Weykt (greetings), we are a small family that lives out in the forest, under a waterfall, surrounded by a river and two lakes (look up Skwlax/ Squilax) on reserve. We are a 10 minute walk through a mature forest to a (mostly) private beach, where eagles live and berries grow. We take immediate care of 2.5 acres, including our ceremonial grounds and garden. We can direct you to amazing hikes, and fun outdoor activities, from bike trails to salmon spawning grounds and even bring you with us into traditional ceremony, if it is the right time and fit.

We do have help scheduled for the whole summer but we have multiple sleeping accommodations so if the dates line up and one is available it could work. :)

Honey has worked most of her career as an Indigenous Education teacher, Spi7uwe is a retired bass musician and while very knowledgeable about how projects should be done, he struggles with mobility, so we need helpers. He is a secwepemct'sin language speaker and we both have at least intermediate level Spanish. I (Honey) am working on developing teaching tools, workshops and podcasts for a small not profit aimed to connect people with language and culture. We are very busy but will be home more over the summer. We will have time to spend with you, especially if we are working on a building project, but would prefer if our workawayers come as couples or people that are really good at spending time by themselves, especially during the school year.

We are finishing up our home space, we have been building it and our garden spaces ourselves for years and are ready to welcome help and share what we have already done and what we have learned along the way..

We have projects along the lines of...
Building decks, stuccoing, permaculture garden and yard work, cleaning chores, building sauna, raking, wood splitting etc.

See the work subheading for more details.

We have a twenty year old daughter that is fledging.. and not home all that often, when she is she tends to retreat to her own space. We all sing (but not all the time). If you come to stay with us, sometimes there are lots of friends (we host traditional ceremony and have a large family) here, but mostly you must be able to enjoy your time to yourself in our forest.

What we have to trade is a clean comfortable room, healthy food, and peaceful, beautiful surroundings and potentially music lessons. We are medicine keepers and this space is magic.

We are most keen for positive, clean people with trades skills and an appreciation of the land. Grant writers, webpage/ social media gurus, body workers and accountants also very welcome!!!

Because of the space we hold, we don't drink and don't allow alcohol on our land and ask that you not partake while staying with us, though most other medicines are fine if used appropriately.

We do have high speed internet but it is limited monthly so please no big downloading etc. We are happy people, book lovers, who have been building our home ourselves for the last decade (it's almost done!!!). I work pretty long hours and really appreciate the help in the home and we have a very long list of projects with some flexibility to suit your skill sets and interest, maybe one will feel like the right fit for you.

Due to our home also being home to 4 cats and a very old dog, we do not invite anyone's pets to our home for their comfort and safety.

Thanks for reading and considering us for your workaway!

We both carry teachings, stories, songs and ceremony. We are Indigenous people who know our histories, understand freedom. We live on and care for Spi7uwe's hereditary family lands inside of unceded secwepemcul'uuc. Honey grew up on the border in the southwestern United States and is culturally adapted there as well as in mainstream Canada and an Indiginational. We also help people with personal medicine ceremonies of many kinds and are very aware of the medicines of this forest. :)

That said, we are inviting somebody here because we are pretty busy, while we will certainly spend time with you, you must expect to be on your own with most of your time here. Though currently if you book with us you will likely be meeting other workawayers as we have guests booked through October. We live at the mouth of the largest sockeye salmon run in the world, in a beautiful forest. The nature has it's own culture if you listen. We both do feather-work, I bead and sew. We also hunt and participate in cultural activities.

We expect someone would learn about traditional food here as well as something of our culture and ways of being. Of course there is learning that happens with all projects and we do our best to communicate in a love centered way.

We are both teachers, Honey has been a classroom teacher and Indigenous Education specialty teacher from K-University as well as a principal and curriculum consultant. Honey also runs womens healing retreats. Spi7uwe is a language teacher, working on a Master of Language (Secwepemcstsin) and a retired professional bass musician (backed up the likes of Henry Small, Buffy Saint Marie etc.). We have a full drum kit here too.

Honey and Spi7uwe both have advanced Reiki and other energy modalities, Honey is a performance level fire spinner. Ana is a nail tech and working towards full esthetic credentials. Honey and Ana both like board/ card games. Long live Catan!

