold at the Centre from June 17th to 22th, 2022 (it will be guided in English, and translated in French).

The entire functionning of the Center is based on a network of volunteers, and in this sense the project is one-of-a-kind. By participating in its proper functioning, you will have the opportunity to meet people from all over France, united in the same process: help each other, discovering the Buddhist way of life, experiencing meditation and training our mind. To benefit everyone around us, the best way is to live in harmony.
As a no-profit organization, anyone wishing to stay at the Center is a volunteer. Volunteers are helping other volunteers through there volunteering daily missions. We offer a variety of volunteer assignments that ensure the smooth running of community life and the Centre's activities. We propose activity in the kitchen area to help the cook, in the cleaning of common areas to help with governance, also in light maintenance to help with the upkeep of the Center, and also in the gardening all around the Center .
We are always interested to know the specific skills you may be able to offer. All skills are welcome so don't hesitate to share your talents with us. For example, we can ask your competencies in office tasks (typing) and in communication too on our social networks. Also we have activities in specific maintenance skills.
Although the activities are not particularly strenuous, you will need to be reasonably fit and active to participate in this volunteer trip. The missions that are offered each day is last between 2 and 3 hours, and we expect volunteer to help out for 5 hours a day on average. The Center offers volunteers 2 days off each week following its help. In this context of volunteering there is no cost for the workawayer.

In the surroundings of the Centre, you can visit the city of Le Mans: Le Mans, labelled "City of Art and History", conceals in its heart a hidden jewel: the Cité Plantagenêt. Twenty hectares of paved alleys, inhabited by pan-de-bois houses and Renaissance hotels, sheltered by a Roman wall and overhung by a cathedral. Saint-Julien Cathedral, half Romanesque, half Gothic, is also one of the largest in France (134m long for a surface area of 5000m2).
Also, the national forest of Bercé is a beautiful place to go hiking. The fruit of several centuries of silviculture, the Bercé oaks have acquired a worldwide reputation for their exceptional quality. A former royal forest intended to supply the navy, this massif now produces oaks that are sought after for cooperage. Its forests make it one of the most beautiful forests in France.
To go to Le Mans, there is a local bus but you can also ask residents or other volunteers to drive you to the train station.
To preserve peace and harmony within our Buddhist community, the consumption of alcohol, cigarettes and drugs is not permitted on the entire property. Being a Buddhist center, all meals are vegetarian (sometimes vegan) and the consumption of meat / fish is also not allowed throughout the property.
