Beschreibung
Hi, we are the Toews’! My name is Ali and my husbands name is Michael! We are both in our late 20’s. I’ve been running this farm for 8 years and Michael joined the homestead 2 years ago, when we got hitched. We are extremely passionate about animals and farming and I can talk for hours about them (Michael is a great listener!). We care deeply about health and animal welfare and we like to focus on Intentional and low impact farming.
We raise heritage sheep, heritage and meat turkeys, meat and layer chickens, heritage forest raised pigs, wagyu and angus cattle, and dairy cattle on the farm! We also have mini pigs, dogs (both guardian and pet), cats, a donkey, highland cows, rabbits and horses! The animals are our family and we make sure any volunteer who joins us will treat them with kindness and respect. We focus on natural/sustainable practices, animal welfare and environmental impact. Our farm also plays a major role in our community, educating people on the importance of limiting food miles, and helping connect consumers to producers.
Come visit us in beautiful Fawn Lake, British Columbia, and become a part of our 2 legged and 4 legged family! We love sharing knowledge about homesteading, animal care, carpentry/building, basic veterinary care, sustainable farming and more. This would be a great learning experience for anyone interested in those topics, or someone who wants to start their own homestead one day!

Kultureller Austausch und Lernmöglichkeiten
We have lots of information and skills to share with you! We have learned from our mistakes, advanced our farming towards automated and efficient design, and focus on natural and sustainable farming practices with the animals, food quality and environmental impact in mind. We are also in a very culturally rich area, full of history and natural beauty.

Arbeit
Other than the normal day-to-day care of animals, milking cows, feeding sheep, and playing with the babies (eek!), we plan and build paddocks, shelters and barns for efficiency and health of the animals, install fences, cut down/clear trees, collect and stack firewood, repair fencing and shelters as needed, do animal husbandry chores like shearing, deworming, and moving cattle and general landscaping to keep the farm looking tip-top! Michael is a great teacher and loves to work alongside positive, hardworking individuals who like to get “stuck in”, and really feel the satisfaction of a job well done! We would love to teach you what we’ve learned about farming and animals that brought us to where we are today.
This year we are also adding a butcher facility to our farm to service our community so we have that project going alongside our regular farming practices, which will be a great learning experience for those interested in building as the crew will be on site daily!
For safety and efficiency we do prefer to have volunteers who already have experience with the following things, but any volunteer will be considered if they have a "can-do" attitude and are willing to learn!
- Animal care
- Farm help
- heavy lifting
- Using tools
- fencing
- building/carpentry

Unterkunft
We have 2 volunteer cabins on the property, one with a full kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom and laundry facility. And a second cabin with an additional bedroom, living space, and kitchenette. Volunteers will be asked to share the full kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities with other volunteers but can keep their bedrooms and living spaces separate if they so choose. But cabins are right in the heart of the action with walkout access to the fields, tons of windows, and great aesthetics.
3 meals a day are provided for volunteers. Breakfast and lunch will be available to you in your cabins, for you to prepare at your leisure, so that you can start your day privately and have your lunch as soon as your tummy growls. And supper you are welcome to join us in the main farm house! Sometimes we bbq on the deck! Anything special or additional volunteers want, such as alcohol and candy, you are welcome to purchase for yourself from our local store.

Our community is brimming with things to do. We are so lucky to be surrounded by some of the best fishing lakes in the world, as well as miles and miles of hiking trails. It is very beneficial to come to this area with a car due to the distance between things, including our nearest town, but Fawn Lake is walking distance for fishing, swimming and relaxing.