We prefer help for 2 weeks then see how it is going... Probably a month is even a good stay.

Preference is given to trades people when we are scheduling so please highlight your building skills.

We have been building this home, garden and ceremonial space for over a decade now, piece by piece with lots of upcycled materials. This spring and summer our goal is to get our hot tub and surrounding space (potentially sauna) functional, and rebuilding our porch with a deck top. We would love to have help with stuccoing our home this year too. We also have large organic garden spaces that enjoy attention.

We are always keen for people who like to split wood or have trades skills such as electrical, fine carpentry, natural building, framing and permaculture garden experience. Basically we are appreciative of trades people we won't have to teach, especially if you are creative and independent. We live on reserve so don't need permits to build and can therefore get things done efficiently and can change plans so your ideas and input are valued. We are looking for capable people who like to build, clean, garden and /or organize and are reasonably self sufficient.

We will all talk about what your skills and interests are, and our needs and make the right fits. What we have done with long term workawayers was to just make a list of all the things we would like to see done and let them get at it and prioritize according to their skills and interests, keeping in mind weather and availability of materials. We expect people who come here to be pretty capable and able to self direct, as well as take care of the spaces they utilize. (for instance, not needing to be taught how to paint window sills... Youtube is available but we will also guide... And clean up afterwards, taking good care of our tools and home. Spi7uwe is home most of the time (his courses are online) and can consult. For bigger projects we will all work together.

Grant writers and business help is welcome, as are audio/video editors and computer techs.- but for this spring and summer, we are focusing on our home. We hope to get the hot tub (including insulative mural) and surrounding space up and running and build our deck in May and June, as well as all the spring gardening chores. :)

As summer comes we will still have gardening tasks and around we will be working on the deck and stuccoing as well as gathering medicines and berries and swimming at the beach and following ceremony trail. We can accommodate 2 couples and a single traveller for July-August.

We also have some fine carpentry projects (large window seat, building drawers, some built in shelves, a wooden or stone mural around the hot-tub). Even fixing up and stuccoing + muralling the outhouse. There are a few indoor paint projects as well.

We are open to other kinds of trades, though skills and keenness for the summer projects will take priority for the next months. Some computer rebuilding and organizing, for a shorter stay including wepdesign and scheduling.

Chopping wood is almost always an option as we try to have on hand enough for our home wood stove, our ceremony wood (5 foot split hardwoods) and our sweat lodge.

Body workers (rmt, osteo, etc) also welcome.

A typical schedule is self serve food, though if it a time when Honey is home (Summer) she will likely do most of the cooking but usually still self serve when you are up and keen.. Fancy porridge or egg / potato tacos many mornings. Soups about half the nights (they are very hearty and tasty), rice and curry or elk steaks and burgers or rice and stir fry many other nights.. Great salads especially in the summer.

One day person one may be working in the garden and person 2 working with spi7uwe at times that are good for everyone. (Let's say morning) then you go walking in our forest or art in the yard or jam out in the afternoon. Dinner and repeat. Next day maybe person 2 is working with honey jarring berries or just cleaning up around the yard. Left overs for dinner.

Maybe day 3 we are ready to build forms for the concrete for the deck. We all do that together and the deck build begins. Likely in the mid mornings again, afternoon free time. Or maybe we do 6-7 hr days and have a 3 day weekend. Maybe you feel like cooking and we taste your creations.

Maybe the weekend there is ceremony or pow wow and we all go, or we all go to sweatlodge. Or you have our place to yourselves for the weekend and putter. 5 days of work don't have to be in a row and if we take you somewhere on a weekday you can make those hours up maybe on the weekend.. 25 hrs a week plus keeping up after yourself and common space. Maybe doing 3 long days feels better for you... We are flexible and easy to talk to as long as our trades are fair and we keep in good communication about tasks.

We hope you will be able to do many days with little direction and can self direct efficiently. Unless it is a really big project like building the deck. Maybe we just check in about it.. Like the insulating and designing mural for hot hut and you just do it at your own pace and we let you at it. Depends when you get here and what projects are prioritized and what your skills and interests are.

Maybe you are good with Ubuntu OS and would like to organize our old computers... that would be an awesome exchange for us. There are lots of projects and we can find the right fit. Maybe you are just interested in cleaning and gardening and don't want to hang with us too much, totally fine.

