Beschreibung
Hi we're Penelope, Michael and Bentley, we're British and live in the lovely green north of Spain in Asturias.We have 6 rescued cats and I am currently fostering 6 cats and caring for 7 village cats. I also have 4 rescued dogs. I am looking for somebody to help care for the animals and to help with work around the house and garden (including cooking if of interest).

Our house is walking distance to Villaviciosa (600m) and 9km from a lovely beach called Rodiles. There are good bus links from Villaviciosa to Ribadesella, Llanes, Gijon and Oviedo among others. Asturias is known for mountain trails and surfing. It really is a paradise here.

The people who have enjoyed being here in the past are people who adore animals, they love being surrounded by cats and dogs and receiving all the love and affection that they like to give people. Our house is in the process of being done up so it's a little scruffy and with all of our animals it's hard for there not be some mud and pet hairs in the house so that needs not to be a problem for you. We're often busy working or organising animal rescue so this opportunity suits people who are happy to hang out with animals mostly. We're here and love to chat when we get the chance but sometimes we don't get much time.

Asturias is green and in places the mountains are only 15km from the beach, it's pretty stunning. We love meeting new people and have had lots of fun with Workawayers in the past but please note we don't have lots of time free to chat as things stand currently. Sometimes people have been interested in the way Iwe live - we try to eat healthily, feed our pets healthily and our son was home-educated until he chose to go to school this year. I always have lots of philosophical discussions with visitors if they're up for that!

Please note that one person left because she was expecting formal English language tuition. It's hard for me to find time to do this but I'm very very happy to speak to visitors in English whenever they like.

The city of Gijon is 30 minutes away by bus with museums, shops and a beach, Ribadesella is 40 minutes away, a gorgeous seaside resort, Villaviciosa, our closest town has cafes, nice shops and some nice walks. Rodiles is a beautiful beach 9km away. Oviedo, capital of Asturias, is a 30 minute bus ride away and is a pretty cultural city with museums, opera. Food in Asturias is known as being some of the best in the country. Not far away are the Picos de Europa mountains and there are other beautiful walks nearby.

Sadly we ended up having a very bad experience with Isabel. She's a nice lady and did some lovely things like help two of our dogs who had wounds and she introduced us to a product which really helps to heal animals and people. Unfortunately however it turned out that although Isabel likes animals and was happy to spend time with them and help them her goal in coming to do Workaway with us was to help us in exchange for learning English. She'd said from the start that she wanted to improve her English and we were all very happy to speak to her in English while going about daily tasks and doing activities with her. But when she arrived she really struggled to understand us and ultimately preferred to speak to us in Spanish. I offered to sit down with her and help her with pronunciation and understanding of spoken English. I spent several hours doing this over the 10 days she was here and in car journeys and on dog walks we practised English pronunciation and learnt vocabulary.

Isabel knew that my son and I were due to go away in the second half of June which was one of the main reasons we needed a Workawayer to come. My partner works long hours and has a heavy workload when he gets home and can't look after the animals on his own. The trip we were due to do required a lot of planning and the English tuition that Isabel required, contributed to me being very behind on the planning. 4 days before the trip she asked if I could give her an English tuition session and I explained that I wouldn't have time since I needed to plan the trip.

She said that the deal was that I would teach her English for 14 days in exchange for her looking after our animals for 14 days (this had never been my understanding). She said that she wasn't interested in being in Asturias, nor in free accommodation or food, only in learning English. I explained that that wasn't how Workaway worked, that normally people help out in exchange for accommodation and food and an exchange of life experiences and so on. I explained that most people who come to us do so because of their love of animals and desire to spend time in Asturias. I explained that if I'd known from the start that she expected me to give her private English tuition on a regular basis I would never have been able to agree to it since I just don't have time. I'd anticipated speaking lots of English to her while we went about daily activities and that for many people would have been a very helpful way of improving their spoken English.

In the end she left after 10 days and 4 days before our trip. As a result we don't have anyone to help care for the animals and have had to cancel our trip.

Today on day 10 she'd finally got the hang of caring for the animals and I would have been able to let her do tasks on her own. Until now I've been explaining how to do everything which has been time consuming which is fine and I understand that for some people it takes longer than others, but it means, in effect, that we've had very little help.

In summary this experience wasn't a good one for us. I think our profile clearly shows that we are not an English language teaching service and I think Isabel has really misunderstood the spirit of Workaway. To leave us just when she was able to start helping and knowing that it was going to lead to us cancelling our trip was very upsetting.