Basically, there is an abundance of things to get done around here, you likely will have your pick of projects.

We are interested in trading for work in our space, but of course that can include our English or Secwepemcstin fluency Informally or formally for increased work hours - same with other sessions. Honey has taught English in schools and privately and explains grammar and usage very well. We both have intermediate level Spanish and would be happy to have Spanish language speakers here as well.

  • Unterkunft

    Unterkunft

There is a small room with a queen bed, workspace and small dresser in the home (cold weather guests as grandma uses it most of the summer). There is also a small cabin with a space heater and a queen mattress (currently on the floor but it is a nice space with lots of books). Or, there is a small cabin with a twin bed (huge fantasy book library there), but also out tipi storage) and a wood stove that is steps from the outhouse at our ceremony grounds. There is also a rustic camper with 2 beds. They are all comfortable spaces. Lots of room for camping too.

The preference is that during the spring and summer you would use the outhouse (we often do too as it is a pain to take of shoes just to go to the washroom). If you are here in the winter (staying in the house) we still ask that if you stand to pee please water a tree... Or just sit down.

Please take your shoes off (socks on) before entering out home. Laundry is onsite. We stay upstairs and my daughter is in the other ground-level bedroom.

The indoor room (cold weather guests) is not under our bed and has a window. A single man would always be put in one of the cabins, for our daughter's comfort and in the summer months the queen cabin would be the first place for couples as well (privacy and quiet).

We always keep a lot of food in our home but do expect our guest to also eat left overs (we do). I often cook a big soup and it lasts a few days, then something like a curry or pasta dish (we do rice noodles too) and same applies. We are a 2 meals a day sort of family and keep fruit to snack on around (apples, bananas, cherries from our trees). Breakfast is often gourmet oats or egg/potato tacos, sometimes healthy berry pancakes.

We don't use much dairy, and never onions. We eat wild meat (mostly deer or elk), but often eat vegetarian (food, not people) and welcome people who don't eat meat as well as those that do. We do use eggs heavily so if you require vegan meals we ask that you bring your own supplements... We always have oats, rice and beans (and quite a lot of berries) but you will be a bit more on your own for food though we have lots of greens in the summer.

On that note, we are a 2 meal a day sort of family really, often eating in our own spaces or outside, especially as we have just taken our porch down and there is currently a mud pit at the entrance. We hunt because it is our traditional way and are sacred with the process. We will communicate about food, if you have questions (about anything) please ask!

We can share food storage skills such as butchering, pickling, hot water bathing, canning, smoking and dehydrating... naturally as we do it but if you have an interest we can prioritize those things during your stay. Food is included in the exchange, however, we don't buy meats very often, and never beef, rarely dairy or onions (but we love garlic). We usually have an abundance of wild meat to choose from as well as a hefty garden and it's gifts. We like to barbeque in the summer.

We don't count cooking food you also eat or washing up after yourself towards our exchange. Sometimes we will cook and make enough for everyone, sometimes you will and sometimes we all fend for ourselves and eat leftovers. :)

We are a 2 minute walk to the river, a 10 minute walk through a natural mature food forest to a private lake beach that is very swimmable in the summer, and good kayaking or paddle boarding if you have those toys. We are 10-15 minutes to 3 quaint towns and 40-50 minutes from Salmon Arm and Kamloops respectively for more metropolitan activities. We generally head in at least once a week. We also know where the good hikes are, we do a fair bit of foraging in the summer (medicine and berries), which you would be welcome to come along and help with.

There is an ebus from Vancouver or Kelowna to Chase, we can pick you up from there, or potentially Kamloops, depending on the day. However, there is not public transit here, we can help with some rides, but not daily, unless it is when we are in Kamloops for the whole day (work exchange packed into weekends is okay). Local activities include anything lake related, hiking, arts, books. If you have your own vehicle you might like it here better. We are close to world class ski hills and back country access and great spots for kayaking, canoeing or paddle boarding. You may use our pedal bikes. The hikes here are top notch and beach is just down the trail, and private.

Also, please bring your own personal hygiene supplies. Brushes, shampoo, deodorant, toothpastes etc are not included in the exchange and please no perfume/ cologne in the home. Good vibes always welcome.
